iPhone 4.0 OS: Now with iAds (TUAW.com)

Apr 8th 2010 7:19PM Please don't think that all ads are evil. Movie trailers are ads, and people love them.

Here's where a good vetting process will improve the experience for everyone.

Speed Download 5.2.15, and a deal to get it $10 off (TUAW.com)

Apr 6th 2010 10:16PM As someone who has bought Speed Download *multiple times*, I must say there's definitely an element of evil here. Speed Download is for one computer only, meaning if it detects another copy of Speed Download running on your network with the same serial number (!) it tells you then closes the application.

This has caused me to buy the app three times, but it still bites me in the ass when I go to install the software and don't realise which one is which. Personally, I think it's a bit slack to demand such specific one-serial-number-to-one-machine anti-piracy measures. It's like Microsoft Office, but from an indy Mac dev that should know better.

Data Robotics announces new Drobo FS (TUAW.com)

Apr 6th 2010 10:06PM I completely agree with Steven here, this is a legitimate post that interests a large number of the TUAW audience. No doubt, this is the target market for Drobo's products (creatives who need to back up their files, but don't need an engineering degree to do so).

Use DynDNS for better success with Back To My Mac (TUAW.com)

Mar 12th 2010 10:48PM You'll have a much better chance of getting Back to my Mac working if you put your modem onto Bridge Mode, and have the AirPort Extreme handle PPPoE and port forwarding. This way, you can take advantage of NAT-PMP, which in my experience works fantastically.

The modem's UPnP has never functioned properly in my experience, but by bypassing the modem's control entirely and having the AirPort Extreme manage port forwarding, everything works swimmingly. I have Back to my Mac working in three locations, and this setup never fails me.

Sega giving away Columns on iPhone for free all this weekend (TUAW.com)

Jul 3rd 2009 9:45PM I can see why they made it free. This game is absolutely abysmal — playing 'endless' on easy lasted all of 20 seconds until the game defeated me, and I promptly removed the game from my iPhone. Really, genuinely poor form.

Mac 101: Getting the most out of Dictionary.app (TUAW.com)

Jun 26th 2009 8:12AM The suffix .app is used in Mail.app and Dictionary.app because the names ‘Mail’ and ‘Dictionary’ do not properly determine exactly what is being referred. If this article explained how to make the most of the dictionary, you would not be faulted for believing the article would be full of tips about word tips and index information that translates to any dictionary, rather than the Dictionary application on your Mac.

The same, if not to a larger extent, applies to Mail.app. Saying ‘10 tips for Mail’ could be tips for managing your email, advice for signatures, and good practices for other email etiquette. Simply sufficing ‘.app’ eliminates this potential confusion.

Yazsoft updates ShareTool, launches Monster Holiday Giveaway (TUAW.com)

Dec 2nd 2008 5:41PM This list of new features is wrong, that's the Sharetool features from versions previous. The new one is more about streamlining connections, a tighter knowledge of ways to reconnect, the ability to be automatically emailed with the new port settings, and a speedier connection thanks to the default compression being higher.

Mysterious new 4GB iPod nano 4Gs begin appearing on store shelves (Engadget)

Sep 17th 2008 10:19AM The serial number checks out: it's under warranty until October 2009. http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi shows that the iPod was made in Shenzhen, China, week 35, 2008, which is this week.

Someone I know saw one of these at a mass retailer in Australia today.

Hands On: Big Bang Board Games for iPhone (TUAW.com)

Sep 17th 2008 9:06AM I hear they're making iPod touch with speakers built in now.
