Flipping the Linux switch: The GNOME desktop environment (Download Squad)

Dec 25th 2007 12:39PM I was always under the impression that the two targetted slightly different users. Gnome, with it's strong UI guidelines seemed aimed at switchers and more casual users, whereas KDE, seemed to offer a more configurable interface which can do a lot of things, but with some sacrifice in the initial usability.

Hands-on with the Apple iTV prototype (Engadget)

Sep 12th 2006 3:18PM Any idea if it's got a hard drive? I'm wondering if it syncs with your PC or if you have to leave it on all the time.

I also wonder if they'll have rentals on the iTunes store. For me that makes much more sense that buying stuff digitally. The appeal of being able to rent a massive online catalogue of movies would be amazing.

Tangled up in Bluetooth (Engadget)

Sep 9th 2006 2:08PM Actually, Zoundguy you're missing the point. Sounds like you're a gadget guy who doesn't realise that you are not the mass market. You may all want those things but not many other people do. An iPod will never be the thing for you.

If you're looking for loads of extra features then you'll need to buy from someone else. iPods are music players and that's what they do best and that's why they are successful.

Hamson - you can get wireless bluetooth headphones for ipods and other devices. There were some profile on here recently.

Tangled up in Bluetooth (Engadget)

Sep 9th 2006 10:10AM Maybe as an accessory but I don't have a machine with bluetooth and I probably won't in the future. It would be silly to pay for it if I wouldn't use it.

Bluetooth is far from ubiquitous to warrant it being built-in to the iPod. Also wouldn't it be fairly slow for synching too in comparison to USB2?

Microsoft warns Europe of possible Vista delays (Engadget)

Sep 8th 2006 11:21AM Intrepid> Read up on Anti-trust laws.

I understand your confusion, I think if you figure out the motivation of these types of laws things will make more sense to you:

Microsoft warns Europe of possible Vista delays (Engadget)

Sep 8th 2006 9:15AM Intrepid - it's not about the US at all.

It's all about encouraging competition in the marketplace so targeting someone who achieved an illegal monopoly through certain practices. OSX hasn't an illegal monopoly so there's no reason to go against them.

MacMice busts out laser-powered Danger Mouse (Engadget)

Aug 21st 2006 11:31AM Doesn't Apples Mighty Mouse have a right-click button already, it's just not visible.

Sounds like they've reinvented the wheel, and badly.

Samsung's ultraportable Q40 is pretty in pink (Engadget)

Aug 14th 2006 7:05AM Why are you surprised that people would pay money for a gadget that's "fashionable" and looks good?

That's exactly what we do with everything else.

There was a time when shoes and clothes were purely funcitonal too, but now as technology becomes more unbiquitous and adopted by mainstream consumers more and more then fashion-technology will become commonplace.

New Segway coming tomorrow? (Engadget)

Aug 13th 2006 4:28PM Segways are great fun. Had the chance to play around on one for awhile recently. Really great.

Don't think I'll be splashing out on one just yet, but they're certainly a lot of fun.

O Canada! Sony gives DivX to the True North (Engadget)

Jun 12th 2006 12:51PM I think Tyler is on the right track. It's probably a legal issue rather than a case of "Sony hating Canada"
