Taking Stock of Best Managers in Majors (Fanhouse MLB Blog)

Aug 23rd 2010 10:47PM Steve, you need to go back to banging skanks if you think La Russa should even be ON the list. He's horrific at managing pitchers because he kills the game in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings, often switching pitchers after each at-bat. And he still manages to lose to the Cubs most of the time. Jeez.

Windows Explorer replacements abound (Download Squad)

May 11th 2007 5:05PM XYplorer comes with a Lifetime license, is portable, has customizable keyboard shortcuts, and handles graphics and video with speed and ease. And it's only a 1M download compared to Directory Opus's 13+M.

WIRED journo won't do email interviews--ironic. (The Jason Calacanis Weblog)

Apr 24th 2007 11:59PM Jason, you're absolutely right on this issue. I do the same thing with debt collectors rather than have taped phone conversations. Like the Bush Administration, they tend to lose transcripts, tapes, emails, hell, entire laptops. But if it's sent to me, it's on my server which is mirrored in two other locations. So self-protection works for both of us, not just one-way.

When you think about it, it's actually suspicious that an interviewer would not agree to email as the medium!

Office 2007 voted most innovative product of 2006 (Download Squad)

Jan 8th 2007 12:53AM I never grew to like Office 2007 despite beta testing it throughout 2006. I hate the ribbon. It's 47 pixels fatter than the old toolbar (http://www.thegsblog.com/?p=113). Microsoft all but killed keyboard shortcuts, as an extra step has been added to almost every keyboard shortcut. In the UI redesign, the alternative to have the Ribbon as a sidebar would have been better given new letterbox 16:9 aspect monitors. Citations are unfinished business in Word 2007, so STUDENTS BE WARNED: several of the formats are incorrect or nonexistent for multiple sources; and while sources are saved as XML, Word 2007's documentation styles are XSLTs, making it incredibly difficult for anyone to create their own, e.g., a university department or in-house publishing division.

Nov 25th 2006 12:16AM One of the neatest little sites I've seen in a while, and very useful for paring down big fat photos to share with someone through email on the fly. Veign Software has several other cool apps, too. Check out Pixeur when you get a chance.

Corel is teaming up with Mozilla (Download Squad)

Nov 10th 2006 5:22PM Kenny and Chris are both right. WordPerfect has long been dead, and OpenOffice is a far better and more flexible alternative. Corel is trying one last desperate gasp to save itself.

Windows Vista pricing leaked, and it's not pretty (Download Squad)

Aug 30th 2006 5:59PM The last thing I'd ever do is switch to the Mac religion. (Firefox people have bought into the idea that tech is a matter of faith now.) Everyone I know who has an apple likes to "play" on the computer (except there's no games for macs) and they love to show it to everyone like it's a piece of furniture, but I — like millions around the planet — actually use our systems to make a living and be productive. And despite their silly commercials, there's little productive coming from the Mac side of the fence.

There's a reason the business world won't touch macs. No, lots of reasons why.

yWriter - helps you write your novel (Download Squad)

May 23rd 2006 10:52PM A great tip, indeed. A few years back I used novel software (can't recall the title), and it was so cumbersome it hindered rather than aided actual writing. Thanks for sharing!
