Pillsbury Contest Controversy (Slashfood)

Apr 29th 2010 4:25PM "A small child could create this terrible thing"

Yup, and yet they didn't. Sue Compton did. So the recipe doesn't require hours of preparation? In this hectic day and age, I'm always happy to have simple, easy things I can prepare for my family. From what the judges have to say, it tastes good. At the end of the day, that's really all that's important in a recipe. Frankly, I love it and am looking forward to trying it. I just KNOW my two-year old daughter will flip out over it!

Congratulations Ms. Compton! You deserve it, and anyone who disagrees can suck it. And, since you're from Jersey, I know you won't have any trouble telling people to do just that! :)

Santa Clara Bans Happy Meal Toys (Slashfood)

Apr 28th 2010 4:14PM Okay, so the question is: how do we hold the parents responsible? Take their kids away if they're obese? Charge them with child endangerment? Force them to take government-run classes in how to feed their kids?

While I don't disagree that because two people have figured out the formula "sperm + egg = child" doesn't mean in any way they should be allowed to actually HAVE kids, blaming or punishing the parents would cause just as much backlash.

An Ice Primer - LeNell It All (Slashfood)

Apr 23rd 2010 6:32PM 1 in 7 people on this planet don't have access to consistently clean and drinkable water, but in the US & Japan, it's so plentiful that the effete elite can stick their noses up in the air if they don't get it frozen in exactly the right shape with just the right level of air bubbles in it. Sigh...I guess here's my problem: how is it that people who are stupid enough to pay a premium on such a thing capable of having enough money that they can afford it?

Arkansas Reins In Free Chip-and-Salsa Service (Slashfood)

Apr 22nd 2010 5:43PM I dunno, I've been a couple of Mexican restaurants in my area that charge for chips. It's a recent thing, I hadn't seen it prior to a couple of months ago and found it quite surprising. I can see that it does cost the restaurant to make and serve them, but it would make more sense to me to "bury" that cost in the main meal prices. Very few people, except the regulars that come in daily and order the exact same thing, are going to notice you jacked prices up 50-75 cents, but every person will notice when you start charging for chips.

Blue Crabs Are Back in Chesapeake Bay (Slashfood)

Apr 21st 2010 2:34PM Only the gods can make crabs, but only humans can control themselves from eating them to extinction.

Burger King Testing "Brunch" (Slashfood)

Apr 20th 2010 8:23PM I just tried the breakfast muffin sandwich yesterday. I think they missed something in the recipe they stole...the eggs aren't square patties of egg-like product at McDonald's. They're actual eggs grilled on a grill. That being said, if taken on its own and not compared to the Sausage McMuffin with Egg sandwich, it's not that bad. And, for a buck, even better.

I REALLY liked the funnel cake sticks they offer, though. THOSE were awesome!

I pretty much stopped going to BK about 10-15 years ago when they changed their fries dramatically. They're terrible and I just can't stomach them. And, what's a burger without fries? But, the new breakfast menu is gearing up to be something good. I might even just go back!

Banning Bad Tippers - What Can I Get You Folks? (Slashfood)

Mar 4th 2010 1:25PM In order to put your plan in effect, the restaurant would need to start paying their waitstaff a salary commensurate with what they were in earning in tips. That would be significantly higher than the 20% tip (sorry, 15% was so 20 years ago) since they'd also have to start taking taxes out, social security, etc. Expect the food at your favorite eatery to double or triple in that instance...now see if your idea still has merit.

The fact is, you might not like tipping, and that's a shame for you. It's a reality that it fits the economics of the food service industry. Without it, restaurants would no longer exist. So, if you can figure out how to increase their costs by 500% but not increase their prices, I'm sure every restaurant owner would love to hear your plan. Until then, tip your waitstaff or don't come back. I applaud Kanpai Japanese Steak and Seafood House in Winston-Salem, and if I lived close would frequent them more now.

Every business is starting to realize that the flawed mantra of "the customer is always right" is leading them to a path of ruin. It's time for every business to start firing bad customers, and those that do deserve our support!

Bad Fast Food Service? What Happens When You Complain? (Slashfood)

Feb 1st 2010 8:12PM @chris: I think you just skimmed the article. It says the people arrived at 8:30 and were told to get out at 8:40. No one was waiting. The employees might've been finished early, that's great. Send 'em home and you close up. You're the manager, try to be a leader. If you can't handle any follow up order that might come from these folks, or worse: clean up the table after them, you shouldn't be a manager anyway.
