If you're a blogger, a designer, or just someone who uses a lot of images from Flickr, you might want to check out ViewFinder. ViewFinder is a Mac app that offers speedy searches of Flickr, using tags, titles and descriptions. It even lets you limit your search to Creative Commons-licensed images, and automatically generates attributions for you, so you can properly credit the work you download.

Viewfinder also has Keynote integration (for Keynote '08 and above), for folks who like to use Flickr photos in their presentation slides. You can drop Flickr photos right into Keynote with no mess, instead of downloading and opening the files and trashing them when you're done.

Viewfinder carries a
£15 introductory price -- that's roughly 25 US dollars -- but it could easily be worth the cost for people whose workflows depend heavily on Flickr. If you want to test it out, the free demo has no time limit, but it only allows 2 downloads per launch, and it delays each download by 30 seconds.
Flickr, like all social networks, can be gamed. Yes, you can simply upload photos to share them with friends and family, but for many users -- the Flickrites -- there's a whole lot more to it than that. For the elite few -- the Flickr version of 'social media experts' -- it's all about garnering exposure, and thus accruing views and comments. Ultimately, I guess there are dreams and delusions of grandeur, and surely some people manage to make money out of the whole process -- but just like every other Internet dream, I'm sure the most people fail and fade into obscurity.

One of the oldest rules of Flickr is not to flood your stream with new images. If you upload five photos, you automatically bump four photos from the top of your stream, most-visible spot. It's like publishing five blog posts, or spamming a bunch of tweets! Your contacts have also probably enabled the 'show only one photo' option, so if they're browsing recent uploads, they'll only see one photo anyway. It's much better to upload one photo each day, for five days -- and that's where Flickr Schedulr comes in!

With Schedulr, you create upload batches, and then decide on when and how often you want images to be uploaded -- but one a day is the default, for good reason.
Continue reading Flickr Schedulr lets you create an automated queue of uploads to Flickr

Flickr Schedulr lets you create an automated queue of uploads to Flickr originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST.

Apple recently let loose an update for iPhoto '11, which should prevent the database corruption bug that a few vocal users experienced upon firing up the new version for the first time. It's a pretty serious error if you happen to lose your entire photo library just because iPhoto has to "upgrade your library," so let's hope Apple's put this one to bed. Still, if you haven't upgraded yet, it might be worth making a good backup of your photo library just in case.

Get the update through the automatic built-in tool, or direct from Apple.
This feature is rolling out as part of a new push from Flickr to support OpenID. Google is the first partner, but support for more services is expected in the future.

Up until now, Yahoo-owned Flickr required a Yahoo ID to use. As you can see in the screenshot to the right, this is now also possible using an existing Google account. For now, Google accounts are supported only for those who are new to Flickr. Existing users will also get some enhancements to the sign-in experience, starting with the ability to sign in from any page on Flickr.

Flickriver was briefly mentioned on Download Squad back in 2007, but it really deserves its own post.

It's a very simple interface for browsing Flickr photos which displays a bunch of photos on the page, and you scroll down to view them. As you near the bottom, more photos are loaded so that you can just keep scrolling. This is by no means a new trick, but I find it very convenient and easy to use. What's nice about it is that it pre-loads four images at a time, so I don't find myself waiting for the next image when I want to view it.

You can search by photo, group, user, tag, or location, and then you can sort the results according to relevance, recency, or "interestingness." The whole thing is very low-key; it has a dark background, an uncluttered interface, and the bare minimum of JavaScript required to make it work. You won't find anything sliding around, fading in and out, or being overly modern.

Flickriver just gives you the photos you want to look at, with no frills.

Flickriver is a fun way to browse through Flickr photos originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. Blurb, the king of self-published coffee table books, has just launched a new Web-based tool: Bookify. The downloadable desktop app Blurb BookSmart still exists -- and it's still the preferred tool for complex book layouts -- but for speed, ease of use and convenience, Bookify is now the thing to use.

The road to glossy, self-published narcissism begins by simply selecting the size and shape of your book. Next, you import some photos. You can either upload them from your PC, or import them directly from Flickr (support for Picasa and Photobucket is missing, for some reason). Then the fun (and hard!) bit begins: layout. I couldn't begin to explain all of the layout options available to you -- there are lots -- but fortunately there's a tutorial tour that walks you through most of it.

Once you're done laying out the book, typing text, designing the cover art and generally playing the role of a perfectionist, ordering your new Blurb book takes just a few clicks. It won't be cheap -- but from the Blurb books that I've seen, you do get what you pay for.
I also want to bungee jump, but that's not something that computers can really help with, so let's stick to hair and tattoos...

It's the permanence of it all. Sure, hair might grow back -- and you can remove tattoos with lasers -- but you're still looking at weeks or months of pain and embarrassment. While I haven't found a good tool to virtually crop my hair, there is something for tattoos: TatMash 3D. It's free (with cheap premium upgrades, if you're a serial skin painter), and the site itself is ugly -- but it works! Not without issues, mind you.

First, you name and tag your image before you upload it. You have to click through to the next page to get the upload dialogue -- how very counterintuitive. The CAPTCHA sucks -- despite typing it correctly, the site disagreed -- and the uploader had some issues with my transparent PNG. GIFs worked fine, though.

Next, you have the option of uploading your own image, using your webcam to grab an image, or giving the site an image URL (which is great for plastering tattoos all over your favorite celebrity).

Then you create your TatMash. Drag the tattoo around, resize it, rotate it -- marvel as it magically hugs the contours of your body! This is where the "3D" bit comes in: "SkinSnap" somehow maps your skin and alters the shape of the tattoo. With the premium version you can do even more 3D wizardry! As you can see above, the DLS logo is quite heavily skewed by my bulging, manly musculature.

Once you're done, you have the usual social sharing options or you can create a "should I get this tattoo?" voting widget. Because everyone knows that asking your friends is a brilliant idea...
TatMash 3D lets you try a virtual tattoo before you take the plunge originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 14:30:00 EST. Min.us does one thing, and it does it surprisingly well: it shares images. Via the magic of HTML5 -- as long as you're using Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer 9 -- you can simply drag and drop images into Min.us.

Other than watch your gallery take shape (here's mine), there isn't much else you can do. You can rename your gallery and change the order of the images ... but that's it. You can't even rename the images -- so unless you rename the files on your hard disk first, you'll be stuck with some rather unsexy image titles.

Still, the galleries look and feel good. You can click through or use the arrow keys. It's also completely anonymous, with no login required -- all you get is an "admin" link and a "view" link. Very minimal indeed. Don't try to share a link to a specific image in a large gallery either -- it loads every image sequentially, so it can take quite some time to get to the linked image!

Looking forward, the developers want Min.us to be a sharing platform for all media types -- photo, video, audio, and documents -- but it's still very early days. I also don't see how it can remain free when dealing with such large quantities of data but we'll see!
Min.us is a very minimal HTML5 photo sharing and gallery creation tool originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 08:30:00 EST. Here at Download Squad, we're always on the lookout for cool little mobile apps that are both fun to use and useful. Sometimes that involves tickling our creative side and that's where Instagram comes in. Instagram, like many other apps available on the iPhone, allows you to take an image and apply effect filters to it. Some like 'Lord Kelvin" age your photo, others such as "Inkwell" desaturate it turning it black and white. Instagram comes packing no less than 11 filters, but what really sets it apart from others like Hipstamatic, is the inclusion of photo sharing.

Sharing

Of course export to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr and even Foursquare is a cinch, but Instagram also has its own photo sharing stream. It allows you to upload and share photos with followers and friends who also use Instagram. You can find fellow users by searching your address book on your iPhone, through Facebook or Twitter, or by searching for Instagram usernames within the app. Once you add your friends, you follow their stream just like Twitter, but instead of 140 characters and the odd image, you get a stream filled with beautiful and creative images -- well that bit depends on who you're following, so I guess it's not guaranteed.
Continue reading Instagram photo filter and sharing app for iPhone

Instagram photo filter and sharing app for iPhone originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 13:00:00 EST. Google recently announced the WebP image format boasting 40% greater image compression over JPEG and JPEG2000, and just this morning we covered a plug-in that brings browser support for the fledgling standard. Now Pixelmator, the slick Mac image editing suite that we've covered several times before, has added "the world's first" WebP compatibility into its armory. In the words of the Pixelmator team:

I am very excited to announce that Pixelmator 1.6.2 is the world's first app to bring WebP support (of any kind). What's more, it's not just some microscopic experimental support; it's complete, full, total, absolute WebP support!

So you can use Pixelmator 1.6.2 to easily open and edit WebP images as well as save or export images or image slices to the WebP format to create smaller, better looking images. You can even use Pixelmator's Export for Web feature to adjust the degree of compression and see the adjustment preview instantly (the glorious Pixelmator's Save for Web, ha!).

There's one small caveat however -- if you want to use WebP in Pixelmator's export for Web feature, you'll need to turn it on using the Terminal. Simply cut and paste the following, with Pixelmator closed, into Terminal:

defaults write com.pixelmatorteam.pixelmator enableWebP YES

Now, whether WebP will really catch on and replace the web and industry standard JPEG is anyone's guess. Pixelmator's ready, but if I were a betting man, my money would be on no. Then again, with the power of Google and their excellent Chrome browser behind it, anything is possible.

Picnik, a Web-based photo manipulation service that Google acquired back in March, has just received a bunch of new Halloweenesque effects, stickers, fonts.

After uploading a photo, you can now add such fantastic effects as 'vampire eyes', 'draculan dermis', fangs or 'zombify 2.0'. As you can see above, you can create some pretty scary results! Admittedly my face doesn't require much help to become a thing of nightmare, but still...

A few of the effects are 'Premium only', but that only costs $2 per month -- which must surely be worth it, if only to put fangs, emaciated zombie skin and morbid blood effects on your nearest and dearest.

ed note: Lee couldn't resist making a special Halloween treat for you... take the jump to check it out!

I'm a big fan of Gmail's HTML5-powered drag-and-drop attachment feature, and I've been waiting to see it pop up in other Web apps. Thanks to Ryan Wagner over at CyberNet, I discovered DropMocks -- an amazingly simple little photo sharing site that offers the same functionality.
Open your pictures folder, select a few images, and drag them onto a DropMocks tab in a supported browser (Firefox 4 or Chrome 6 or 7). Once the upload is complete, you'll receive a short(ish) URL to share with your friends.

Continue reading DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site

DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:10:00 EST. It combines a custom lens for your camera and a software component for your Mac or PC, and allows you to focus on anything you want, after you've shot the photo. I'm not clear on all the technical details, but the basic idea is that Plenoptic captures hundreds of miniature versions of your image, which it then uses to construct the larger image.

So, you're not really changing the focus of your image with Plentoptic, you're actually rebuilding an entirely new image where the focus is on a different plane. That way, you can choose to accentuate the foreground or the background of the image without losing any detail.

This is some serious future-flying-car-magic tech we're talking about. It's not commercially available yet, but it's awesome to see what we'll be able to do with digital photographs in the future.
Originally launched back in August (yes, we missed it!), the Bing Dynamic theme pack is a quick and easy way to get the latest and greatest Bing photos pasted all over your Windows 7 desktop wallpaper.

Four new images were added to the rotation today, but I honestly have no idea how many images are actually part of the pack. Apparently two new images are added every week -- it uses an RSS feed to discover new images! -- and there's nothing better than turning your computer on to be randomly surprised by a new, beautiful landscape, right?

Grab the auto-updating Bing Dynamic theme for Windows 7, enjoy some pretty pictures originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 07:00:00 EST. After the first attempt, TwitPic blocked Posterous entirely, and threatened to sue, so Posterous took down the app. Now it's back, though, as an Adobe-Air-based export tool that TwitPic can't block (yet).

The new tool lets you sign in via your Twitter account, which ought to get around TwitPic's current method of blocking Posterous by IP address. There's no telling when or if TwitPic will come up with a new method of stopping Posterous, or whether it's even worth their time at this point. The new export tool can theoretically export your photos to Flickr, Facebook and other locations on the Web, but it's only set up to work with Posterous by default.
Thanks to the turtleneck mafia, awful-and-noisy-built-in-camera photography has become something far bigger than most of us expected -- who could've predicted that the iPhone would become the most popular camera on Flickr in under two years? But now, ladies and gentlemen, it 's the turn of the Android. With dozens of new Android handsets emerging every month, and with the Android market share creeping ahead of the iPhone, it's now time to talk about Android photography.

There's a bit of a problem, though: most photo manipulation software for Android phones smells worse than a Titan's loincloth. Mashable has a list of them, but they're all plagued with inadequacies and bugs; some are slow and some simply don't work on newer phones!

Enter Photoshop Express for Android. From Adobe you'd expect nothing short of a photo editing miracle app, but alas that isn't the case. Photoshop Express is certainly useful -- and it is a very polished, professional app that's free of bugs -- but I just wish it did a bit more. I wish it wasn't so annoyingly devoid of obvious, easy-to-implement features.
Continue reading Adobe Photoshop Express for Android taken for a spin, leaves me a little unsatisfied

Adobe Photoshop Express for Android taken for a spin, leaves me a little unsatisfied originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST.
When Adobe released an updated Photoshop app for iOS devices, I was more than a little green with envy. I own an Android phone, y'see -- and I wanted in on the action! I needn't have worried though, because as of today, Adobe has released an updated and shiny Photoshop Express for Android app. I'll review it later today.

Also released on Photoshop.com today are the redesigned Express Editor, Organizer and Uploader. As you can see from the screenshot above, the Editor is both beautiful and full of functionality. The Organizer is very neat, allowing you to sort all of your uploaded photos into albums -- plus you can also connect it to Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket and Picasa! The Uploader is a desktop AIR app that basically replicates the Organizer's uploading capabilities, but it lets you drag-and-drop images into its window. Apparently it also lets you upload PSD files, though I haven't tried that yet.
I've only touched on the features provided by these new tools, and obviously I need to investigate further. If you have a go with them, report your findings in the comments!
The trick lets you click the volume up-down button on your phone to take a picture, which violated Apple's decree against remapping any of the iPhones.

It's not 100% clear whether the developer pulled the app, or whether Apple did. We do know that a version of Camera+ with the "volume snap" feature in its preferences was previously rejected from the App Store, and now the app has been pulled shortly after taptaptap revealed on Twitter that the feature was still hidden in Camera+. Sounds like Apple to me.

If you still have Camera+ on your phone, you can turn on volume snap by putting "camplus://enablevolumesnap" into your Safari address bar. I got it to work with the latest Camera+ version, 1.2.1, and volume snap definitely makes it easier to take steady photos. I understand Apple's dedication to the Human Interface Guidelines that have improved all-around app quality on the iPhone, but I wish they'd make an exception for cases like this, where deviating from the rules a little bit results in a more useful app.

Easy Image Modifier is a simple piece of portable freeware that can rotate, resize, convert, and rename JPG, PNG, and BMP files.

I tested it with a bunch of large JPGs (about 1.5MB each). I just dragged the JPGs over it and dropped them. Then, I set the Resize option, set a destination, and clicked the huge button up on top (the one that says "Drop images here." Once you drop them, its text changes to say how many images you've selected and that you have to click it to start).

What can I say? It works as advertised. I like the simple, sensible UI and the fact that it's portable, no-frills, and absolutely free. There is a paid Plus version, but besides the tiny menu item that says "Plus!," you will see no mention of it within the program. Oh, and I also like that it doesn't add anything to the file context menu.

I will be sticking with IrfanView, but if you don't currently have an easy-to-use image converter, you could do much worse than this one.

Easy Image Modifier provides free, easy batch image processing originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST.
