I'm sorry; I simply could not resist covering a service with a name like Zukmo. Apart from the name, there's absolutely no connection between myself and the service. And I must say, the name is just about the most remarkable thing about this service at the moment (which is saying a lot).

It's basically a Web bookmarking service. I can't even call it "social bookmarking" because there doesn't appear to be anything social about it at the moment. You get a bookmarklet or a browser add-on (for Chrome, Firefox or IE). You then click the button when you're visiting a page you'd like to bookmark, and the page is saved. Very straightforward.

One significant difference from Delicious and Diigo is that Zukmo supports only preconfigured "categories". Meaning, you can't just tag your bookmarks - you need to set up categories beforehand, and then select a category for your bookmark.

The site's design feels fairly dated. The copyright starts at 2004 but extends all the way to 2010, which explains the general appearance. All in all, if your name doesn't happen to begin with "Zuk", I see no reason for you to try Zukmo. I still had to cover it, though.

Zukmo is the best-named Web bookmarking service on the planet originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST.
Sometimes you may want to send someone a whole list of websites to look at. Maybe you even want them to look at the sites in a given sequence, like when you're sharing the results of a search for a new car or a vacation spot.

BridgeURL is a fairly elegant service that accepts a list of links, and spits out a single bit.ly link. When you click this link, you're taken to the first website on the list, but it has subtle semi-transparent overlays on both sides. The left one leads to the previous site on the chain, while the right leads to the next site. (They're not semi-transparent on the screenshot because when you hover over them, they turn solid.)

There's also a bottom bar, but it's fairly unobtrusive. There were no banners or pop-ups as far as I was able to see. The only annoyance with the service is that for some odd reason, it forces you to feed it URLs starting with http:// or https:// - meaning, you can't write "downloadsquad.com" or even "www.downloadsquad.com". I have no idea why it's not smart enough to figure out the http:// on its own. Other than that, it's a fairly handy service.

BridgeURL lets you send a tour of several websites in one link originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST.
Coming up with a good domain name these days is akin to finding a parking spot in New-York. Accordingly, tools for finding free domain names abound, and most of them offer some sort of a "brainstorming interface". The idea is to help you come up with a domain name nobody (including yourself) considered before.

Domize is one of the nicer attempts at this sort of thing. At its simplest form, it's a very fast find-as-you-type service for free domain names. As you type each new letter in the name of your domain, Domize quickly checks whether or not that domain name is free for .com, .net, .org, .co, .us and .biz.

But as I said, that's just scratching the surface of what Domize can do. Click Options and you can change the TLDs (top-level-domains, such as .at, .me and others), toggle the find-as-you-type functionality, and change the domain registrar used.

Once you're done tweaking the options, click Advanced to find out what neat syntax directives Domize supports. It actually has its own expression language: You can type something such as [like:cool] to search for synonyms of the word "cool" (coolheaded.net is up for grabs, by the way).

When you finally find a domain you like, hovering over the TLD shows a pop-up with price quotes from several different registrars, usually with significant differences in price. This is a beautiful tool.

Domize offers fast, powerful, find-as-you-type domain name search originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST.
It sometimes happens that a certain word eludes me. I know it exists, I even know what it sounds like or how it begins or ends -- but for the life of me, I can't recall what the exact word is. For situations like these, Tip of My Tongue can come in very handy. To find the word "download," I only had to tell it that it starts and ends with D, has W somewhere in the middle, and means "transfer."

The search is very fast, done on-the-fly, as you type. You can search by word parts (beginning, middle, end), by certain letters which it must have or can't have, or by its meaning (you get to specify up to three synonyms). You can then refine the search by specifying a minimum and maximum length, and even what the word sounds like (i.e, what it rhymes with).

To me, this seems to cover all bases. Even a vague notion of what a certain word is should be enough to hone in on that word using Tip of My Tongue. This is definitely one for any writer's toolbox.

Tip of My Tongue helps you find that word you're looking for originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 26 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. This matches the Hulu Plus price drop from last week. Of course, both services have different libraries of TV shows and movies -- and Hulu Plus still has ads!

The new plan is targeted squarely at the growing army of those that find physical media a thing of the past. Still, a difference of just $2 is a small price to pay for the option of unlimited DVDs.

In other news, Netflix has increased the price of its DVD-loaning plans, presumably to cover the growth of its streaming service. One-DVD-at-a-time now costs a dollar more ($9.99), with larger plans increasing by a similar percentage.

The only-two-DVDs-a-month plan price remains unchanged.
The clipping relates to the Cloud Computing chapter of the book, but the chapter number doesn't match up.

This is an obvious, and genius step for Google. Not only are they capitalizing on the book's great illustrations, but they're also dragging the untechnological masses kicking and screaming into the HTML5 future. The reader sees the print advertisement, loads up the website... and sees an e-book that looks just like a real book!

Less obvious, but more impressive, is the fact that Google isn't pushing Chrome as the only choice of modern browser. The 'What Browser?' site that the e-book points to features a Windowsesque 'Browser Ballot', with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera all being shuffled randomly.

It looks as if Google might be taking a leaf from Microsoft's Beauty of the Web book. Looking at the bigger picture, an up-to-date Web is infinitely more powerful and interesting than a crusty and antiquated Web. Want to make a book out of your Facebook to show your grandkids one day? Well now you can, with a bit of help from the Ninuku Archivist and a printer. For the princely sum of 24 of your hard-earned bucks, if you can stomach the massive privacy risk, Ninuku will automatically download your Facebook activity and make monthly logs divided into book-friendly, chronological chapters for one whole year. The chapters can then be download in PDF form, or combined into annals of your choosing. All you need then is a printer and you can create your very own leather-bound, ready-for-the-grandchildren, Facebook book -- if indeed books still exist by then.

Of course being the modern, tech-savvy person you are, you could always distribute it as an e-book, call it your memoirs perhaps. I'm sure people would love to read your daily stream. Adrian Mole eat your heart out.
20 Things I Learned About Browsers And The Web is a beautiful and educational example of what we can expect from the HTML5 Web. It was developed by the Google Chrome team to showcase both the power of its browser, and of HTML5 itself.

20 Things is fully illustrated, too, and on each page a cheesy subtitle or piece of poetry awaits. Put simply, it's a delight. If you're a hardened Web expert, spend a few minutes leafing through it to enjoy the HTML5esque features -- the offline storage, the page-turning, flipping the light switch in the bottom-right corner -- and then send the link to a friend or family member. Check the Google announcement if you want more details.

It's a damn sight better than Google's last attempt at an HTML5 showpiece, that's for sure. At least this one actually works with Firefox and Internet Explorer 9! It's a little bit slow with Opera, but there should be a hardware-accelerated beta version of Opera 11 any day now...
Google's beautiful HTML5 guide to the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
I find Google's Autocomplete (or "suggest") feature very interesting because it seems to have spawned a quite a few by-products. Web Seer is a nice example. You feed it with a couple of prefixes, and it polls Google for all of the suggestions for them and then spews out a simple visual representation.

The screenshot above shows a snippet of the output for "should they" versus "will my cat." Perhaps that's not the best example because these two searches aren't fully comparable; when I tried "can he be" versus "can she be," I got some more comparable results, such as "be so cold" for the guys and "be so heartless" for the girls (ouch!).

It's a Flash app, so if you happen to be taking part in the crusade against Flash, it won't work. But on the bright side, where it does work, it's very fast. There's no Submit button or anything like that - it's completely live and on-the-fly, with the graphic updating right as you type.

Web Seer lets you visually compare Google Autocomplete results originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. Facebook and MySpace held a joint event today to announce MySpace's new Mashup with Facebook feature, which can sync all of your Facebook "likes" to MySpace in one click. MySpace will be getting Facebook like buttons, rolling out across the service starting today. Interests on MySpace will also be linked to relevant interests on Facebook, and MySpace will use your Facebook data to recommend content for you.

If you're a MySpace rebel who wants to resist Facebook's empire, all is not lost. Users will be able to opt into Mashup, so you don't have to commingle your Facebook and MySpace likes and interests if you don't want to. MySpace isn't dead or being bought out by Facebook, and CEO Mike Jones says that the site's new redesign has increased traffic and received a positive response from users.

Facebook does a Mashup with MySpace, syncs 'likes' across services originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 16:25:00 EST.
Not everyone uses Google Reader; some people (a dying breed, perhaps) like to consume their RSS feeds locally, using a desktop feed reader. Firefox has long had a Live Bookmarks feature that gave it some of those "desktop feed reader" powers: Live Bookmarks understands RSS, and it can always show you a list of a website's most recent headlines.

RSS Live Links brings just that sort of functionality to Google Chrome, along with a nice extra feature: instant notifications.

Whenever one of the feeds you've subscribed to updates, you get a nice sound effect (a human voice going "Boing!"), the icon shakes, and an unread count appears. When you then click the icon, you can see a list of the unread items in each feed, and hover over them to see a preview. Naturally, clicking an item opens it in a new tab.

This is a powerful add-on; it has a very rich configuration interface, with no less than 20 different options (I counted!). You can also configure the color scheme, select one of several different notification sounds, and customize it in a myriad other ways. Slick!

RSS Live Links for Chrome lets you monitor news feeds in real-time originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 21:00:00 EST.
Gravity, a new company set up by three former MySpace executives, has just had its public launch at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. The company's rather ambitious goal is to become the "Pandora of the Web," able to bring you the content it thinks you might be interested in based on your interests. To gauge what you might like to view, Gravity proposes to use your public social network feeds in order to create an "interest graph" and, from there, use a language model currently consisting of 100 million (!) phrases to distinguish how things fit together. For instance, "free throw" relates to "basketball," which in turn, relates to "sport" -- meaning you might like content revolving around sport.

First out the gate for Gravity is Twinterest, a product that can build-out an interest graph based on your tweets and then compare it with your friends. The Orbit, a personalized "Web newspaper" is also on the way, hoping to truly demonstrate Gravity's "this is what you might like" technology. The end game for Gravity, however, seems to be in the website personalization space, with the idea that you can land on your favorite site and hit a "personalization" button, which will bring highlighted content to the front, based on what you're likely to be interested in.

Interesting stuff, with serious potential, but other companies have been and gone attempting to do this kind of thing. Representing its first chic service, Google has just launched Boutiques.com. In true Google style, Boutiques parses hundreds of thousands of products to produce a personalized shopping experience that's tailored just for you. Interestingly, there's no sign of an accompanying Android app -- only an iPad app [iTunes].

Boutiques uses 'fashion rules' garnered from high-fashion taste-makers -- designers, fashion bloggers, stylists and celebrities -- to produce a wardrobe of clothes just for you. Have a quick step through the Stylyzer to discover your favorite style of clothes -- or take a look at the wondrous array of dress styles that you can choose from.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to shoehorn you into buying merchandise. Once you're done filling in your loved (and hated) styles of dress, top, bottom and shoes, you're shown to your storefront, which is full of perfectly-picked items of clothing with all the right accessories. Take a look at my storefront, if you can't be bothered to sign up and click through each of the steps.

Sadly, Boutiques only offers female clothes at the moment -- and the products it lists are all from American stores. Still, it's early days -- I'm sure Google has lots more in store.
Google branches out into machine-curated high-fashion with Boutiques.com originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST.
When Microsoft launched IE9, they sponsored a number of interesting demo projects to showcase its hardware acceleration and HTML5 support. I posted about one of these projects some time ago - A Rough Guide To The World.

The Endless Mural is another such showcase project. It's a drawing application with a twist: as you make gestures and draw lines across the canvas, fractals bloom in your wake. That means your gestures serve as a rough outline that the application uses to render a ton of abstract-looking "glyphs" that spiral, explode, and do all sorts of crazy things.

You're not going to draw anything coherent with this, but if you like abstract art, it's certainly fun. It's also surprisingly fine-grained. When you click the Draw menu, you get a selection of four different "gesture behaviors," such as swarm, burst, spiral, etc. You also get to pick from twelve different artwork sets (used for the glyphs drawn on the canvas), and each of those has four possible color variations.

When you're done expressing your inner artist, you can save your work and add it to the site's namesake, the "endless mural" itself. That's a showcase of all of the art created with the site. When you view a drawing in the mural, you can hit Play and see a complete animated playback of how it was created.

One of the things I like about the project is how tasteful Microsoft's sponsorship is. There is no huge IE9 logo plastered all over the page, and you won't find an irritating banner exclaiming "best viewed under IE9." In fact, I've used it with Chrome, and it worked beautifully. The only evidence of Microsoft's support is in small print on the front page of the site: "made possible by the generous support of Microsoft and Internet Explorer 9." That's very nice.

The Endless Mural is an abstract HTML5-powered drawing canvas originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 10:15:00 EST. The module can be seen on the right side of the Top News, My News and Upcoming pages on Digg. Right now it shows five stories at a time, with one of them being highlighted as a Hot Story. The new section will also allow Digg to aggregate stories on a particular topic.

Unlike the rest of Digg, where users control the stories' performance by casting their votes to either 'digg' or 'bury' them, the Breaking News section will be curated by Digg staff, in an effort to showcase important news as quickly as possible.

Apple's Ping social network, built for sharing music preferences with your friends via iTunes, disappeared from everyone's radar right after it launched. It might be getting a second wind now, though, thanks to a partnership with Twitter. Ping now lets you discover and add your Twitter contacts, and share your Ping posts as tweets.

Here's how it works, according to Twitter's official blog: if you link your Twitter account to Ping, your likes, purchases and reviews will be sent out as tweets. They're not just any tweets, though: Twitter and Ping have built in a "rich media experience" so you can preview a song or click a purchase link directly from a Ping tweet. The song and album info will also pop up in the details pane on the right side of Twitter.com.

After Facebook integration for Ping fell through, Apple's social network withered away because it had no connection to its users' existing social graphs. This Twitter partnership brings Ping out of isolation in a big way, by not only leveraging Twitter to help people add Ping contacts, but also letting Ping invade Twitter.com directly. It would be nice to see Twitter offer an option to filter out Ping tweets, though, because some users will inevitably see them as spam.
Twitter connects with Apple's Ping for easy music sharing originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. SugarSync has announced that users of its basic, free plan will now get 5 GB of storage 'in the cloud'. Previously, that limit was 2 GB -- a limit that its main competitor, Dropbox, still has. The free 5 GB plan includes unlimited device support, and, as before, you can sync any folder(s) you wish across computers (Windows and Mac) and smartphones running iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry OS.

New SugarSync users will get the increased capacity immediately, while existing users' limit will become 5 GB over the next day or so. A couple of weeks ago Box.net also upped the storage quota in its free plan to 5 GB, while Microsoft's Live Mesh 2011 has also been offering 5 GB for sync since it came out of beta. Therefore, it certainly looks like 5 is the new 2 in cloud storage and sync. Dropbox, your move.

Howdy, Twitter fans. Looks like it's Tuesday again already, and it's time for another installment of the best Twitter news and app of. Let's get to it!

The biggest news this week is an upcoming improvement to Twitter's Places feature. No, it's not a head-to-head Foursquare or Facebook Places competitor (yet), but it will allow businesses to claim their physical locations. If you haven't seen a Places page yet, take a look at the page for Twitter HQ. Note that these pages show all recent tweets sent from that location, which could be totally useful to a business.
Twitter told Mashable that
"Claiming Twitter Places is not available at this time. We're experimenting with a variety features. Allowing businesses to claim a Place is a natural thing to consider for the future." This could mean any number of things, from a very basic tool for business to advertise specials and deals on their Twitter Places pages to a full-on check-in system. Twitter will need to find an incentive for business to claim pages, and an incentive for users to add their locations to tweets ... could Twitter Deals be around the corner (they worked so well the first time around as Early Bird)?

Today, Google's rolling out a few new enhancements for the mobile version of Google News, which launched only this time last year. The cramped interface has been expanded to make accurate tapping easier for your chunky fingers, while the default story view has been collapsed to make story browsing a less scroll-intensive affair. A simple tap on the headline or snippet opens up the story for consumption, and if you want more -- Google's added a 'More Sources' link that furnishes you with related stories from around the Web.

If you haven't tried it yet, head on over to Google News on your Android, webOS or iOS device to check it out.
Google News enhanced for Android, iPhone and Palm Pre originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 05:48:00 EST.
Sure, you can always just google "15.2 feet in inches," but really, where's the finesse in that? Where's the excitement -- the feeling of turning a knob, cranking a machine, and getting something done?

In other words, if you're seriously bored and feel like using a more tricked out tool for your conversions you could do worse than this little Conversion Tool. The strangest tidbit about this tool is that it is hosted under a real estate marketing website. From what I gather, they cater to Americans who wish to buy property in France (hence the need for unit conversion).

The tool itself looks quite slick, and as far as I can tell (after rummaging through the source code), it does not seem to use Flash at all. It offers conversions between a fairly limited set of measurement units - you get just six weight units, two temperature units, and six length/distance units. It's fairly basic, but it's an interesting design nonetheless.

Conversion Tool lets you easily convert length, temperature, and weight originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 06 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
