One evening, a while back, I put a bunch of eggs to boil and went back into my room. Over an hour later, when smoke started seeping in from under the door, I remembered with a start that I completely forgot about the eggs. Bursting out of my room into the smoke-filled apartment, I made my way to the stove and shut it off. Of course, not only were the eggs ruined, but the whole place reeked of ...

When it comes to video chatting options, you've got the app for the tech-savvy (Skype) and the web app for talking to strangers (Charoulette).
But what if you need your privacy, and also don't want to install any desktop software? Gabble is a new web service from HP that tries to fill the void between Skype and Chatroulette.
Gabble has Chatroulette's simple web app setup, but with the ...

The time limit on YouTube videos for regular accounts has been expanded from 10 to 15 minutes, giving amateur directors a little more freedom to post short films. Of course, 15 minutes is also enough time to upload a big segment of a TV show or movie, but it sounds like YouTube now trusts its copy protection enough to give users that power.
To celebrate the extension to 15 minutes, YouTube is ...

If you love data visualization, this one's going to blow your mind: I just found an incredible IBM demo, called World Factbook Dashboard.
It basically takes a ton of demographic and economic data (from the CIA World Factbook, I presume) and presents it in several beautiful ways that (mostly) make instant sense.
This is one of those rare cases where screenshots simply would not do, so I rolled up ...

Most of you have probably embedded a YouTube video at one time or another, even if it's just to share it on Facebook. Because copying and pasting is so easy, you might not have paid much attention to the embed code itself, though. Well, now's a good time to start looking, because YouTube is changing to a shorter, more compatible embed code, using the <iframe> tag.
What does that mean to ...

Like many of the apps in this category, Hamster Free Video Converter utilizes the open source FFmpeg to handle video conversion. Unlike a lot of others, it's got a simple, easy-to-use interface which even the most casual users should be able to manage.
Just follow the tabs! Step 1: choose a video or multiple videos (Hamster does batch conversions, too!). Step 2: select your desired format ...

UltraViolet, with its prehistoric-looking ooh-Web-2.0-reflection!! logo, is about to make a big splash in the world of content distribution. If you thought the days of DRM were behind us, you were wrong. Unless you're using an Apple device, actually -- but more on that in a moment.
Be it music, movies, TV shows or books, UltraViolet has enough clout (some 60 major partners) to significantly ...

With our Web browsers becoming more and more like an OS -- or actually becoming an OS as with Chrome -- it's not surprising to see developers turning their eye toward features which provide a desktop-like experience. Over at Mozilla, they've been working away at TabCandy -- which offers a whole new way to manage your Firefox tabs.
TabCandy is a bit like a full-featured virtual desktop manager ...

Adobe is starting to talk up the upcoming Air 2.5 for Android, which has added so many new features that the FlashMobileBlog says it's now at feature parity with the desktop version of the Flash Platform. If we use heat as a metaphor for access to streaming movies, Canada really IS the frozen north. No access to Hulu and Netflix means a hard life for film-hungry Canadians.
Hulu will have to wait, but Netflix has announced it's launching in Canada this fall. If you're in Canada and you want to be notified when Netflix is available, you can sign up now at netflix.ca. Canada should be getting ...

The list of supporters for Google's open WebM video container continues to expand at a rapid pace -- and while most of the news you've probably read has been centered around web browsers and HTML5 video, desktop media apps are starting to add support.
Apps like AOL's own Winamp, which just announced support for WebM in an official blog post. It may not seem like a very big deal, but Winamp is ...

Remember when I said that iChatr, the iPhone 4 Chatroulette clone, didn't have as many "gross, naked dudes" as the original Chatroulette?
Well, I guess I was wrong, because iChatr has been removed from the App Store due to the behavior of several (gross, naked) users.
It was probably inevitable that Apple -- with its mission to offer app store users "freedom from porn" -- would find ...

Apple's FaceTime video chat, which has been knocked by detractors for only working over Wi-Fi and only on the iPhone, might be coming to many more devices soon. According to Boy Genius Report, an upcoming version of IOS has some code that suggests FaceTime will become available for non-iPhone devices like the iPod Touch and the iPad, using Apple IDs instead of phone numbers.

Hulu Plus wasn't what a lot of users expected: they thought they'd be able pay to watch ad-free TV shows and movies, but ended up being offered a bigger selection and more platforms for a fee, instead. Well, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar says that ad-free Hulu is still a possibility, at a higher price. In response to criticism of the subscription-plus-ads model, where users essentially pay twice, he told ...
