Mar 7th 2008 11:06PM Nice Post. This is dead on. We (skinnyCorp/Threadless) once made the mistake of buying "designer cubical" things. They are horrible, expensive and barely work. Now we just use wood desks made of tables (~100 dollars each).

We also find google apps a lifesaver. Having the email, calendar, word processor and spreadsheet all together is awesome. And the cost of the premium subscription is far cheaper than managing an exchange server. Plus - outlook blows. This also goes to Rojas was saying about collaboration. With everything online - it doesn't matter where your employees are - collaboration happens without them being physically near each other.

For the phone system - we use asterisk. It is super cheap (just a computer and some phones). But we don't deploy a phone to every employee - only to the ones who need it. So we save on that.

I feel that these tips are not just good for startups. We have been around for almost 8 years and we still rock these rules. If your employees are happy - work gets done with less resistance and therefore increases productivity.
