As fast as Google Docs has been growing, many people are still unwilling to abandon their desktop office software and take to the cloud. Well, Google just made it easier with Cloud Connect, a new Microsoft Office plug-in that connects Word, PowerPoint and Excel to Google Docs. That means anything you do in Office will be saved in the cloud using your Google Docs account.

Cloud Connect actually works where Microsoft's online collaboration software doesn't (yet). For example, Cloud Connect works across different versions of Office, and includes Excel support. Also, anyone who's shared files using Google Docs knows how easy it is compared to setting up SharePoint.

Instead of forcing the switch to Google's own Web apps, Google is letting businesses have their Office and share it too. Sounds like a solid strategy to convince Office users that Google is the way to go for online collaboration, before Microsoft can even finish getting its cloud services off the ground.

Right now, a preview of Cloud Connect is only available via limited signup to Google Apps for Business customers, but it will be available for everyone -- individual users included -- when it launches.
Google Cloud Connect plug-in connects Microsoft Office to your Google Docs originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog. Have a flick through the gallery below if you want to explore the Android app.

The bods over at MacTech have been putting the Microsoft Business Unit's latest Mac offering, Office 2011, though its metaphorical paces, and have found that, on the whole, it's significantly faster than its previous siblings Office 2008 and 2004. App launches are around 70% faster from cold and 98% faster on relaunch, a noticeable and welcome improvement for the user. That's not all, common tasks in the big four applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, have also been streamlined giving an average speed up of between 36 and 129%.

The usual disclaimer is in force here -- measured by a stop watch, might not be accurate, etc -- but MacTech was adamant that on the face of it, the whole Office suite for Mac has seen real-world speed improvements that directly affect the user, something to which we can personally attest. Impressive stuff indeed, and when combined with ditching Entourage for Outlook, Office 2011 makes a worthy upgrade.

Microsoft's workplace collaboration tool, Office Communications Server, just got a big upgrade and a new, less stuffy name: Microsoft Lync 2010. Like OCS, Lync connects the various Microsoft services in a workplace, including Office, Exchange email and Sharepoint storage. It's also a hub for instant messenging, voice calls and video calls.

The major new stuff in Lync 2010 includes enterprise voice calling that's compatible with various USB and IP devices, and could theoretically do the job of your office's legacy phone system. Contact lists are now unified across your Microsoft applications, so you can use your contacts in both Lync and your office apps. Lync also includes new conferencing features, like desktop and app sharing (including PowerPoint sharing and whiteboarding).

The last big Microsoft OCS release was back in 2007, although it got a service pack last year. Lync 2010 represents a huge leap forward in functionality that looks like it actually belongs in a 2010 office environment. There's an insane amount of info on new features, including several demo videos, at the Microsoft Lync 2010 launch page.

Microsoft Lync 2010 replaces Microsoft Office Communications Server for workplace collaboration originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 20:30:00 EST. This feature will only be accessible for owners of devices running Android 2.2 or newer and iOS 3.0 or newer (including the iPad). In the meantime, though, downloading the new Evernote 3.4 also adds features you can use before iOS 4.2 comes out.

Perhaps the most useful new feature is multi-image select. Rather than importing one photo at a time into Evernote, you can now select up to five at once, either all in one note or spread out across separate ones. You'll find this new feature in the "Send To" menu item in your iPhone's camera roll. Location services for Evernote need to be turned on to enable multi-image select.

Audio note users will also be happy to hear that notes can now be as long as 90 minutes each, long enough to deal with most meetings, class notes, and interviews. Evernote also gets its own audio player with easy navigation, rather than opening Quicktime to play back notes. It even has play-pause buttons in the application dock, just like the ones Apple's iPod app uses.

All in all, this is a significant feature update that's worth downloading even before iOS 4.2 is released.

Evernote for iPhone and iPad updated with multi-photo select and 90 minute audio notes originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST.
There are many, many extensions currently available for Google Chrome in the Chrome Extension Gallery -- over 8,000 in fact -- from both third-party developers and from Google themselves. Yesterday, Google announced the addition of official Chrome extensions for Google Calendar, Docs, and YouTube.

The Google Calendar extension adds quick access to your upcoming events and lets you add new events directly from websites like Facebook. A green plus sign will pop up indicating that it's found an event, allowing you to quickly insert it into your Calendar with location information if it's detected.

Google Docs gets a Web Clipboard extension that allows you to copy and paste text and images to and from the Google Docs online clipboard, for use across multiple browser windows. Handy if you're a heavy Docs user, as Matthew mentioned in his previous coverage.

Last but not least, Google's got a YouTube Feed extension that keeps an eye on your favorite videos and notifies you when new videos are available in your YouTube homepage feed. It also brings the social elements of ratings, likes and uploads from your friends to Chrome with direct access straight from the extension. Great for avid YouTube users.

These official Chrome extensions and many more are available, of course, from the Chrome Extensions Gallery.
Google Chrome gets official Google Calendar, Docs, and YouTube extensions originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST. For $24.99, it will let you share your Android device's data connection with your computer via USB. Unlike Google's free Android tethering app, Tether works on Android 1.5 and up (the built-in app started with Android 2.2).

Now, to readers outside the US, Tether may sound like a ripoff. American cell carriers are notorious for blocking tethering and charging huge fees to enable it. Witness AT&T's $25/month fee for tethering on the iPhone. Now Tether's one-time pricetag of $25 doesn't sound so high, especially when the carriers can't arbitrarily disable it, they way they can with Google's native tethering app.

If Tether sounds good to you, but you want to try before you buy, there's a free one-week demo. Also, if you see the $49.99 price anywhere on the Tether site, that's a mistake: the Blackberry version, which also includes tethering via Wi-Fi, is $49.99. The price for the Android version will show up as $24.99 when you add it to your cart.

WorkFlowy is deceptively simple. It's just an outliner - a list-maker! You click on a new line, write whatever you have to write, and hit Enter. Done - you now have a bullet, a "to-do item," or whatever you want to call it. Hit Shift+Enter, and you can add some text as a note for that item.

There is nothing revolutionary about it, except for one key difference: it lets you drill into items. By "drilling in," I mean that you can click the bullet next to an item (or press Ctrl+right arrow), and you're then transported "into" the item. You no longer see the whole list - the item you've selected becomes the "master item," and it looks like it's the top of the hierarchy.

This simple difference makes it possible to forget that you have a huge list of other items. It makes it possible to use Workflowy for managing a whole bunch of disparate projects, thoughts, and whatnot. Workflowy was intentionally kept simple -- there are no "tags." You can't send links to specific items. There are no collaboration features. It's a very single-minded tool, and it just works.

I've promised you Matt Cutts in the title, so here's what Mr. Cutts had to say about it, according to WorkFlowy's homepage:

"Workflowy has become one of three tabs that I keep open in my browser, along with Gmail and Google Calendar."

That's a powerful endorsement if I've ever seen one. There's also a short video about Workflowy after the jump.

Continue reading WorkFlowy is a lightweight outliner endorsed by Matt Cutts

WorkFlowy is a lightweight outliner endorsed by Matt Cutts originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:30:00 EST.

Evernote has announced that it has reached an important milestone, just passing 5 million users. Also, the latest million users were added in only 83 days, whereas the first million were gathered in a whopping 446 days. As you can see from the graph above, each subsequent million has been added in shorter and shorter periods of time.

Evernote has also broken some more records in recent days, starting with the 22,130 users that signed up today and made it cross the 5 million mark. It's also seen the most ever Windows, Android and BlackBerry users in one day and the highest daily revenue from Evernote Premium subscriptions.

Do keep in mind though that the user numbers probably refer to all the users that have ever signed up for an Evernote account and not the number of people actively using the service every day. Still, all of these are nice accomplishments and things to be expected of a successful startup such as Evernote.

Evernote passes 5 million users originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 19:30:00 EST.
pleasnotify.me is a fairly straightforward Web app: You fill in a quick form with the recipient's address, a task, a due date, and your address.

The email is sent out, and the recipient is supposed to reply by the time the task is done. On the surface, all is well and fine. I mean, it's not the most original application in the history of the universe, but it's okay.

But when you stop and think about it for a minute, it's an incredible way to spam and harass random people. The application basically provides you with a free, open email gateway, which lets you email anyone, anywhere, without verifying your identity in any way. It doesn't even use a CAPTCHA prompt to make sure you're human. In other words, this thing is just waiting for a spam bot to give it (and hapless email users) some abuse.

Adding CAPTCHA would help, sure. But what would really help would be authenticating users, and doing the whole thing over email in the first place. Do that, and you find yourself with Followup.cc which is how this sort of thing should be done in the first place.

Still, it's a nice try, and hopefully could at least be made a tad more secure.

pleasnotify.me lets you quickly assign tasks over email, spam random people originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST.
We all have email. We have too much email, actually. And it stays in the inbox and just piles up, gathering dust, cobwebs and guilt. There are tons of services, systems, and lifehacks to try help us get rid of some of that overload, or at least handle it a tad better.

0Boxer is another such attempt, but it's a particularly graceful one. It comes as a Firefox or Chrome extension that hooks onto Gmail and rewards you every time you do something to handle your email. You get points for replying to messages, for archiving them, and even for composing new messages -- though that last bit seems a tad counter-intuitive. I thought the idea was having less email, not more.

Still, the concept is very cool. You also get "badges" when you perform particularly impressive feats, such as archiving your first message (I'm a big boy now!).

Since this is 2010, everything must be social - and 0Boxer doesn't disappoint. You can use it to find your friends who are also playing the game, and supposedly compete with them. I haven't tried this (you need to have friends for this to work), but it's definitely intriguing. All in all, it does add a bit of interest and fun when replying to scads of messages!

When you think about it, a calendar is basically a to-do list with dates. Sure, we're used to looking at it in a certain format - all of those little squares, one per day. But coolendar takes the concept of a calendar and strips it from that familiar representation, leaving just a neat, carefully dated to-do list in its wake.

Visually, it's very cool. It's got that iPhone-app aesthetic that seems to be the new Web 2.0 look. All the buttons are rounded, the whole thing is colored in lovely pastels, and when you hover over a button, you get a funky "zoom in" effect.

A part of coolendar's claim to fame is its ability to parse natural language. So you can write "9PM Sunday, do something," and it correctly guesses that you mean next Sunday. However, this is something that Google Calendar already does, and I believe it does it a bit better than coolendar. For instance, coolendar had trouble with a perfectly clear request such as "Sunday in two weeks, do something." It's also lacking any sort of support for recurring events.

In short, the nicest thing about this app is the UI and the visual appeal. In terms of functionality, both Google Calendar and Remember The Milk have it squarely beat, at least for now.

Coolendar is a slick natural language online calendar originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST.
Let's say you've browsed somewhere you shouldn't have, or at a time when it was inappropriate. And maybe you've even forgotten to turn on the private browsing mode. Tsk tsk tsk! But the deed is done; now what?

If you just go ahead and hit Ctrl+Shift+Del in Firefox, you will be able to delete all traces of your browsing from the past several hours, from today, or even the entire history. But that's not very subtle, is it? Anyone auditing your browser history might notice a large, gaping hole in the records and start wondering.

What if you could delete only those traces you didn't want seen, leaving the rest undisturbed? That would be far more difficult to track down. But going over your entire browsing history and hunting those errant URLs one by one is tedious, not to mention error prone.

History Deleter is a Firefox add-on aimed at automating this entire process. It utilizes a complex rule-based system that allows you to delete URLs (or page titles) containing certain keywords, which have been visited more than once or browsed a certain number of days ago. You can also have it automatically run upon exiting Firefox, or when the history exceeds a certain number of entries.

Clearly, this has uses other than hiding illicit browsing; Firefox's extensive history is used by the Awesome Bar to yield useful browsing suggestions, but the browser can easily become slow when burdened with too many entries. History Deleter can help you make Firefox a bit leaner, while still enjoying the Awesome Bar and other history-related features.

History Deleter for Firefox lets you selectively purge browsing history originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. Obviously, like before, the app will allow you to take notes, photos, record audio, and access all your Evernote data. But it does bring many improvements and feature additions. In fact, Evernote says this is the single biggest leap in functionality any Evernote app has ever received in one release.

Evernote 2.0 for Android has a redesigned Home screen (as seen in the screenshot to the right). A search magnifying glass is now at the top of every screen inside the app (except the Home screen) so you can easily start a search no matter what you are doing. The improved Search function also lets you look for things near you based on your location and provides quick access to both previous and saved searches.

New views and more options have become available when viewing a note. Sorting and browsing have been made easier. Sorting now works offline and you can group your notes by notebook, location, or month. If you tap and hold a note in a note list you get a menu that has options such as Edit, Delete, get Note info, Email, Map view, Tagging. A header bar has also been added to make it simple to switch among searches, notes, tags, and notebooks.
Basically, if your BlackBerry runs BlackBerry OS 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 5.0 or 6.0 and you have access to BlackBerry App World, the Evernote app is now available for you, no matter where you are. Caching each page individually takes several clicks, and some sites don't offer a single-page view of their articles. If you're using Safari 5, you can get around this problem with Safari Reader. When you activate Safari Reader, you'll get a highly readable text-only view that usually includes the entire article, all on one page.

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the Safari Reader version of your article, and then use your favorite bookmarklet or extension to send it to Instapaper, you'll save the whole thing. It's a brilliant way to avoid clicking save five times in one short article.

We tested this trick with Readability, the bookmarklet upon which Safari Reader was based, and it works the same way. If you're not using Safari, you can grab the Readability bookmarklet (or the Chrome extension) and take advantage of the same Instapaper trick. Take note, though, you'll have to save to Instapaper using Instapaper's own "Read Later" bookmarklet. The trick doesn't work with Instachrome (the Instapaper Chrome extension).

"Remember Mom's birthday," says the bland email from Google Calendar. Sometimes that's enough, really -- but other times, you may want to add a bit of pizzazz to make things more interesting... Especially if you're sending that scheduled reminder to someone other than yourself.

Alertful is a simple, well-designed email alert service. It works kind of like e-cards: there are tailor-made reminders for all sorts of specific occasions, such as a birthday, a meeting reminder, a holiday reminder, a "pet to the vet" reminder, and even a "money reminder." It's British, so there's an "MOT renewal reminder," too (that's Ministry of Transport, I believe). Each reminder has a little tie-wearing dude with a speech bubble, telling you something like "Remember, your MOT is about to expire on...." Here's a sample.

When you set a reminder, you have to fill in a short form with the date, the email you wish to send the reminder to, the frequency (one off, or how often the reminder should be sent), and some other details. I only wish they had custom forms for the different reminders - they all seem to contain the same set of questions. All in all, Alertful is a neat little service.

Alertful lets you schedule cute, lively email reminders originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST.
Blekko, despite how it sounds, is a search engine -- not a euphemism for vomit.

It's a search engine that, in its quest to go up against bigger opponents like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, has tried to set itself apart by lumping operators into "slashtags," calling itself "social," and touting how "open" and "transparent" its search results are. It also tries to put an overwhelmingly positive spin on human bias playing a huge role in search rankings. Blekko hopes to attract not just disillusioned power-users, but everyday users as well -- and from what I've seen, that doesn't seem very likely.

For starters, if you share the aversion to the three-letter acronym SEO that many users of social media tend to have these days, this search engine is not for you. If you like to get your search results very quickly, then this search engine probably isn't for you. If you like your search engine to be intuitive, and furthermore, to get decent results with a minimum amount of finagling, then I have to say that Blekko is not the search engine for you.

I spent a couple of solid hours using Blekko in a vain attempt to find a reason for all the hype. After all, The New York Times went as far as to call Blekko "A New Search Engine, Where Less Is More," and our own AOL compatriot Michael Arrington gave it plenty of positive attention at TechCrunch. I was actually hoping that there might be some worth to the plucky little upstart -- but instead I found a bloated, buggy search engine with largely worthless, extremely inaccurate results, regardless of what slashtag I used to "vertically narrow" my search.

Continue reading Blekko, the "Slashtag" search engine is slow, cumbersome, and just plain broken

Blekko, the "Slashtag" search engine is slow, cumbersome, and just plain broken originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST.
Google's newest official Chrome extension is sure to get a lot of use in the coming months. Assuming you've got extension-syncing enabled in a capable version of the browser, Web Clipboard brings a fully synced clipboard to Chrome, and it's pretty nice for an initial -- though somewhat buggy -- release. It copies both plain text and HTML within any Chrome tab, and secures the data on Google servers. Each item copied remains saved for 30 days, or until you clear the clipboard contents through the extension's drop-down menu.

The extension just released today, but Google warns of two major known issues: Gmail isn't yet supported, and neither are pages which contain frames. I've also run into a spot of trouble in getting items copied with the extension to paste inside Google Docs.

On the bright side, text copied using Docs' built-in clipboard will be instantly available in the extension for pasting elsewhere. Last but not least, the extension is currently only able to paste inside form elements. Despite these early obstacles, this is probably one of the more useful extensions in the gallery for people who use more than one computer. Since this is an official Google extension, I would think the bugs will get worked out fairly quickly.

One thing I'm hoping for in subsequent updates is for the extension to work inside the Omnibar, which could make quickly copying a URL and switching computers a much smoother process than it is today. One thing's for certain, Chrome OS was definitely on the minds of Google's extension team when they cooked this one up.
