Pay wall fail : $650 million Newsday acquisition garners just 35 subscribers in three months (Download Squad)

Jan 27th 2010 8:15AM While I think that the Newsday strategy is dumb overall, they're not a good bellwether for other sites going behind the paywall because they're making all of their site free to a) Newsday print subscribers and b) Long Island Cablevision subscribers. This supposedly gets them to about 75% potential penetration of their market.

Again, I think that a full wall strategy is a bad idea, but given that their strategy is more about sacrificing the web site to prop up the paper, a more telling metric will be the next ABC print circulation audit which comes in March or April. If they stopped the bleeding, this may be a minor success on their terms.

A very short-sighted success, though.

iSlate specs "revealed." We also have a bridge to sell you. (TUAW.com)

Jan 4th 2010 8:20AM Also, "Clouded Leopard"?

Apple's too precise with the meanings of words to miss how that could be read negatively. If anything, it would be Snow Leopard Cloud.

Clouded Leopard sounds like "Sweded."

:-)

Jan 4th 2010 8:13AM Two USB ports? Hell, MB Air gets only one. And a HARD DRIVE? In 2010? Where's the scroll wheel??

Sheesh. They're not even trying to fake this well.

Oct 7th 2009 8:49AM No! It was Rhoda Morgenstern from The Mary Tyler Moore Show!

Sep 29th 2009 9:02AM I think it's great that they're charging. This tells me they'll have some decent cashflow and may actually stick around for a while.

Free apps are wonderful, until you think about how they will sustain for the long term (Remember I Want Sandy?). I'm reluctant to move any part of my workflow to a free app unless it's from an enormous, well-capitalized company (hello Google!). This is why I pay for Evernote and Pandora, even though I don't have to. I want them around for the long haul.

Win a copy of Bento from FileMaker and TUAW (TUAW.com)

Aug 19th 2008 8:39AM I'd fill it with Altoids. Because the only food container more convenient than an Altoids tin is a bento box.

Mad Men: The Benefactor - VIDEO (AOL TV)

Aug 11th 2008 9:19PM Another great episode.

Maybe I'm spoiled by the attention to detail, but I couldn't help notice two jarring anachronisms in the show:

First, the Utz bags. These are much later designs and the wrong material. Utz chips at the time came in stapled waxed-paper bags (printed on the outside, waxed on the inside).

Then the phone in Don's den. The clip-connector on the handset wire was at least 10-12 years ahead of itself.

Little things, but in a show this careful with the set-dressing, I wondered whether somebody in the props department took a sick day.
