Final Internet Explorer 9 preview released -- tons of fixes, speed-ups, and only 8 weeks until the beta (Download Squad)

Sep 1st 2010 12:07AM In tech support, you'd be surprised how many people I talked to that were still using IE6 because updates take too long to download (on dial-up, but it can be annoying on DSL). I've even talked to a few people on IE4 and 5.

Apr 25th 2010 12:55PM I came in here to say just this. If I had my way, every time someone cites an average, they would give all the stats—median, st. dev., etc.

Apple boycotts Fox News because of Glenn Beck (TUAW.com)

Mar 29th 2010 4:36PM The applicable part of the first amendment: "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech ..."

This means that a government can't pass a law restricting Glenn Beck's speech (actually they could, and then it could be struck down in court). This does not mean that businesses can't make decisions on what speech to support with their advertising money. It's fairly rare that a high-profile personality drives away so many advertisers as Beck does, so he must be doing something distasteful to so many.

Mar 22nd 2010 1:38PM You may have another program installed that wants to open Mail or use Mail when it starts up. Check out what other programs start up when you log in that may be the culprit. (System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items)

Mar 22nd 2010 1:30PM I don't think there's a way to do exactly what you're talking about, but there is a workaround. When I listen to music, I often make a temporary playlist. I start by dragging the first song I want to listen to there, then start it from that playlist. Then drag the next songs you want into the playlist. When the next song starts, it won't jump back to that playlist. You'll notice that the play/pause button becomes a stop button when you do this. I also like this method because I can find songs more than one in advance.

What do you want to see in Mac OS X 10.7? (TUAW.com)

Mar 21st 2010 10:02PM I use AppFresh for updating the rest of my apps. It's free (which MacUpdate is not) and can check apps anywhere, as well as preference panes and widgets. There's an option to take over the responsibility of updating Apple software too. I have it run once daily, and when I tell it to update the programs for which it found newer versions, it's able to download and install most with no action required by me. Sparkle is good, but I like to get updates as they come out, not just when I open the program.

Giving or getting a Mac for the holidays? 10 apps every new Mac user needs (TUAW.com)

Nov 22nd 2009 11:53AM As much as I dislike the underhanded techniques like this to get software installed (I'm looking at you Apple with Safari on Windows, but MS also guilty), I actually like Silverlight. MS seems to have done a good job with it. On a Mac especially, it's a good add-on, as opposed to Adobe AIR which is terrible. If I could, I would banish all Adobe software from my computers ever. We just need to get the html tag up and running.

Dec 16th 2008 11:01AM Wow, I'm surprised that worked because the menu doesn't change when you hold down option like other things do. Thanks!
