New Hotmail, Microsoft Office 2010 available now (Engadget)
Jun 18th 2010 12:52PM @Very Powerfull Codfish
We have switched 9 users in our office to openoffice since the new release at the start of this year. Yes, it is a little strange in places and there are features such as complex Macros that are difficult or impossible to create. BUT. We have not had any productivity issues and no-one is coming to me asking for MS Office to be given back to them. 90% of users simply do not need the complexity of MS Office and openoffice is all they need.
It was really MS Office 2007 that made us look for an alternative. The ribbon bar and other usage issues simply killed our passion for MS Office. Why create such an intrusive interface in the age of widescreen... When your screen is wide the menubar needs to be as narrow as possible.. I mean Duhh ??
The only version of MS Office worth having is MS Office 2003. It does 99.99% of everything you need. Microsoft has to keep making money so the later versions are all about dubious eyecandy and bloatware. I would challenge anyone to prove that to upgrade Office 2003 to 2007 or now 2010, has given them anything close to an increased value..
Have a look at Ebay. Office 2003 sells for more than Office 2007...
Enough said. I think..

Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1, how would you change it? (Engadget Mobile)
Jan 1st 2009 4:14PM 1. More tactile keyboard - the current one is terrible
2. Flush screen - and larger. Do not need more pixels - just larger area
3. Case that does not crack (mine has as seemingly most users)
4. Accelerometer to make the screen rotate
5. better external speaker - VERY IMPORTANT
6. One good interface instead of a collection is panels - all which miss the mark individually
7. Battery power gauge - anywhere... Use the LEDs
8. Ability to switch off data packages on GSM but keep available for WiFi
9. More responsive or better buffered touch screen - reduce need for multiple tapping to get a response
10. A SyncML program included to allow usage outside Microsoft world..
11. Speed Speed Speed - this is one sluggish cell phone
12. Ability to leave keyboard active while phoning... display is switched off making it hard to navigate voicemail etc.
13. Faster web site rendering
14. Useful navigation buttons or wheel where ones thumb naturally rests when using the phone - enabling one hand use
15. and so on..
Actually get rid of the whole phone.
As a Phone: Too short a battery life and terrible responsiveness on the touch screen. Poor external speaker.
As a Business Phone: To slow and complicated for normal user. Give us a Blackberry or Symbian every time. Business users do not want to have to keep tweaking their phone.
As a Geek Phone: Yeah ok, but Android will offer more functions and custom stuff for Geeks
Conclusion - this is a stop gap device which will not survive the test of time. In 2 years no-one will be too sentimental about having moved on. I personally believe that SE released this phone somewhat in desperation as they needed to show the world that they are "with it". In reality they have come out with a "Me Too" device and have missed the opportunity to move the goal posts. Apple must be laughing...No wonder SE just announced that they will not continue with HTC.

Oct 13th 2008 12:45PM Well, I have been running the final Betas and the RC1 for some time. OO has now finally become a serious contender to MS Office. To force myself to only use OO I simply did not reinstall MSOffice on my laptop when I have a crash about 6 weeks ago. I am now doing serious daily work with Writer, Calc and Impress and frankly I have not come across any reason to reinstall MSOffice. I am converted! Hallelujah!

How would you change Nokia's E71? (Engadget)
Aug 26th 2008 12:45PM Blackberry: Apparently Nokia is going to release very soon a competitive service to Blackberry and as such want to promote this.
GPS: Nokia want to make money on Nokia maps. Hence Tom Tom does not work.
So, this looks like the start of Nokia going the Ryanair way. If you want bells and whistles then you need to start thinking that you need to pay for them.
I had heard that Symbian was going to go Open Source in which case there will be patches for such issues I guess.

May 18th 2008 9:03PM Looks very cool.. but how much does it slow down your computer? When using cheaper slower lap-tops I am always afraid that all these things simply become irritating after a while as everything takes longer to achieve. Has anyone tried this? -Thomas
