iFixit tears down the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2011 model (TUAW.com)

Feb 27th 2011 8:45PM I can think of 2 things that it serves , (1) encode the serial number in the hardware. Each machine has unique SN(that the OS can see) for AppleCare; (2) store lookup tables for EFI such as chip clockspeeds, timing specs etc. Is that why Apple machines are so hard to overclock ?!.
Putting in FPGA makes it extremely difficult to tamper with!.

Former Sun CEOs recount plan to buy Apple in 1995 (TUAW.com)

Feb 27th 2011 8:10PM Yeah Scott is a nice guy still. That was before Job's return with NextStep which becomes OSX that cured Apple's fortune.

If Sun were to buy Apple then, they would put Solaris as the core OS and slap that OS9 UI over it hoping to "cover" their bases. This would run that old Apple to the ground before even the Sparc chip sees the Apple enclosure!.

Meanwhile, Jobs would probably have bought Power Computing, gradually license NextStep to the consumer PC and have ipods and iwrist-watches and i3D-Glasses etc.

Sun would have died 3 years later, had it purchased Apple then ....

Ive due $30m stock windfall, may seek relocation back to UK (TUAW.com)

Feb 27th 2011 7:29PM "Move back to England has he lost his marbles".

Well, look at the US, you cannot fly without being molested legally. You cannot grow your own food at home. Soon (2012), you cannot choose the type of light bulbs you use at home. And most importantly, the dollar will crash soon, so Mr Ive would be wise to cash in his stock and get into Euro and put that in the Isle of Man.

HP tells employees webOS tablet coming Q1 2011 (Engadget)

Aug 11th 2010 1:57AM Timeline Q1 2011 ?. Sorry that is way too late!. By Xmas 2010, the Andriod tablets will be challenging iPad dominance with Froyo OS and various screen sizes and price points to suit buyers. This will eat a large slice of those who thinks of buying the iPad unless its that IPS screen they really wanted.
I think HP will not get into the consumer market in a big way and make a play for the Corporate/SME markets which are their strongholds. They will put in software distribution/management systems and security/policy solutions for business tablets. But that market will take time and HP can wait since it is their existing customer base.

So guys, do not hope for any consumer level things from HP in a long time, you will be disappointed!. Now Dell is a different beast and it has struck with the Streak but variants coming out of that could just hit the right spot for many. Go Dell!.

Former HP CEO Mark Hurd rewarded with a $40m severance after being forced to resign over fraudulent expense reports (Engadget)

Aug 9th 2010 4:18AM @sk1d : It is sad, isn't it. Capitalism exploited to the maximum and they do not care at whose expense it is done with as long as it is abused!.

There should be a cap at earnings for CEOs so that they can do the right balancing act towards their employees, customers and the public at large.Rather than maximizing profit at whatever expense (even skirting legal rules in some cases ...). The system is definitely very sick.

iMac (mid 2010) Core i3 review (Engadget)

Aug 4th 2010 3:30AM @oupoliscigrad : Thats just a guess!. Its common sense. Even a market survey should be taken with a pinch of salt. Nett result it would sell more if it had two USD3 ports in addition to the current four!.

It is for Apple to try because they can get feedback and look at sales figures in 3 or 6 months. They have the best sales database per model, per country of any vendor. But still, it might just be a cost issue since it will need some "retooling" in the production plants. Apple still wants their margins and seemed spoiled by that to date.

iMac (mid 2010) Core i3 review (Engadget)

Aug 4th 2010 3:24AM @JfnC : Good points. One of the biggest issues of the iMac design is for owners to discover how difficult it was to open and replace common components like DVDdrive, harddisk, RAM etc. Well, RAM is easy enough now but both DVDdrive and harddrive are just too technically challenged and requires special tools. Another thing is the device runs rather hot that means the inside components will not last for long especially in warmer climate countries.

So if Apple had provided USD3, or eSATA, would that persuade you to upgrade?.

Violent sun throws fit, massive blast of plasma to hit Earth tomorrow (Engadget)

Aug 4th 2010 2:56AM @d0mth0ma5 : There are reports that our magnetosphere is weak but I doubt if our measurements are accurate. We have not had any spaceship that can study CME impact on the magnetosphere and van allen rediation belts from an external view. ie looking at the impact from outside rather than measuring the resulting impacts from earth or from high in our atmosphere. This is where science tends to make "forecasts" and use that as fact for lack of other sources of data. It is unfortunate as many humans wanted some sort of conclusion without full understanding.

Also, there are guardians of earth who would help deflect this CME. We cannot see them but they are there and looking at our interests. Remember no ELE (extinction level event) is permitted to humankind except the ones humans inflict on themselves.

iMac (mid 2010) Core i3 review (Engadget)

Aug 3rd 2010 4:13AM Well, while it is mostly good in this major refresh, I still think leaving out USB3 ports is an unforgivable act for Apple. Just think about 20%-30% more people who would be likely to purchase this product if USB3 were to be included in the iMac range.

I do not accept the excuse that the Intel H55m did not support USB3. The NEC chip can be included to do such a job and adding $50 or $100 to the price would not hurt it one bit for USB3. Intel is technically a monopoly and can afford to milk a chipset for more money at the user's expense. Look AMD supports both SATA3 and USB3 already ....
