In true Apple style, FaceTime is both a neat reinvention of a previously uninteresting space and a service that comes with certain limitations. So if being constrained to Wi-Fi-only video calling and only if both ends use either an iPhone 4 or the newest iPod Touch are the kinds of things that annoy you and only hinder your use of mobile video chat, rather than make the whole experience user ...

As the name suggests, this is a Linux-only app. You could always use Ubuntu (or similar) under VMware, though, which is what I did to bring you this review! Now on with the show.
FreetuxTV, in essence, is a simple app that plays any TV or radio stream from around the Web. It comes bundled with lots of different channel groups, each one containing channels from a specific country, or ...

At first, I thought that Dragontape had something to do with dragons, but sadly, it doesn't. It's more along the lines of "drag on tape," which means that you get a long, long timeline (or "tape") and you drag YouTube videos onto it.
The goal is to create a playlist, such as this staff pick playlist featuring street music. A playlist can be up to three hours long, which is a tad extreme if you ...

A Twitter for Web video is an interesting concept, but short vids don't seem to catch on the way short text does. 12seconds.tv, probably the best-known quick video service, apparently didn't have much luck making the concept profitable, because they're shutting down on October 22nd. 12seconds says traffic to the service hasn't grown much since it launched 18 months ago. Seesmic tried a similar ...

Google TV is coming -- and judging by the new Google TV website, it's coming soon.
Via the medium of shiny, black, stylish imagery, the site goes a long way to answering any and all questions you might have about the service. For sitting-in-the-living-room TV watchers it sounds really ...

Having just got off the phone with Apple's UK flagship store on London's Regent Street, inquiring about the availability of the new Apple TV in the UK -- an "informed" store representative told us that Apple's waiting to try and secure a deal with LoveFilm before releasing stock. She said that Apple's newest media box should be available sometime next week.
What with Netflix streaming ...

While the TechCrunch deal is the most exciting news I've heard from AOL today, it's not the only major deal to go down: This morning AOL announced its purchase of 5min Media, a massive video syndication company.
When you go to the 5min homepage, it looks a bit like a mini-YouTube; that's not the exciting part. What's noteworthy about 5min is that they manually curate all of their content (over ...

YTTM apparently stands for "YouTube Time Machine," although that's not specifically mentioned on the site. What it does is very easy to understand, though. You move a slider to a specific year between 1860 and 2010, and you get a bunch of YouTube videos related to that year. Yes, I said 1860 (that's not a typo).
Not all hits are spot-on, though. When I chose 1972, I got a video from 1970. So, I ...

As a Canadian living about 600 miles from the nearest metropolitan center, this is huge news: Netflix has opened its doors in Canada. The service is streaming-only -- no rentals by mail as in the U.S. -- but I'll take it.
For $7.99 a month, Canadians can watch all the TV shows and movies they want via their Wii, PS3, or PC -- Xbox 360 support is coming soon. Better still, your first month of ...

At a rather awesome price of $149 (or $119 after mail-in rebate!!!), the latest cut-down versions of Photoshop and Premiere are now available for both Windows and Mac as a bundle. Individually, each app costs $99.
Photoshop Elements 9 is adapted from Photoshop CS5, and it features the delicious 'Content Aware' Fill and Spot Healing that photographers the world over have no doubt been waiting ...

Microsoft has announced a new expansion for Zune services. The news is a touch bittersweet for me, since it didn't involve the arrival of Zune Pass in Canada. Maybe next time...
Those of you who live in the U.K., France, Italy, and Spain, however, can now enjoy the Zune Pass music subscription service for £8.99 or 9.99 Euros per month. That's only a tad pricier than the $14.99 U.S. ...

VLC lovers, rejoice! Well, VLC lovers who own an iPad, anyway. Applidium has announced that VLC for iPad has been approved and is now available for download from the App Store.
In case you were wondering about the open source implications of the release, good news on that front: Applidium states that the code will be released before the end of the day. The blog also states that they've begun ...

Google is working on improving the quality of its video chats, adding a new opt-in feature to Gmail Labs. To get higher resolution video and a bigger video window in your chats, go to labs and enable "video chat enhancements." Google has apparently found a way to enable widescreen mode and pump up the video quality without causing a huge drain on your system resources, which is important in a ...

If there's one thing that users outside the U.S. find irritating about online video, it's the fact that we don't have access to many of the awesome services that our American chums do. Sony has struck a minor blow against geotarding today, however, with the expansion of Crackle.
Canadians can now enjoy Crackle's Sony-powered content as well. Most of it, anyway -- I'm not able to watch most ...

From the oh dear Lord, it's about time department: YouTube, over the next two days, is conducting a trial of its new live streaming platform.
This first test will see live content streamed by four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks (Barely Political), Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. Admittedly I haven't heard of any of them -- and I'm more interested in watching the season finale of ...
