CSI: Worst episode ever! (AOL TV)
Nov 25th 2006 5:23PM Whoa, who are you people kidding? Anna is dead-on. This episode was ludicrous. The over-the-top obviousness of the masks destroyed any sense of suspense and ruined any possibility of suspending disbelief in the already preposterous plot.
CSI is at it's best when it focuses on esoteric scientfic minutia and at it's absolute worst when it attempts "clever" plotting -- which never turns out to be clever.
What to avoid giving out for Halloween (Slashfood)
Oct 28th 2006 6:50AM WHAAAAAT? Dissin' Smarties? You're frickin' crazy, man.
As a child, when I returned home from trick-or-treating, the Smarties -- yes, the US kind -- were the first candies I would search through the bag for to eat.
Now, as an adult, I eat Smarties on a DAILY basis. Seriously. My company keeps a bowl of assorted candies at the reception desks (Smarties, the equally tempting Nerds, SweetTarts, sometimes some Sprees, occasionally some chocolate), and I regularly pick through the bowl to find the last of the Smarties that haven't already been gobbled up by my Smarties-loving co-workers.
You have done Smarties wrong. You owe Smarties an apology and their own, solo Slashfood entry to make up for your horrendous lack of credibility and accuracy re: the tastiest of Halloween candies.
Do you Utube? (Download Squad)
Oct 16th 2006 7:41AM Oh, c'mon, I expect more than this from Download Squad. This has to be your shoddiest post of all time. If you had read ANY of the articles about this you would have known that the problem isn't that people can't find utube.com, but that people can't find youtube.com!
Despite YouTube's popularity, remember that most people over 30 probably aren't too familiar with it. So they hear on NPR or from a co-worker that "Google bought YouTube" and, since they don't know how to spell "YouTube," they take the first reasonable shot: utube. (iPod, uTube -- makes sense, right?)
Utube.com's problem isn't that their customers don't know the site or can't find it, as you mistakenly assume. Utube.com's problem is that their site is being overwhelmed with useless traffic from NON-utube.com customers who are heading there by mistake because they don't know how to spell "YouTube." Utube.com's loyal customers can't even reach the site because the misspellers have sucked up all the bandwidth.
Makes me wonder how many other DS articles consist of the same kind of poor research as this one . . .
A correction is warranted, I think.
Ginormous Web 2.0 list (Download Squad)
Feb 13th 2006 7:39AM I've seen this list linked from Digg, Del.icio.us, and several blogs. The interesting thing that people seem to keep missing is that this is a *dynamic* list. (Check the Google cache for the page; it show's a very different list.)
The service, Listible, appears to be a collaborative list-making tool. So while some of the links in the list may be dubious Web 2.0 apps, the list appears to be correcting itself over time (like any good social software) as the users add and moderate up the good services and moderate down the crap services.
Montreal Steak Seasoning: Why am I so addicted? (Slashfood)
Oct 27th 2005 12:11PM This may be the weirdest use of all: I put Montreal teak seasoning on cottage cheese for breakfast! I started a low-carb diet, and, although I like cottage cheese, it's a little too bland for me. Liberally dose a bowl of cottage cheese with Montreal steak seasoning, though, and it becomes a creamy, spicy concoction that, accompanied by a glass of low-sodium V-8, makes a great low-carb breakfast.
Opera free, again, forever (Download Squad)
Sep 20th 2005 1:09PM Opera makes their money off embedded browser technology, in mobile phones and other electronics. The consumer browser market is secondary for them, but I suspect consumer market awareness of Opera is generally a good driver for the embedded business line. Prior to Firefox, they were the only quality IE alternative around, but I suspect that Firefox put the squeeze on their consumer browser market share. Eliminating the costs of the consumer browser makes sense; it allows them to compete with Firefox more easily and helps them keep a profile in the overall browser market.
