wunderlist is a minimalistic, pretty to-do list manager. Here's a quick rundown of what it can and can't do:

Pros:

Looks: It looks quite pretty. You can change the background, and it's generally just lovely.

Simplicity: That can also be considered a bad thing, I guess, but wunderlist is very simple. There are no nested tasks, for example.

Multiple lists: You can easily create extra lists for different contexts and move items between lists.

Fast search: Search is "live" and updates as you type. It's very snappy, but I only tested it with a tiny list.

Quick filtering: There are quick links to see tasks due today, tomorrow, within the next seven days, etc. You can also filter by "starred" tasks.

Online sync: When you save the file, it's automatically synced to wunderlist's online server. Then you can run wunderlist on another computer and keep working on the same task list. I love this feature.

Cross-platform: It works with OS X and Windows at this point. The Windows version doesn't feel "native" at all, though - it feels like a Mac app running in a Windows window.

Cons:

Simplicity: There's no smart text processing. If I tell it "Buy food tomorrow," it doesn't realize "tomorrow" is a deadline. It's the same for "Talk to Josh @work" - it doesn't make a list with "@work" (or add to it if it exists).

No documentation: I know people never read it, but come on, technical writers have to earn a living somehow! Seriously though, I would expect at least an HTML page (other than the "Features" page, which is marketing).

No mobile app (yet): An iOS app is coming, but there's no talk of Android yet.

No global hotkey: And that's the deal-breaker for me; as I've said elsewhere, quickly capturing ideas and to-do items is crucial for me. There is currently no way to bring up wunderlist's window with a hotkey.

Bottom line: It's nice, if you like pretty software, and it shows a great deal of promise for the future (if the "cons" above are addressed).

wunderlist is a cross-platform free to-do list manager originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST.
TopWinPrio's function is mashed right into its name. Once you launch the app, it hides in your system tray and automatically bumps the process priority of your foreground window. If you're focused on an app and working in it, it might as well have dibs on available CPU time, right?

Head to the options window, and you can set TopWinPrio to run at startup, boost Explorer processes, and change the update interval. You can also switch the default process priority from AboveNormal to High or Realtime (danger, Will Robinson!) Your mileage will may vary, of course, though I've found TopWinPrio to provide a nice shot in the arm for my Atom 270 netbook.

On my desktop and full-size laptop, however, I don't see myself switching from Process Lasso. It's much more configurable and offers a slew of additional features.

TopWinPrio gives a priority boost to your focused application window originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 10:45:00 EST. Windows users, rejoice! You can now steal music from shared iTunes libraries -- or move music between two of your own computers, of course. Simply install Aethyr, connect to a library in iTunes, then switch to Aethyr and download some songs.

Library sharing in iTunes acts like a local-area network radio: you can stream music from computer to computer (from Mac to Windows!), but downloading is disabled. Aethyr removes that limitation, providing an easy way to move music between computers. According to Lifehacker, you haven't been able to do this since iTunes 7, so Aethyr fills a pretty large void.

It sounds like Aethyr has a few bugs, so you might want to check the FAQ if you experience any issues.
Flight Control, the challenging and addictive plane-landing game that's been hugely popular on the iPhone and iPad, is now coming to your desktop. Mac and PC users can play Flight Control via Valve's Steam gaming service for a mere $5. The desktop version loses the elegance of touchscreen controls, but it does include an exclusive desktop-only "stunt" map.

The Steam version of Flight Control has its own leaderboards, so it's doubtful that your Game Center rankings will transfer over. It will also have its own achievements to unlock, too, so that adds an incentive for folks who've already played Flight Control on their iDevices to try out the desktop version.
A new Windows BitTorrent client called zButterfly has a twist that sets it apart from the competition: a menu of current movie releases, including the hottest flicks that are still running in theaters. zButterfly has an easy-to-use interface for searching and browsing the releases, and operates entirely on torrentless downloading via magnet links. Even the most clueless downloader can use zButterfly to get access to recent Hollywood fare.

This is certainly going to draw angry reactions (and probably lawsuits) from the movie industry, but ZButterfly's creators think they have a solid defense. It's the old, "We're just a search engine. We don't actually host any files" defense. That'll be interesting, especially when there aren't even .torrent files hosted by zButterfly.
From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog. Recording to open formats, Rainbow now supports both audio and video recording on Windows, and audio recording on Linux, meaning it's not just Mac users that can get in on the action. The update also brings with it numerous bug fixes and the ability to specify custom recording resolutions, bit rate, encoding quality and channels through JavaScript. Mozilla has also added preliminary support for writing multiplexed media frames to a websocket. [Wesley, stop speaking gobbledegook! -Ed]

If you want to record video or audio direct from your browser, Rainbow, although still a little rough around the edges, is certainly worth checking out if you're a Firefox 4 user. Download Rainbow 0.2 for Firefox 4 here.
Mozilla Labs Rainbow updated to version 0.2 -- now works with Windows and Linux as well as Mac OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
The SysInternals team has just announced a major new update to technician favorite Process Explorer. Version 14 includes a lengthy list of feature additions and tweaks, and it's available for download now.

Process Explorer now shows the total CPU utilization for multiprocess apps like Google Chrome. A pair of new monitoring tools have been added, and allow tracking of hard disk and network activity. By default, they're all crammed into Process Explorer's main toolbar, but a quick drag-and-drop gives you a full-window timeline.

Sadly, my desktop system won't be able to take advantage of one big addition to Process Explorer 14: support for more than 64 CPUs. One day...

Let me just come right out and say it: TeamViewer is the best remote control application for Windows PCs today. I've tried numerous apps, and nothing comes close to TeamViewer's performance on a WAN. For LAN situations, Windows Remote Desktop rocks. But when you've got the whole wide Internet between you and the computer you'd like to control, nothing beats TeamViewer. I use it several times per week, for extended sessions (hours on end), and it's always a joy to use. So yes, I'm a rabid fan, and I'm not ashamed.

And now, TeamViewer has announced a new beta for version 6. If you use TeamViewer 5, you'll notice the look and feel is different. But changes are more than skin-deep:

Custom QuickSupport is a feature that lets you connect to existing customers much more quickly, without getting their ID and password newly every time.

QuickJoin is a new feature that lets you send the session data to participants beforehand. This is great for presentations - the participants connect to your computer, and not vice versa. You no longer need to enter the data for each of the participants manually.

Reconnection after reboot makes sure TeamViewer will re-establish the connection even after the remote computer went down and came back up.

There are several other options; if you're not using TeamViewer yet, you really should start. But remember this is still a beta, so if you use it to control nuclear reactors or a personal army of killer robots, you may want to hold off on the upgrade.

TeamViewer Beta 6 is now out, remote control freaks rejoice originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST.
Ever wanted an easier way to access all of Windows' built-in management tools and settings screens? All-In-One Tray might be just what you've been searching for. It's a small, simple app that provides three-click access to nearly any option or built-in utility Windows has to offer.

Everything from ncpa.cpl (network connections) to ipconfig /flushdns is within easy reach. AIO Tray also lets you configure four custom user paths -- which you can point at specific applications or use in tandem with an app like NirCmd to perform just about any action you can imagine with minimal fuss. It's an incredibly handy little app, and worked nicely on both Windows 7 32- and 64-bit test systems.

There are certain words in English that are very easy to get wrong, like aggravate, exaggerate, and acquainted (as you see in the screenshot). AutoCorrect for English (ACE) is a fantastic script for correcting exactly those type of mistakes, and it does so seamlessly, quickly, and across your entire system.

ACE is very easy to overlook it, because it hasn't been updated since 2007, it doesn't have its own Web page, and it's just a lowly script (not even an application). However, if you do any sort of writing, you really owe it to yourself to try it out.

The script corrects about 4,700 common misspellings (including the word "mispelling") based on lists from Wikipedia, MS Word, and other sources. Correction is very fast - it is done via AutoHotkey's "hotstring" mechanism, which means that it often happens before you even notice you've made a mistake.

Adding new words is easy: simply highlight the word you've just misspelled and hit Win+H. A small window will pop up that shows the word and asks for the correct spelling. Once you enter the correct spelling and hit OK, that's it - you will never make that typo again.

The script is lightweight, free, fast, and easily configurable.
VidCoder is a nice, little DVD ripper for Windows -- it provides a simple, streamlined interface, supports encoding presets, and uses Hanbrake's processing engine for the heavy lifting. One feature which was notably absent from the last version we covered was support for Blu-Ray discs. That has been added in version 0.7.0, and VidCoder is now better than ever.

One other nice feature VidCoder offers is automatic preview image creation. That's been tweaked as well, and you can now choose to create from 10 to 30 images via the options menu. The built-in previewer has also gotten more responsive (especially when displaying high-def content) thanks to the addition of memory and disk caching.

You'll need the .Net 4.0 framework to run VidCoder -- as well as an app to circumvent that bothersome copy protection on your discs.

FluffyApp for Windows is a terrifically easy way to share screenshots and files online. Since it arrived with its CloudApp-for-Windows goodness, developer Richard Wang has been busy adding new features -- including several incredibly useful ones in version 0.8.7 and 0.8.8.

For starters, FluffyApp now supports region selections, so you're no longer limited to full-desktop or program-window screenshots. The hotkey combination can now be tweaked as well, in case you don't want FluffyApp handling things every time you hit Prt Scrn. Wang has also beefed up the FluffyApp system tray menu. You can now rename files, copy BBCode, make URLs public, and delete items all from the comfort of your tray.

Way back in May, uTorrent 's Project Griffin gave us a sneak peek at its new App Studio. Today, the new version has gone live -- and uTorrent 2.2 will be bringing app support to its 65 million users. Among the app options on launch day are BitDefender's Virus Guard, TuneUp (which we've covered before), and content apps for TED, ZuluMusic, and VODO. There's also TorrentTweet, which lets you post status updates about specific files. On the privacy side of things, uTorrent 2.2 makes it easier for users to configure and use proxies -- a welcome improvement for those of you looking for a bit of anonymity while you transfer files.

The uTorrent installer -- like many other free apps -- also includes a bundled toolbar and offers to switch your homepage and default search at the end of the process. Make sure you untick the boxes unless you actually want what's being offered.

We love a good app with Windows 7 shell integration features -- like GVNotifier. It's a slick little Google Voice notification and messaging app with jump list and progress indicator support. Install the app, log in to your account, and you've got slide-up access to contacts, call history, and voice mail messages. GVNotifier even lets you send SMS messages to your Google Voice contacts right from your desktop -- and you can pin favorite contacts to the list for faster access.

You can even make GVNotifier portable if you like -- simply create a settings.xml file in the same directory as GVNotifier.net.exe and it's ready to drop on your USB flash drive. The app will also run on Windows XP and Vista systems, though you'll need the .Net 3.5 framework installed.

Over at CyberNet News, Ryan Wagner's only real gripe with GVNotifier is how it handles contacts with multiple phone numbers. They're not displayed individually, so you have to click through each entry until you find the one you're after.

Plenty of business and agencies won't be migrating to Windows 7 any time soon. Part of the problem is that a good number of those pesky old apps require Internet Explorer 6, though Unibrows may soon offer a solution for that particular stumbling block.

The U.S. Air Force, however, is ready to forge ahead. According to Defense Systems, the USAF plans to have all of their 600,000 systems upgraded to Windows 7 by December of next year. "It's a daunting task," said Air Force CI, Lt. Gen. William Lord. Also daunting: trimming the number of applications running on the USAF network from 19,000 to 10,000 without inciting an end user revolt.

The USAF migration is a big win for Microsoft as it could certainly encourage others to migrate to Windows 7. When reached for comment about the upgrade, Maverick responded, "This could be complicated. You know on the first one I crashed and burned." Yes, yes, I know Maverick was a Navy pilot, but who can resist a good Top Gun reference?

U.S. Air Force begins migrating 600,000 systems to Windows 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST.
I recently covered Aerofoil, which can be used to make your laptop a bit smarter about its power usage. Now you can show your desktop computer or Windows Home Server the same kind of love using SmartPower. While SmartPower has some features in common with the previously covered Shutdown Timer, there's one major difference: it can make your computer wake up, too.

You can use SmartPower to force your computer go to sleep every day at 2AM and wake up right before you're due back from work. Combined with Windows' auto-logon feature, it would seem to you as if your computer is constantly on. In reality, though, you would be saving quite a bit of power -- as well as wear and tear on its hard drives and fans.

SmartPower also lets you set other conditions. For example, you can have your computer go to sleep at 2AM unless it is currently downloading something, or if a program is running, or if there's a specific host on the network (for example, your laptop is on, and you're streaming media from your home server).

All in all, this is a clever application. It does something that I wish had been built into Windows in the first place.

Ever thought: 'You know what my iPhone is missing? Windows 3.1!' Well never fear, because Windows 3.1 is here -- courtesy of iDos aka DosPad. The folks over at PikiGeek have put together a guide to getting the Grandfather of the modern Windows operating system running on your iDevice of choice. You unfortunately need a jailbroken device, but with the latest release of redsn0w or limera1n, even iOS4.1 is unlocked with ease. After a bit of fiddling, you'll be able to play Minesweeper and even SkiFree, with Windows 3.1 running at full speed. How's that for progress!
Windows users might not be familiar with Droplr -- it's a drag-to-upload sharing program for Mac and very similar to CloudApp. And like CloudApp, there's no official Windows version.

Enter windroplr from developer Bruno Carvalho, which brings Droplr's simple sharing kung fu to your Windows desktop. To upload a file, simply drag it onto the floating gray dropzone. Once the system tray icon goes completely purple, your upload is done and a notification balloon appears with the short URL to your file. One advantage Droplr (and windroplr) have over CloudApp (and FluffyApp) is that the URL are about as short as they can get.

By right-clicking the WinDroplr tray icon, you can also quickly capture and upload a region of your screen. There's also a text option which supports plain text, markdown, or code -- the difference being how the text is displayed by Droplr when someone clicks your link. To show or hide the drop zone, just left-click on the windroplr tray icon.

windroplr uses your Twitter credentials to log you in -- though your password is discarded after the first use. It's only used to acquire a token from Droplr and an API key from Twitter. About the only thing I'd change is adding an option to drag directly to the system tray icon instead of displaying the floating dropzone -- apart from that minor niggle, windroplr is a great little app.

Download winroplr (.NET Framework 4.0 is required)

Get Droplr's easy file, screenshot, and text sharing on Windows with windroplr originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST. TweetDeck's User Streams Preview introduced real-time Twitter streams to anyone who was willing to beta test, and now TweetDeck v0.36 is bringing it to the masses. This release merges the User Streams Preview with the "original" branch of the app, giving all users the option to view their friends' tweets in real time.

Real-time is on by default, so make sure to turn it off in preferences if you'd rather receive your tweets the old-fashioned way. If you do decide to go the real-time route, you may also want to adjust your popup notification settings to avoid getting spammed when tweets start coming in at warp speed.
TweetDeck's official blog says there's also a mysterious "one more thing" in this release, supposedly enabling some kind of magical "cross-platform TweetDeck communication."

This update is also crucial because it supports Twitter's new system of numbering tweets, codenamed "Snowflake." Apps that don't support Snowflake will break after November 24th, so current TweetDeck users should make sure to snag v0.36 in the coming weeks.
