This update, while not a major one, isn't all about fixing bugs either. Some important -- and previously missing -- functionality is now built in.

TweetDeck for Android now has support for landscape mode for all update detail views, and gets support for TwitPic and manual URL shortening through Bit.ly. Users can now delete direct messages that they have received, straight from within the app. It now supports Facebook's recently unveiled Single Sign-on. And alongside the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, old style retweets are now a go for protected users, favoriting tweets is now fixed on 3G in France, dismissing Places notifications is now possible, and Facebook likes and comments should stay in app.

TweetDeck for Android 1.0.3 is available in the Android Market for owners of devices running Android 1.6 and newer.
Today's update to the Facebook beta app brings Places support to Pre and Pixi owners.

To check in, simply tap the menu button in the app's top-right corner and then tap the Places icon. Nearby locations will be displayed, and you can then tap Check In to post your location to Facebook.

Places support is only available in the beta app right now, so here's hoping the new version gets rolled to all webOS Facebook users soon. It's a big improvement and has a lot of nice additional functionality.
Zynga, the maker of FarmVille, is going to launch a new game on the Facebook platform in the coming weeks -- CityVille. Like its name implies, this will be a cross between FarmVille and SimCity, allowing players to create a city from scratch, building roads, homes, schools, parks, and so on. Buildings are 3D, which is a first for a Zynga game. Money will be made by trading with other cities and collecting rent. Of course you'll also be able to use Facebook credits to purchase in-game currency.

"One of the goals when developing CityVille is to make it Zynga's most social game ever," according to Sean Kelly, Zynga's CityVille General Manager. The game has more social interactions than any other game in Zynga's portfolio -- for example, you'll be able to open up businesses in friends' cities. Kelly also said that "the goal of the game is to design a city of your dreams from the ground up and connect with your friends".

CityVille will become available on Facebook in the next weeks -- though initially only in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German.
Known by the end-user as the rather demure 'Messages', and internally as Project Titan, it is only those that look toward the future that know its true name: Skynet.

The future can be defined as a flow of time that has the potential to become anything. With an almost-infinite number of possibilities, it's no surprise that we occasionally get dizzily lost in our thoughts of the future. It's also no surprise that most of our life is about making choices, for it is the only way we can control our future. Should I get out of bed? What should I make for lunch? Who will I meet today? Should I ask her out? These are all choices, all decisions that irrevocably alter the future.

Unless we choose for something to happen -- unless we cause an event to occur -- everything else happens to us. When you lose the power of choice, you lose the power to affect your future. You are no longer you -- instead, you are the punching bag of the universe.

Which brings us back to Facebook. We are rapidly approaching a point in time -- a technological singularity -- where Facebook knows enough about you, me and all of mankind that it can make better choices than us.

Continue reading Facebook -- with or without Google -- will destroy the world as we know it

Facebook -- with or without Google -- will destroy the world as we know it originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. Yahoo! Messenger remains one of the most popular desktop IM clients around, and its users are now able to get a taste of what's coming in version 11. Like its biggest competition -- Windows Live Messenger -- Y! Messenger 11 is about creating a more current, social messaging app.

One of the biggest additions is Facebook chat support -- which works nicely, though former Squadder Brad Linder noted that Meebo thought I was offline. Twitter support has been added, and Messenger 11 also offers write-once-post-everywhere updates to Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo! Pulse. More social gaming options have been added, and will soon include Zynga's Mafia Wars and Fishville. Yahoo! Messenger 11 also allows multiple sign-ins, so you won't get disconnected from your desktop if you sign in on your mobile device. Windows 7 users can change status, send messages, and sign in and out via Messenger 11's jump list.

In his announcement, Yahoo's John Dunning also has some good news for Android users. Yahoo! Messenger for Android will be updated soon with better video chat support. Currently, only users with an EVO or MyTouch 4G can utilize the feature, but additional handset support is on the way.
You can now rate places and write reviews from your phone. This is made easy by a rating widget that you can add to your homescreen. You can also rate and review places straight from any Place page -- these are in the process of being rolled out into Google mobile search results for Android and iPhone in the US.

Your ratings will personalize your search results by making them match your tastes more. If you've added friends using Hotpot on a computer, they will get recommendations of the places you like, and you will get recommendation of the places they like.

Google has promised that a Places app for the iPhone is on the way, complete with Hotpot support.
Google Hotpot is new a social place recommendation engine built on Google's existing Place pages. Up until now, Places have been rated and reviewed based on outside sources like Yelp, but Hotpot lets users rate local establishments using their Google Profiles. After you've entered a few ratings, Hotpot will use your tastes to recommend other places you might like, sort of like a Netflix for restaurants.

You can also add friends on Hotpot (again, via their Google Profiles). Adding friends is easy, as Hotpot can find friends through your Gmail address book. Once you've added friends, their ratings will get a little extra weight in recommending places for you.

As for the site itself, Hotpot has a pretty slick grid-based UI, with each place in a box featuring a photo and a star rating. Up top, you've got counters tallying your ratings and reviews. You can quickly access your history, your previously rated places, or your friends' recent ratings from a sidebar. The whole thing is quite user-friendly, and oriented toward browsing versus searching, which makes it ideal for finding somewhere to go out to dinner.

Since it doesn't require existing Google users to sign up or add a whole new bunch of contacts, Hotpot actually has a decent chance of catching on, and it certainly makes Google's Place pages more fun and useful.

Google launches Hotpot for social place recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST. It's more like instant messaging than email -- more like a conversation than a threaded email conversation. Yes, every communication that goes through the Facebook messaging platform will create a conversation history. Much like Google Wave, actually.

The idea is that you will push every digital communication through Facebook, and thus everything can be logged -- every message has a context. If you email and SMS your significant other, both those messages will appear in order, in the conversation history.

Facebook has invested in lots of shiny new infrastructure that builds upon their existing technologies -- they're ready for the swell of traffic that the <strike>email</strike> instant messaging will generate. Lots of protocols are supported, too, like XMPP and Jabber -- and IMAP support is planned.

The 'social inbox' feature sounds a lot like a hyper-intelligent 'Priority Inbox' system. By default, email (or any communication) from your friends or friends-of-friends will appear at the top of your inbox, followed by everyone else. You can also automatically bounce anyone that isn't a friend; awesome! You can of course make it so non-Facebook friends appear at the top of your inbox too.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO, closed with (roughly) these words. "This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it. We don't want people to shut down their Yahoo or Gmail account. People are shifting towards more and more simple communication -- if we do a good job, we think more people will engage in IM [on Facebook's new platform]. If we do a good job at that, maybe one day, two years out, people will say that instant messaging, not email, is the way forward."

Update:

There's no content filtering (no rules)

Incoming mail from people that don't use Facebook will automatically hit your normal, 'non-priority' inbox

You can move friends down the priority list, and move 'external' non-Facebook friends up

Message forwarding will be possible

Unlimited storage! Or at least, no explicit cap on how much data you can store

There's a video after the break that demonstrates the new Messages product

Extolling the virtues of what messaging should be -- seamless, instant, personal and simple -- Mark Zuckerberg has just launched what sounds just like a socially-aware version of the now-defunct Google Wave.

It is not email -- though you will get a username@facebook.com email address -- but it handles email. It's a messaging platform that interweaves all of your incoming messages, be they SMSes, emails or instant messages into one big dashboard.

The most exciting prospect is the idea of a 'social inbox', which is basically an automatic email whitelist. Instead of being forced to hand-create lists of 'favourite' friends that skip your spam filters, Facebook's new messaging platform will automatically filter mail from your Facebook friends, your friends-of-friends, and so on.
Installing apps is so easy! Search, click, blam. In moments I was booting up Twitter, its comforting, peaceful blue emanating from the phone's bright screen.

You're greeted with a 'top tweets' (lower-case is obviously still in), 'trends,' 'suggested,' and 'nearby' panorama. You don't have to log in to use this section, which is nice, as a lot of people use Twitter for the newsy aspect, rather than actually tweeting.

That's where the good news ends.

Twitter for WP7 is slow. Sliding between pages is spluttery and nowhere near as smooth as the main WP7 menus. Scrolling down through tweets is worse; the frame rate drops just enough to create a bit of a 'blinking' effect that will probably cause epileptic seizures amongst sensitive users.

Unfortunately... it gets worse.
Continue reading Twitter for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, thoroughly unexciting

Twitter for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, thoroughly unexciting originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Using the consummate magic of Facebook Connect (or Windows Live ID), users of Microsoft's game portals can now stay in touch with their friends while they play Bejeweled thanks to a 'casual games hub.'

From what I can see, this games hub takes the form of a 'dashboard' that wraps around each of the games, whether you play them on MSN Games, Bing or Live Messenger. Take a look at the screenshot above -- it's the only real way to explain how it works. You can now challenge your friends to games or see their high scores while you game. You can also see your News Feed -- pretty convenient if you're not the type that keeps Facebook open in a tab 24/7.

To accommodate all of these changes MSN Games has been completely overhauled. It's now rather beautiful! (Does anyone remember how it used to look back when it was called 'Zone'? Those were the days...) Oh, there's also a 30-second unskippable pre-roll video commercial before you can play each game -- is that new?

Live Messenger has also been updated, according to the screenshots at LiveSide. No one at Download Squad is seeing the changes yet, however -- but perhaps the patch will come tonight!
Microsoft launches new casual games hub that connects MSN, Bing and Live originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. That's where Meebo comes in with its soon to be released MiniBar. While it's not the first to bring check-ins to websites -- both Badgeville and OneTrueFan already do that -- Meebo has a significant amount of clout within the in-website add-on bar business with its popular Meebo Bar.

The MiniBar will let you check-in to your favorite websites as you visit them, optionally attaching individual pages and comments as you see fit. You can also share your check-ins on Twitter or Facebook, should you so wish, but Meebo will include a "friends feed" that'll show you what your friends have been visiting and sharing. There is, however, no game mechanic like that of Foursquare; the aim of the MiniBar is purely the discovery and sharing of websites, which is something that Twitter is currently used for. The MiniBar itself is a Meebo.com-served solution. It's essentially an extension that doesn't install any software on your system. As a consequence, the MiniBar will be available to Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer users in much the same way that the Meebo Bar is. The similarities don't stop there either -- the MiniBar also has chat features and other functions that are available on the Meebo Bar. Meebo's also rolling out "Profile pages," which will keep track of your check-ins and those of your friends, similar to most other profile systems in other social networks.

The extension is due to go live Tuesday for your check-in pleasure, with the MiniBar functionality eventually ending up in the main Meebo Bar once all the kinks have been worked out.
Meebo gets into the website "check-in" game with the MiniBar originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Users of the Facebook app for iOS can now access their privacy settings without firing up Safari. Following the update to version 3.2, you can tap the account button on the app's main screen to jump to Facebook's controls. The update also adds two-tap access to your Facebook profile settings and the Help Center -- also via the Web. As AppAdvice points out, native controls would have been a nicer addition, but at least the screens can be accessed without leaving the app now.
In fact, it's hard to name more than two apps that I use on a daily basis: Angry Birds is the first, of course, and BeejiveIM is the second.

I reviewed BeejiveIM for Android last month and came away with the conclusion that it's almost faultless. The interface is smooth, and you can customize colors and backgrounds to your heart's content. Integration to multiple networks is seamless, with the ability to send both audio and photo to any and all contacts. In fact, the only real fault is its price: at $9.99 it's not the cheapest app out there -- but imagine the money you would save by instant messaging from your phone instead of drinking coffee and reading a newspaper! Your friends and family would love you more, too -- can you put a price on that?

Then again, why fret about paying for software when you can get it for free... by entering this giveaway!

We have 10 BeejiveIM for Android licenses to give away -- just leave a comment and you'll be entered into the prize draw. Things are relatively quiet this morning in the blogosphere, with the except of rumblings about Facebook possibly launching their own webmail app to compete with the likes of Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Gmail. In reality, it's probably not so much about competition as it is with getting Facebook users to spend as much time on the site as possible -- adding to Facebook's glut of delicious, highly-targetable-by-advertisers data.

Like any good, up-to-date, Web-based email, Facebook's offering is said to offer integrated document editing and viewing, courtesy Microsoft's Office Web Apps (OWA). When Docs.com launched in beta, of course, the only way to get in on the action was to sign up via Facebook. It certainly stands to reason, then, that Facebook's rumored webmail app would feature tight integration with OWA. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley cites a Facebook source as saying "The Office Team has been working on this for quite a while now."

We'll keep you posted as events unfold, but if the invite-only launch of Facebook Mail does happen today you'll have to be living under a rock to avoid hearing about it.
Facebook Mail and Office Web Apps combo to go head-to-head with Google? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST.
This morning, TechCrunch speculates that Facebook is going to launch a "Gmail killer" this coming Monday. Facebook has sent out invites to an event in San Francisco where they will supposedly announce it. Its working title is Project Titan, but it will probably change into something much more friendly for mass-consumption (let's just hope they don't call it "FaceMail" or something horrible like that).

Facebook already has a treasure trove of personal information and a huge messaging platform. If they throw email into the mix, this may become a real threat to Gmail. It would also make Facebook even "stickier" than it is - or provide people like me with one more reason to keep their distance from the privacy-invading behemoth.

[It's at times like these that I feel compelled to remind everyone that Hotmail and Yahoo both have more users than Gmail. A "Hotmail killer" would be far more impressive. -Ed]

Facebook to launch alleged "Gmail killer" on Monday? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 05:10:00 EST. The module can be seen on the right side of the Top News, My News and Upcoming pages on Digg. Right now it shows five stories at a time, with one of them being highlighted as a Hot Story. The new section will also allow Digg to aggregate stories on a particular topic.

Unlike the rest of Digg, where users control the stories' performance by casting their votes to either 'digg' or 'bury' them, the Breaking News section will be curated by Digg staff, in an effort to showcase important news as quickly as possible.
Both apps now support contact sync between Yahoo Contacts and your smartphone's address book.

Yahoo Messenger for Android finally has built-in support for video calls, a feature that Yahoo has announced a while back but that until now has only made its way into Yahoo's iOS apps. There are caveats though. First, you need to be running Android 2.2 or newer to get the video chat feature. Then, it requires the installation of the Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On to work. And finally, video is only supported on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G and the HTC Evo 4G at the moment -- support for more devices is reportedly in the works. The new Messenger app now also has enhanced photo and video sharing capabilities.

The new Yahoo Mail for Android brings support for multiple accounts and enhanced photo viewing. The app creates a gallery that's automatically populated with all the photos you've received or sent, so you don't have to go to each individual message to find a specific attachment.
Flickr, like all social networks, can be gamed. Yes, you can simply upload photos to share them with friends and family, but for many users -- the Flickrites -- there's a whole lot more to it than that. For the elite few -- the Flickr version of 'social media experts' -- it's all about garnering exposure, and thus accruing views and comments. Ultimately, I guess there are dreams and delusions of grandeur, and surely some people manage to make money out of the whole process -- but just like every other Internet dream, I'm sure the most people fail and fade into obscurity.

One of the oldest rules of Flickr is not to flood your stream with new images. If you upload five photos, you automatically bump four photos from the top of your stream, most-visible spot. It's like publishing five blog posts, or spamming a bunch of tweets! Your contacts have also probably enabled the 'show only one photo' option, so if they're browsing recent uploads, they'll only see one photo anyway. It's much better to upload one photo each day, for five days -- and that's where Flickr Schedulr comes in!

With Schedulr, you create upload batches, and then decide on when and how often you want images to be uploaded -- but one a day is the default, for good reason.
Continue reading Flickr Schedulr lets you create an automated queue of uploads to Flickr

Flickr Schedulr lets you create an automated queue of uploads to Flickr originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST. The updated apps are set to go live today in the iTunes App Store and the Android Market.

The mobile apps now have the complete functionality of the Web-based Tumblr Dashboard built in. The new Dashboard seamlessly presents users with photos, galleries, links, audio and video content, making browsing through the Dashboard a very enjoyable experience.

Tumblr's native features, such as reblogging, answering posts or replying, are all included as well. As are speed improvements that make the apps faster than ever to load and use.

These updates will make their way into Tumblr's BlackBerry app in the future.
