This matches the Hulu Plus price drop from last week. Of course, both services have different libraries of TV shows and movies -- and Hulu Plus still has ads!

The new plan is targeted squarely at the growing army of those that find physical media a thing of the past. Still, a difference of just $2 is a small price to pay for the option of unlimited DVDs.

In other news, Netflix has increased the price of its DVD-loaning plans, presumably to cover the growth of its streaming service. One-DVD-at-a-time now costs a dollar more ($9.99), with larger plans increasing by a similar percentage.

The only-two-DVDs-a-month plan price remains unchanged.

Auto HD for YouTube is a fairly simple Chrome add-on, which has a similar function to the many Greasemonkey scripts that do the same thing: it makes YouTube default to high-quality playback. I've tried it out, and here are some quick thoughts:

No auto buffering: Sadly, this add-on doesn't change YouTube's default behavior, which is to just start playing the video rather than buffer and wait for you to hit Play. So if you have a slow connection and still wish to enjoy HD, you might be better off with the Greasemonkey script called YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads.

Doesn't work well with channels: I've tried it out with the Pomplamoose video channel, and it just wouldn't work. The video played at 480p. Only when I clicked through to an individual video page did the add-on kick in.

Handy options: You can have the player auto-widen, and you can set four different quality settings: "Preferred," "Secondary," "Fallback," and even "Secondary fallback." I must say, "Secondary fallback" sounds like a bit of an overkill to me, but it's available.

All in all, it does work. If you'd rather use native Chrome add-ons than Greasemonkey scripts, try it on for size.

Auto HD for YouTube lets you pre-set Chrome for 720p in YouTube originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. This makes 60 Minutes the first prime-time news show to do so and the app blends video content with online features.

The new app offers high-quality video from the television broadcast as well as text versions of the program content -- including previews, segments, web extras and clips. There are also behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the stories that appear on the show and an archive of segments related to the week's headlines. You can search for stories (whether they're from the current or past seasons), search by correspondent's name, and browse segments by categories.

Watching video works over both Wi-Fi and 3G, and the quality is adjusted on-the-fly according to your connection type.

The 60 Minutes iPad app is available now in the iTunes App Store for $4.99.

60 Minutes launches iPad app originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. It's a nice yellow, though, a golden, orangey tone. Anyway, I digress: IMDb for Windows Phone 7 is excellent. It provides, with a couple of flicks, everything a film buff might need.

In the video review (after the break), I take a quick stroll through each of IMDb's main features. If you set your location, you can see the movie screening times at local cinemas. Like the IMDb website, the app's prime focus is on exploring the details of movies (and TV shows), and the app certainly doesn't disappoint in that regard; the app might actually be better than the website! You can watch trailers, browse cast photos, check out related news -- it's fast, easy and pretty.

In many ways the app mirrors the website. You can browse the top 250 films, the bottom 100, the winners of the Best Picture Academy Award, this week's top movies and TV shows... and so on. It's so good in fact that, from now on, I'll be using the app instead of the website.

The only flaw with IMDb for WP7 is that you can't book cinema tickets directly. As far as I'm aware, not even Flixster for WP7 -- IMDb's chief rival -- offers this functionality. Needless to say, the first movie app to offer such a feature will decimate the competition.

The video review is after the break.
Continue reading IMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video)

IMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video) originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST.
Let's say you have a girlfriend. And let's say that girlfriend is in a faraway land, and the only thing keeping you connected is that tangle of wires we fondly call "the Internet." Or maybe you've got a bunch of nerdy friends, each ensconced in his own basement, or perhaps in distant parts of the country.

These are just two situations where something like YouTube Social could come in very handy. It's a neat service for watching videos together with friends, synced in real-time, with chat thrown in for good measure.

What I like most about it is how easy it is to start with: you take the URL of a YouTube video (say, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G5JaicYuVU), and just stick the word "social" after "youtube." So you get http://www.youtubesocial.com/watch?v=6G5JaicYuVU.

You then get a rich (almost cluttered) interface with your video taking center stage, and a TinyURL link that you can send to your friends. They just need to click the link to join you. Now, whenever you play the video, pause it, or even scrub to a different position, their videos follow suit. There's a chat pane where you can all talk about what you're watching, too. You can also give the "remote" to someone else so that they get to control the video.

The only downside is that the service is heavily Facebook-driven. I mean, the only way to get a proper nick ("username") in the chat is to be logged onto Facebook. That's pretty annoying; other than that, it's definitely a handy service!

YouTube Social lets you watch videos with friends online originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST. There good news today for those of you who have been wishing you could sign up for Hulu Plus: the service has officially launched. Better yet, they've knocked the price down from $9.99 to $7.99 -- and preview users will get a credit back for the difference. The price drop has a lot to do with the recent testing of Netflix's streaming-only plan (which is also $7.99 per month).

Hulu's launch announcement also includes plenty of ways to enjoy a little Plus for free:

Buyers of new Sony Bravia TVs or Blu-ray players can get 11 free weeks

New Roku device purchasers get one month free

Preview users will get one week free as a thank-you

Current Hulu customers get a two-week free trial

The announcement also mentions a slew of new devices which will be getting access to Hulu, from Vizio Blu-Ray players to Western Digital's Live TV Plus media player. There's also mention of enhancements to existing Hulu apps for iOS devices and the PS3 which are coming soon -- though no specific details were given.
Hulu Plus now available to all, price dropped to $7.99 a month originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST.
Personally, I think TechSmith's Camtasia is the best screencast recording and editing suite available for Windows today. It's an extremely capable application, and one of its only potential drawbacks is the price - at $300, this is not a cheap piece of software. This is where the giveaway comes in!

TechSmith recently released Camtasia version 7.1, with several interesting new features. Since this is a screencasting application, I figured that the best way to show it off would be by recording a screencast. So I've created an 8-minute review that showcases some of the new features, and you can watch it after the jump. Here are some of the highlights:

New callouts: There are several new types of callouts to draw viewer attention to where you want it, including animated "motion callouts."

Shortcut key callouts: Camtasia now remembers what keystrokes you pressed while recording the video, and it can automatically show this in special callouts (shown in my review).

A new playhead control: This new control makes it easier to select portions of the video. I've explained, in detail, how it works.

There are several other highlights, but I don't want to spoil any surprises. TechSmith has provided us with 10 licenses to give away to Download Squad readers, so go ahead and watch the video, and then leave a comment to take part in the giveaway!

Continue reading Camtasia 7.1 giveaway and video review

Camtasia 7.1 giveaway and video review originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST.
Popular do-it-all media player VLC has updated to version 1.1.5, and there are a handful of noteworthy changes nestled amongst the bugfixes and security patches. For starters, VLC can now play live streaming video wrapped in Google's WebM video container.

The second big addition can be found on VLC's playlist window. Click the arrow next to Internet in the Media Browser box, and you'll notice Channels.com has been added to the mix. While you won't be able to access the entire vast expanse of shows Channels.com offers, VLC does include more than 1,000 popular offerings.

VLC 1.1.5 also brings one seriously awesome new feature for classic gaming fans: it can now play back a variety of video game audio using the Game Music Emu engine. Yes, you can now play your favorite in-game music from Atari, Famicom, and Sega right alongside your MP3 collection.
Sitting at the top of the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is the most anticlimactic app of all time: YouTube.

After installing and eagerly clicking the icon I was greeted with... m.youtube.com. Yes, the YouTube app is a shortcut to the built-in Web browser. No more, no less... just a shortcut.

I suppose you could say that this is the first smartphone Web app -- but really, it's just laziness. Incidentally, did you know that Windows Phone 7 also lacks a Windows Live Messenger app? Maybe there's a Web-based client that I can use instead..

VidCoder is a nice, little DVD ripper for Windows -- it provides a simple, streamlined interface, supports encoding presets, and uses Hanbrake's processing engine for the heavy lifting. One feature which was notably absent from the last version we covered was support for Blu-Ray discs. That has been added in version 0.7.0, and VidCoder is now better than ever.

One other nice feature VidCoder offers is automatic preview image creation. That's been tweaked as well, and you can now choose to create from 10 to 30 images via the options menu. The built-in previewer has also gotten more responsive (especially when displaying high-def content) thanks to the addition of memory and disk caching.

You'll need the .Net 4.0 framework to run VidCoder -- as well as an app to circumvent that bothersome copy protection on your discs.
EditShare -- the company who acquired non-linear editing superapp Lightworks back in 2009 -- announced a while ago that they would be releasing Lightworks as open source software. That's pretty sweet, considering Lightworks has won both Academy and Emmy awards.

If you've been waiting patiently to get your hands on a download, your wait is almost at an end. According to a letter sent from EditShare to the crew at Openite, Lightworks Open Source will be available on November 29, 2010. Lightworks is truly professional-grade stuff, with features like real-time audio and video effects, multi-track audio and voiceover tools, support for 3D projects, native 2K resolution support, and project sharing for multiple editors. The app has handled editing duties for a laundry list of big-time productions, which you can peruse over at the official site.

Initially, Lightworks will run on Windows XP or newer (both 32 and 64-bit versions). The community hopes to have a Linux port ready to go by late 2011
Professional-grade Lightworks Open Source video editor to be released November 29th originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Both apps now support contact sync between Yahoo Contacts and your smartphone's address book.

Yahoo Messenger for Android finally has built-in support for video calls, a feature that Yahoo has announced a while back but that until now has only made its way into Yahoo's iOS apps. There are caveats though. First, you need to be running Android 2.2 or newer to get the video chat feature. Then, it requires the installation of the Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On to work. And finally, video is only supported on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G and the HTC Evo 4G at the moment -- support for more devices is reportedly in the works. The new Messenger app now also has enhanced photo and video sharing capabilities.

The new Yahoo Mail for Android brings support for multiple accounts and enhanced photo viewing. The app creates a gallery that's automatically populated with all the photos you've received or sent, so you don't have to go to each individual message to find a specific attachment.
Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On are available in the Android Market.
Yahoo Messenger for Android now does video calls, Yahoo Mail for Android updated originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. LoveFilm, the UK's Netflix equivalent, can now stream movies direct to your PlayStation 3, following through on the announcement from a couple of weeks ago. Streaming from the company's 'Watch Online' library is available free but with limited hours on a £5.99 per month package, which excludes games rental, or free and unlimited on a £9.99-or-more per month package. A quick look through LoveFilm's FAQs indicates that, at the moment, it's just free movie streaming, no TV or pay-per-view, and that there are currently over 2000 films available, with more added each week. Movies are streamed in 'near DVD-quality' at 1.6Mbps, not exactly mind blowing, but it's better than nothing. You can pause, rewind and fast-forward a stream, or even resume from a point where you stopped watching, handy if you need to pop to the shops for more popcorn in the middle of the movie.

LoveFilm can be accessed directly from the XMB using a brand new icon that should appear after a power cycle of a UK-based PS3. A free PlayStation Network account is required for streaming, but two PSN accounts can be used to link up two different LoveFilm accounts, while two PS3s can be linked to one LoveFilm account -- perfect if you happen to have a PS3 in the bedroom as well as the lounge.

A free trial is available for those who don't have a LoveFilm account, so there's no reason not to try it out. Fire up your PS3 now if you're in the UK, or head to LoveFilm's PS3 page for more information.
Google has just launched a new Android app -- YouTube Remote -- that turns your phone into the world's most expensive remote control. To use it, simply grab the app from the Android Market, sign into your YouTube (Google) account, and voilá: control of YouTube Leanback either on your PC or Google TV.

Unfortunately, as the app is only available on the American Android Market, I'm unable to test it. From the screenshot, it looks like the interface is fairly simple: you can skip, stop, and pause videos, change the volume, and add new videos to the playlist. I can see this being more useful for Google TV where you're actually some distance from your keyboard -- if you're using Leanback on your PC, it's just a matter of leaning forward to hit the pause button, or skip to the next video.

This is a beta app, incidentally. The official YouTube Android app will almost certainly be updated to contain the same Leanback connectivity in due course. The QR code is after the break.
Continue reading YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone

YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST. BBC Worldwide, the commercial wing of the BBC, has finally got the go-ahead to launch an international version of the video-on-demand iPlayer. It should launch sometime next year.

British audiences have been enjoying the use of iPlayer for years, as one of the perks of their TV license fee, but it remains to be seen how international audiences will pay for the service. Advertising could be used (that's how Channel 4, another British station, does it), or BBC Worldwide might simply charge per episode. You can currently buy episodes of Doctor Who and Top Gear from Apple's iTunes Store for $2.99 -- but some shows, like Sherlock, cost as much as $7.

The Telegraph says that global audiences would "pay up to $10 for an episode of its most popular shows" -- but it doesn't say where that information comes from. You can imagine 90-minute made-for-TV movies coming in at $10 -- but Top Gear? If BBC Worldwide manages to get international audiences to pay $10 per episode of Top Gear it could soon be very, very rich.

BBC iPlayer to go international in 2011, shows could cost up to $10 originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 07:15:00 EST. Ever since Google announced its 'open source' WebM video format, they've been slowly but surely transcoding the entire YouTube video library. According to an update from John Luther, the Product Manager for WebM, while speaking at the Streaming Media West conference, as it stands now, 80% of all video available through YouTube is in the WebM format -- a significant amount of video indeed.

This is good news for proponents of the VP8 video codec and the WebM container, as the more content that's actually available in the format, the more support it's likely to get. On that front, most of the major browsers natively support WebM, with Opera 10, Chrome 6, and Firefox 4 all on board, while third-party codecs are available for use in both Safari and IE. Whether WebM and VP8 will remain free from patent suits, only time will tell -- but Google's certainly full steam ahead.
YouTube finishes transcoding 80% of video catalog to WebM originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 08:30:00 EST. Hulu has announced that it will start making its Hulu Plus subscription service available to anyone who wants to try it, removing the previously existing barrier of needing an invitation to subscribe. Hulu has also revealed that its service is now available on all 2010 Sony Bravia HDTVs, with more Sony connected devices -- including Blu-Ray players -- to get access soon.

Last, but definitely not least, starting next week, all PlayStation 3 owners in the US who have a PlayStation Network account will be able to download and subscribe to Hulu Plus. This availability will coincide with the release of an updated Hulu application for the PS3.

Hulu Plus costs $9.99 per month and, unlike the free, vanilla Hulu, Plus supports HD streaming, can be used on devices other than a computer (iPad and iPhone included), and has more episodes of each show available (whereas the free version is limited to the newest five). It's not because Skyfire violated any of Apple's policies, though -- it's because it was too popular. The browser hit #1 on the App Store's top grossing apps list within five hours of becoming available. The unexpected volume of downloads hammered Skyfire's server capacity and bandwidth, causing the developers to pull it from the store until they can build more capacity. Essentially, the app has sold out.

How can a browser max out its developer's servers? Well, Skyfire's main selling point is that it allows users to watch Flash video by transcoding it and delivering it in an iPhone-friendly format. The server space required to store those videos while Skyfire works this transcoding magic, and the bandwidth required to upload and download the videos, is what's causing the drain on Skyfire's resources. If there was any doubt that a large number of iOS users want Flash video, this goes a long way toward putting it to rest.
Skyfire browser pulled from App Store due to high demand originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:45:00 EST. A couple of weeks ago, AirPlay support for YouTube videos mysteriously disappeared from beta versions of iOS 4.2, the latest update to Apple's mobile OS. That meant users couldn't stream YouTube vids from their iPhones and iPads to their desktops and AppleTVs. With the release of the iOS 4.2 golden master to developers yesterday, though, AirPlay is back in the YouTube app, and it's better than ever.

AirPlay now has its own set of controls in the multitasking bar, just like the iPod app. That means you can control your streaming music and videos without leaving your current game of Angry Birds. Aside from YouTube and iPod, AirPlay also works in Safari and iFiles. Don't be alarmed if you can't stream to your AppleTV yet, though. Apple still needs to release an AppleTV software update, which should come out around the time iOS 4.2 is available to the public.

As Windows Phone 7 nears its North American launch date, big name apps continue to appear in the Zune Marketplace. Today, Netflix announced that its WP7 app is now live and ready to download. As with the Netflix apps for other platforms, the WP7 version is totally free and will allow you to watch streaming content on your device.

In case you're keeping tabs, the Windows Phone 7 app actually arrived before the Android version of Netflix -- which is still "coming soon."

The blog post also notes that Canadian Netflix users can now access the Watch Instantly library on their Xbox 360, which should go nicely with your shiny new dashboard.

Netflix for Windows Phone 7 now available in the Zune Marketplace originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST.
