Mint is pretty much the behemoth of personal budget management. But it's also a tad complex, and it's very American. If you happen to live outside the US, you probably won't be able to use all of Mint's options.

Sprouty is no Mint-killer; it doesn't seem to have any such aspirations, either. It's a very, very simple budgeting application that feels intentionally international: I could not find a single currency symbol.

It's as bare-bones as it gets: First, you tell it approximately how much money you make. From that information, it builds a tentative budget for you - how much you might be spending on health, housing, utilities, food, transportation, and a myriad other areas. The numbers (and areas) are merely suggestions - you're supposed to tweak them for your own situation.

Once you're all set up, you can start logging your expenses. Logging an expense couldn't be easier: You set the date, enter a description and some tags, and then the sum. Sprouty's Overview screen then shows you how you're doing on the various areas of your budget, each represented as a progress bar.

It's very basic, and doesn't aim high. If budgeting seems kind of scary, this is one application you might want to try. The only thing I'd like to see is a mobile client.

Sprouty is a bare-bones personal budgeting application originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST.
Scraping is a technique whereby a website or tool extracts select information from another website. For example, when you type a difficult word into Google and instantly see a definition for that word from some Web dictionary, that's because Google "scraped" that information from the dictionary. The term (and practice) has some negative connotations, because scrapers can be used to steal blog content and for other nefarious purposes. But as Google (and many others) show, it doesn't have to be used for evil.

Scraper is a Chrome add-on that somewhat simplifies the process of scraping information from a webpage. I say "somewhat" because you still have to know XPath or jQuery selector syntax, but that's pretty easy to master if you know a bit of HTML.

Once the extension is installed, you can right-click any page element and select "Scrape similar". You then get a window with a single table row, and the XPath expression leading to the exact element you've selected. It is now up to you to generalize that expression so as to get a broader match. As you can see in the screenshot, it was quite simple to write an expression that yields all of the post headlines and links on the DLS homepage.

Once you have the information you wanted, you can click Export to Google Docs and get a spreadsheet with all of your data in tabular form, ready for further processing.

Scraper is very much a work in progress; while jQuery selector syntax is supported, you only get the XPath expression filled in automatically (and it's too specific). Also, it does not support saving expressions as templates, so every time you want to use it, you have to re-build the XPath expression you need. I'm sure this will all get fixed in due time.

Scraper for Chrome lets you easily create spreadsheets from Web data originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 14:30:00 EST. The call recording feature enables you to save your Google voice chats without using any additional software. For incoming Google Voice calls only, you'll see a button to start/stop recording right in your call window.

Call recording might be great for doing interviews, but it's not very useful for playing detective. When you hit record, Google Voice will play an audio message saying "this call is now being recorded," and when you stop recording, it will say "call recording off."

Recordings are saved in the "recordings" tab of your Google Voice account -- I looked for them in Gmail itself for a while, but I think opening Voice is the only way to get to them -- and you can download them as space-efficient low-quality mono MP3 files. If great recording quality is a primary concern, you're probably still better off with Skype and a third-party call recorder. For ease of use, though, you can't really beat Gmail's new built in one-click option.
Facebook and MySpace held a joint event today to announce MySpace's new Mashup with Facebook feature, which can sync all of your Facebook "likes" to MySpace in one click. MySpace will be getting Facebook like buttons, rolling out across the service starting today. Interests on MySpace will also be linked to relevant interests on Facebook, and MySpace will use your Facebook data to recommend content for you.

If you're a MySpace rebel who wants to resist Facebook's empire, all is not lost. Users will be able to opt into Mashup, so you don't have to commingle your Facebook and MySpace likes and interests if you don't want to. MySpace isn't dead or being bought out by Facebook, and CEO Mike Jones says that the site's new redesign has increased traffic and received a positive response from users.

Facebook does a Mashup with MySpace, syncs 'likes' across services originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 16:25:00 EST. Twitter hasn't made the algorithm -- or the scores themselves -- public, but former CEO Evan Williams told the Web 2.0 Summit that the scores factor into Twitter's "Who To Follow" feature.

As for whether the scores will ever become public, Williams didn't rule it out. That would certainly be in keeping with Twitter's pattern of creating official services that duplicate anything popular third-party apps are doing. Twitter has previously launched its own ads, its own official apps, and most recently, its own analytics service. Reputation scores could be next.

ReadWriteWeb reports that Twitter has just signed an agreement with Gnip, a social data streaming service, to offer half of Twitter's total message traffic for $360,000/year. That is, if you want to analyze Twitter data, you're going to have to pay Gnip for the privilege.

With this move, Twitter is effectively outsourcing the "tweet analysis" business. The tweets sold via Gnip are not for display purposes - meaning, if you buy them, you must keep them largely to yourself and be content analyzing them and using the results. Customers like Google, who use 100 percent of Twitter's firehose for displaying instant search results, will still deal directly with Twitter.

Twitter signs Gnip to provide firehose access for $360,000/year originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 07:00:00 EST. Twitter has been teasing users with an analytics service for some time, a way to track the vital statistics about your tweets and the responses they get. Well, Twitter Analytics has entered a small invitation-only test phase, and the first screenshots are starting to dribble out.
Mashable has two screenshots, one showing a "timeline activity" page, with your follows and unfollows over time, and then a list of your recent tweets, along with the number of favorites, retweets and replies each one received.

The second shot is a stats display for Promoted Tweets, one of the ways to buy ads on Twitter. Promoted Tweets has its own tab, where users can see how many clicks, replies and retweets their promotions are bringing in. This is probably the real reason behind Twitter analytics. Sure, the average user might want stats, but Twitter is making these stats free to all. The way this product makes money is by making Twitter's ad platform easier to use and more attractive to companies.

As for when Twitter Analytics might roll out to your account, it probably won't be this month -- the screenshots came from a Promoted Tweets user, so that group will probably get to test the service first. Twitter has said in the past that they're aiming to release Analytics by the end of the year, though, so it's likely you could be using it as early as December.

Twitter previews official analytics service, prepares to release it for free originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 19:45:00 EST. Hey, Twitter fans! Before we jump into this week's cool apps, there's a bit of gossip hanging over the Twitterverse, and I don't think I can sneak by without mentioning that the Twitter founding team of Ev, Biz and Jack is now back together after Jack Dorsey's return to Twitter.

Jack was one of the original creators of Twitter, and he served as CEO when the company launched. Later, Evan Williams took over the position, and Jack pursued other ventures (like the Square mobile card reader). As we recently reported, Ev stepped down as CEO last month, to focus on Twitter's product development, letting Twitter's top money man, Dick Costolo, take over. It was understood that Costolo would be the guy to lead Twitter into greater profits based on a viable system of advertising.

But wait a minute ... Ev is focusing on Twitter's features and keeping it cool and relevant, but that's what Jack is coming back to do. Are the two working together, or are the rumors of bad blood between the founders true? My sense is that there might be some tension there, but various tech gossip blogs are exaggerating the story. Jack and Ev are both smart guys with a history of good ideas, and their two heads will probably be better than one for Twitter's future.

Now, onward to some excellent Twitter apps ...

Continue reading Twitter Tuesday - ex-CEO Jack Dorsey returns to Twitter

Twitter Tuesday - ex-CEO Jack Dorsey returns to Twitter originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 18:00:00 EST.

Yahoo has just launched Mafia Wars and FishVille, two games developed by Zynga, the company best known for FarmVille and its other games on the Facebook platform. In the past few months though, Zynga has shifted away from being tied exclusively to Facebook and has launched its games on Windows Live Messenger, MSN Games -- and now Yahoo.

Mafia Wars and FishVille will appear in Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Games, My Yahoo, Yahoo Pulse and Yahoo's browser toolbar. Starting the Zynga integration with just two games -- and not the most popular ones (where's FarmVille?) -- clearly means that Yahoo is in sort of a testing phase. If all goes well, expect to see more Zynga titles on Yahoo's properties soon.

To do this, you'll need a Yahoo! account (Mozilla's Asa Dotzler says a Windows Live account works, too). It's free, so you can sign up for a throwaway if you don't already have one. Once you've done that, take a look at our step-by-step instructions for exporting your friends' contact info, after the jump.
Continue reading How to rescue your friends' email addresses from Facebook and export them to Gmail

How to rescue your friends' email addresses from Facebook and export them to Gmail originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. Google Hotpot is new a social place recommendation engine built on Google's existing Place pages. Up until now, Places have been rated and reviewed based on outside sources like Yelp, but Hotpot lets users rate local establishments using their Google Profiles. After you've entered a few ratings, Hotpot will use your tastes to recommend other places you might like, sort of like a Netflix for restaurants.

You can also add friends on Hotpot (again, via their Google Profiles). Adding friends is easy, as Hotpot can find friends through your Gmail address book. Once you've added friends, their ratings will get a little extra weight in recommending places for you.

As for the site itself, Hotpot has a pretty slick grid-based UI, with each place in a box featuring a photo and a star rating. Up top, you've got counters tallying your ratings and reviews. You can quickly access your history, your previously rated places, or your friends' recent ratings from a sidebar. The whole thing is quite user-friendly, and oriented toward browsing versus searching, which makes it ideal for finding somewhere to go out to dinner.

Since it doesn't require existing Google users to sign up or add a whole new bunch of contacts, Hotpot actually has a decent chance of catching on, and it certainly makes Google's Place pages more fun and useful.

Google launches Hotpot for social place recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST. Apparently, it all started with a tweet from an "anonymous New York fashion PR", according to Frockwriter. That tweet was the cause for a lot of coverage in itself, until it was made public that many people in the fashion world had been invited to a Google party called "High Tech Fuses with High Fashion", that will take place on Wednesday. That certainly seems to confirm that Google is working on something fashion-related.

The word is that Google will launch Boutiques.com, a fashion site that will use image-recognition technology that Google got its hands on back when it acquired Like.com. Boutiques.com will apparently feature online shops selling merchandise from many designers and retailers, and will also sell the looks worn by celebrities and influencers.

Gizmodo has uncovered that Boutiques.com is owned by Like.com (also owned by Google) and this may be another small confirmation of the above being true. It would clearly make sense for Google to get into fashion e-commerce, because there's plenty of money to be made there. Whether or not that is what Google is doing, we're bound to know for sure in just a couple of days.

Boutiques.com, Google's fashion shopping site, may launch on Wednesday originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. In addition to Zoho Assist, their Java-based remote assistance app, the company is now offering Zoho Support, a full-featured help desk application.

Support packs tons of essential features, from managing customer requests and contracts to maintaining tasks and contacts. There's also a powerful reporting feature so you can analyze your Support data. It's an excellent option for small or medium-sized businesses who need a way to track customer issues and problem resolutions. Access to the core help desk functionality is free for one help desk user and up to 25 incidents per month -- which might not seem like a lot, but should suffice for small-time freelancers. Paid plans start at $12 per month per user.
The module can be seen on the right side of the Top News, My News and Upcoming pages on Digg. Right now it shows five stories at a time, with one of them being highlighted as a Hot Story. The new section will also allow Digg to aggregate stories on a particular topic.

Unlike the rest of Digg, where users control the stories' performance by casting their votes to either 'digg' or 'bury' them, the Breaking News section will be curated by Digg staff, in an effort to showcase important news as quickly as possible.

Apple's Ping social network, built for sharing music preferences with your friends via iTunes, disappeared from everyone's radar right after it launched. It might be getting a second wind now, though, thanks to a partnership with Twitter. Ping now lets you discover and add your Twitter contacts, and share your Ping posts as tweets.

Here's how it works, according to Twitter's official blog: if you link your Twitter account to Ping, your likes, purchases and reviews will be sent out as tweets. They're not just any tweets, though: Twitter and Ping have built in a "rich media experience" so you can preview a song or click a purchase link directly from a Ping tweet. The song and album info will also pop up in the details pane on the right side of Twitter.com.

After Facebook integration for Ping fell through, Apple's social network withered away because it had no connection to its users' existing social graphs. This Twitter partnership brings Ping out of isolation in a big way, by not only leveraging Twitter to help people add Ping contacts, but also letting Ping invade Twitter.com directly. It would be nice to see Twitter offer an option to filter out Ping tweets, though, because some users will inevitably see them as spam.
Twitter connects with Apple's Ping for easy music sharing originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. SugarSync has announced that users of its basic, free plan will now get 5 GB of storage 'in the cloud'. Previously, that limit was 2 GB -- a limit that its main competitor, Dropbox, still has. The free 5 GB plan includes unlimited device support, and, as before, you can sync any folder(s) you wish across computers (Windows and Mac) and smartphones running iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry OS.

New SugarSync users will get the increased capacity immediately, while existing users' limit will become 5 GB over the next day or so. A couple of weeks ago Box.net also upped the storage quota in its free plan to 5 GB, while Microsoft's Live Mesh 2011 has also been offering 5 GB for sync since it came out of beta. Therefore, it certainly looks like 5 is the new 2 in cloud storage and sync. Dropbox, your move.

Howdy, Twitter fans. Looks like it's Tuesday again already, and it's time for another installment of the best Twitter news and app of. Let's get to it!

The biggest news this week is an upcoming improvement to Twitter's Places feature. No, it's not a head-to-head Foursquare or Facebook Places competitor (yet), but it will allow businesses to claim their physical locations. If you haven't seen a Places page yet, take a look at the page for Twitter HQ. Note that these pages show all recent tweets sent from that location, which could be totally useful to a business.

Twitter told Mashable that
"Claiming Twitter Places is not available at this time. We're experimenting with a variety features. Allowing businesses to claim a Place is a natural thing to consider for the future." This could mean any number of things, from a very basic tool for business to advertise specials and deals on their Twitter Places pages to a full-on check-in system. Twitter will need to find an incentive for business to claim pages, and an incentive for users to add their locations to tweets ... could Twitter Deals be around the corner (they worked so well the first time around as Early Bird)?
Google has just announced the availability of a Zip export tool for waves created in the almost defunct Google Wave. This looks like it's just the first step of many that will let you get the data you've created in Wave out of the service before it's eventually shut down forever.

Within any wave, there's now an Export menu that lets you save the wave and any attachments that have been added to it into a Zip archive. Of course, manually saving each wave may work well for those who only have a handful of waves they want to save, but isn't really a viable option for Wave power users (because apparently there were some of those). For them, an easier batch export method is coming soon.

Google aims to keep Wave available at least until the end of this year, and, rather intriguingly, has announced it's working on "ways for you to access waves through Google Docs". This may just mean that a tool to import waves into Google Docs will be made available -- or perhaps Google had a change of heart and is going to bake some kind of Wave functionality into Docs? Time will tell, for sure.
Google Wave now lets you export waves to Zip files originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 17:45:00 EST. Spotify has started making a seven-day trial of its Premium subscription available. Spotify Premium is a paid subscription that gives you access to all the top notch features such as higher quality audio, ad-free listening, mobile access, and offline mode for both desktop and mobile.

The free trial does come with caveats though. First off, you'll have to enter your payment details when you sign up for it. Then, if you don't manually cancel the subscription before the trial runs out, it will automagically turn itself into a full blown Spotify Premium subscription and you will be billed once when the trial expires and then every month on the same date. Another catch (but this is true for subscribing to Spotify Premium in general) is that your credit card must have been issued in the country you've set in your Spotify profile.

If you can get past these issues, the trial does provide the full Spotify Premium experience and isn't limited in any way. You can sign up for the free seven-day trial here.

I thought the Web had gotten over the irritating conception that omitting vowels from domain names somehow makes them sound cooler. Alas, LinkPeelr proves me wrong.

Domain name aside, this is a handy service. You feed it with a shortened URL, click Peel, and you get to see where it leads. A nice feature is the ability to easily repeat the process. This is handy in case a shortened URL points to another shortened URL, which only then points to the actual destination. In this case, all you do is simply hit Peel again, and LinkPeelr reveals the destination once more.

I took Download Squad's URL and shortened it with goo.gl, and then I took the goo.gl URL and shortened that with bit.ly, and LinkPeelr worked as advertised. It was very fast, too.

Perhaps more useful than the site itself is its Chrome extension. After installing it, you can hover over any shortened URL and get a nice-looking tooltip with its destination. I say "nice-looking" because it's not styled as a default Windows tooltip; they've applied their own formatting, and it's rather swanky. The only niggle I've experienced with the add-on is that it truncates URLs that are too long, which it really shouldn't do.

LinkPeelr website and Google Chrome extension un-shorten short URLs originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST.
