Timelines are hazy for Flash Player's arrival on these platforms (the press release just says they're "expected" to support Flash Player 10.1) but the WebOS 2.0 version has already started shipping with new Palm handsets in France.

The press release doesn't say much more than, "we'll be on all these platforms someday." Here's the exact wording:

Flash Player 10.1 is available on Android and Google TV today, with BlackBerry platform, HP webOS 2.0, future versions of Windows(R) Phone, LiMo, MeeGo, and Symbian OS also expected to support Flash Player 10.1. For a list of devices supported today, visit Adobe Flash Player 10.1 certified devices.

The Palm Pre might not be selling as well as hoped, but its price tag makes it an interesting option. Well, its price tag and hackability.

Some ambitious fellows have managed to get an X server running on the Pre, kicking off a potential orgy of desktop Linux application ports. Where to start? Heck, why not just dump the whole dang OpenOffice suite onto your phone?

I've got the same question here as I did with the N900 build of Chromium -- is it worthwhile to put apps with a desktop UX on a mobile device, or is the experience just too different for straight-up ports to work well?

The potential is undeniably cool -- as our old pal Brad points out over at Mobiputing, it might not be long before apps like VLC, Gwibber, or Empathy wind up on the Pre.

Palm stock crashed to 4 dollars over the weekend, and with some analysts valuing it at zero dollars, a great deal of speculation about the future of the brand ensued.

What the heck happened, here? John Gruber at Daring Fireball linked to a clear and comprehensive analysis of Palm's current woes, written by someone with considerable insight into the situation, Jean-Louis Gassée (of Apple Newton, BeOS, and Palmsource fame).

According to Gassée, Palm's poorly-timed unveiling of the Pre (just before Apple announced a major iPhone price drop) wasn't the only problem. Failing to strike a deal with Verizon before the Motorola Droid came on the scene hurt too. Then Palm made a bad situation worse by sending out tons of extra inventory to retailers -- we're talking hundreds of thousands of additional handsets -- in an effort to push additional sales of the Pre. That backfired, as you might expect, leaving Palm to take a loss on over a million unsold phones. It also didn't help that Palm put so much time and promotional muscle behind an iTunes syncing feature that never fully worked, and locked them into a losing battle with Apple.

Things look bleak for Palm. The crowded smartphone market, with heavy-hitters like Apple, Google, and now Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, means there might not even be much value left in the Palm name, let alone the technology. Will some hero (or some fool, depending on who you ask) step in to buy the company?

For more details on this sad story, proceed to Gassée's post. Our friends at Engadget also have an in-depth plan for Palm's salvation, but it sounds a bit farfetched to me.

Palm stock now worthless, vultures begin circling overhead originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Mar 2010 12:01:00 EST. As with all things Gowalla, the client is slickly designed, and includes all the bells and whistles found in the Gowalla iPhone app from Checking in, friends checkins and the recently expanded 'Trips' feature.

Whilst the number of webOS devices may be somewhat lower than, say, iPhones, the release today is particularly important given the webOS browser doesn't support location services that would otherwise allow Gowalla users to use the well-designed mobile website.

Be sure to check out our gallery of Gowalla for webOS screenshots - and if you own a Pre or Pixi, the app is ready to download in the webOS App Catalog.
With Palm's webOS App Catalog finally starting to roll out paid applications around the world, EA Mobile and Palm seem to be enticing folks to start using the App Catalog with a trio of free games. Unfortunately, in order to nab the three downloads -- Need for Speed Underground, Monopoly and The Sims 3 -- you'll need to be in the UK or Ireland.
If you're one of the folks with a Palm Pre in your pocket and looking for a couple of games to burn some time with, head on over to the App Catalog, and download them before the end of the month when the promotion ends.

Mobile Minute: Free EA games for UK and Ireland Palm Pre users! originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 09:00:00 EST.
It's been a little while since Facebook launched their (admittedly barebones) application for Palm's webOS devices -- that's the Pre and Pixi to you and I. However, in amongst the news of the webOS 1.4 update dropping earlier this week, Facebook have also released an all-new version of the application that adds a number of useful features.

Whilst the original version was handy for checking on your friends' status updates, it offered little more than a Twitter-like UI for the Facebook service. With this new update, there's not just the status messages, but news feed items, events and photos all within a stylishly tidy UI.

The update is, as you'd expect, freely available for download via the Palm App Catalog.
Before Apple, Google, Nokia, BlackBerry, and Microsoft offered on-device app stores for mobile phones and PDAs, there were web-based stores including PocketGear, Handango, and MobiHand.

These stores are still alive and kicking, and allow you to browse, purchase, and download applications for pretty much any mobile platform except the iPhone -- including Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm, and BlackBerry.

But it looks like that space is consolidating a bit, with PocketGear announcing that it has just purchased its number one rival, Handango. Buy bringing Handango into the fold, PocketGear now offers more than 140,000 free and paid applications for download.

Of course, downloading apps from the web and then copying them to your device isn't quite as quick or efficient a process as using an in-device mobile app store -- but PocketGear offers one of those too, at least for Windows Mobile.
VisualBoyAdvance is an open-source emulator for Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. If you want to relive the glory days of handheld gaming on your computer, it's pretty much your go-to app. But what if you'd rather play handheld games on, well, a handheld device? Palm Pre and Pixi owners can do just that, thanks to a port of VisualBoyAdvance for WebOS.

A very enticing video of Mario Kart running on a Pre [check it out after the jump!] makes me wish that something this cool - and dubiously legal - could ever slip through Apple's app store and onto my iPhone. (I can neither confirm nor deny that I once jailbroke an iPod Touch to play Final Fantasy for the NES.)

Apparently original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games run smoothly on a Pre, but you might get a little lag when playing Game Boy Advance ROMS. Still: Tetris! Super Mario Land! Kirby! I'm certainly not saying that Download Squad condones piracy, but it's very impressive that someone was able to get this running on WebOS.

Transmission, the popular open-source BitTorrent client, just got an important update that includes a few of the features topping users' most-requested list. Magnet link support is included, and so is support for trackerless torrents. Those are the big changes, but the list of other improvements and new features is longer than your arm. Check out the release notes for Transmission 1.8 for a full rundown of the 100+ changes.

For Torrent junkies, Magnet links are an increasing popular alternative to downloading .torrent files from a central server. Instead, you get the torrent from a peer, which works even when a tracker is down or the .torrent file is unavailable for download. Magnet support is an important enough feature that leaving it out would likely cause power users to switch to another app for their P2P needs.

Transmission 1.8 also includes some fixes just for Mac users. Quick Look works again in Snow Leopard, and revealing files in the Finder is easier now. You can also optionally add an "incomplete" folder, if you don't want partially-finished files clogging up Downloads.

The original beta of the application, whilst stylish, was (understandably) slow and incomplete - however today's new build is both feature complete and blazing fast. Not only that, but the new update sees the app sport a slightly new look.

When it comes to location-based games, Foursquare currently has the lead in terms of devices supported - with a universally-accessible mobile site, Blackberry app, Android client and the original iPhone app available. However we're going to be keeping our eyes on the other location-based services: Gowalla recently announced their plans to bring out Blackberry and webOS applications 'this year'.

If you want to play with the latest version of the Foursquare app, it'll be available in the App Catalogue shortly - or you can download it from the Foursquare for webOS Github page. The app remains open source, with the code available via Github.
In case you're wondering why your RSS reader has gone into overdrive, it just so happens to be Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week -- and that means that all the mobile companies bar one (Apple!) are announcing their new devices and software. Today's turn is underdog Palm, who've been outlining their plans for the webOS platform.
Over the last few updates, it would appear that Palm are really working to bump the number of technologies available for games -- and the homebrew community has been busy looking at the updates to figure out what's available.

Over the Christmas break, the folks at Pre Central noticed that some plucky coders have taken it upon themselves to bring DOOM, in full hardware-accelerated glory, to the Pre. Whilst it's not ready for mainstream consumption, and requires the webOS 1.3.5 update that still isn't out in certain areas of the world, the app certainly opened my eyes to applications that may potentially be in the pipeline for the Pre.

Be sure to check out the video of DOOM in action on the Pre after the break!

We're going to be covering some of these 1,000 in the coming days here at Download Squad, however we'd be remiss to not mention the 1,000th app which (quite by chance) happens to be from our comrades at Engadget.

The Engadget app - which complements the iPhone and iPod touch application covered by our friends at TUAW a few days ago - provides you with news from Engadget, Engadget Mobile and Engadget HD along with comments for each story. There's also the option to share stories via Facebook, Email and Twitter.

You can grab the (free) Engadget application directly to your phone here, or browse for it in the App Catalog.

Palm's webOS App Catalog hits 1,000 apps originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 02 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST.
Whilst you can check in online using Foursquare's mobile website, the folks at Foursquare have been gradually rolling out more native applications after launching with just an iPhone app. On top of the existing iPhone, Android and beta Blackberry applications out there, the new webOS app has just been made available for Pre and Pixi users to use.

Though the application is available as part of the webOS App Catalogue, it's currently still in beta. As such there are a couple of unfinished areas to the app - including the leaderboards for each Foursquare city.

However, if you simply have to check into it at the gym, coffee shop or elsewhere on your Pre, be sure to have a look at our gallery after the break and visit the App Catalogue to download the beta!

Continue reading Foursquare beta now available for the Palm Pre

Foursquare beta now available for the Palm Pre originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 21:40:00 EST.
Ever since Palm and Apple started their dance about the Pre's ability to sync with iTunes, I've been keeping an eye out for alternative ways to move media to my Pre.

Over the last few weeks I've been putting three applications through their paces with my Pre to find a suitable workaround for this glaring omission on Palm's part: MarkSpace's GoGadget for webOS, Salling Software's Media Sync and doubleTwist. All three applications are available for Windows and Mac OS X, however in this review were tested on Mac OS X.

The update is notable, albeit for the items that the update does not address: video recording is still missing, and there's no sign of the Pre's iTunes syncing being re-enabled with this new release either.

That said, if you're sporting a Pre the update is probably one you'll want to apply to your device. Here's the notable changes in this update:

Users can now store more applications on their devices, with the artificial limit on installed applications removed.

Improved battery life (especially when in 'marginal coverage areas')

Support for audio and video when received via MMS

Data detectors to launch either Google Maps (or Sprint Nav) from Address Book contacts' addresses

The update is now available for download via the Pre's built-in Updates application, although devices will try to download the update over the coming days if you're connected to a high-speed data connection.

Oh my... not content with finally being at the stage where they're ready to release a working version of their 'Fennec' mobile web browser (albeit only for the Maemo based Nokia N900 initially), Mozilla seem to be on something of a mad world-domination-power-trip at the same time.

Why? Well, Mozilla have declared that Firefox Mobile will render all existing device application stores redundant as developers shift to developing applications which simply run in your mobile web browser.

Although this is probably the millionth time I've read that web applications will make client applications completely redundant, I'll explore their asseration for the benefit of you, dear DLS reader.

Vice President of Mobile at Mozilla, Jay Sullivan, spoke to PC Pro about application development and raised some valid points. He talked about the relative simplicity of developing in JavaScript and HTML and the benefits of not having to learn the development platform required for a specific mobile or desktop OS. It is valid to say that, featuring the fastest Javascript engine of any mobile browser, some great experiences will be possible with Firefox Mobile.

But I see a problem -- two, in fact.
Continue reading Mozilla on Firefox Mobile: All your app store are belong to us!

Mozilla on Firefox Mobile: All your app store are belong to us! originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 10:26:00 EST. Ever since Palm announced its webOS system earlier in the year, the company has been continually working out its approach for application development for the device. With the App Catalog in beta for customer use, and the Mojo SDK available for developers to build applications, whilst Palm may not yet be rivalling Apple's "there's an app for that" campaign the company is certainly working to provide a far more open developer environment than its Cupertino rival.

Today sees the introduction of Project Ares: an open beta of an IDE for building Palm applications that - get this - runs entirely in your web browser. It even offers drag-and-drop interface building, code editing and a debugger for rooting out bugs in your code. Given that from the browser it integrates with any local installation of the webOS SDK for deployment to your Pre or Pixi, and Project Ares allows you to build an application without a multi-gigabyte SDK download, it's a mighty impressive technology.

Project Ares is available as a beta to all webOS developers via the Palm developer website, and requires Safari, Chrome or Firefox to run.
Share
Palm unveils "Project Ares" webOS developer tool originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 17:32:00 EST. The SEVEN Beta setup is an interesting one.

As a company, Seven (enough capitalising already!) sell their excellent push e-mail products only via mobile operator channels, however their Beta program is an excellent way for users on unsupported carriers (that's likely you and I) to enjoy their software.

Available in a variety of editions on a variety of platforms, Seven's software allows you to receive push mail on your device from a variety of services - Exchange, Yahoo, GMail, AOL Mail, HoTMaiL and standard POP and IMAP services are all supported. A Beta release it might be (with the usual associated disclaimers), but the application is a supremely useful piece of software that i've been using for many years to push synchronise GMail with my Windows Mobile devices.

I happened to visit the Seven Beta site earlier today to download the latest Windows Mobile client and I was intrigued to notice that an Android download option had appeared. Obviously I had to download the application and take a look!

As expected, it's a Seven client for the Android OS that includes all of the goodness that i'm used to - push mail across a host of platforms, 'quiet times' when push can be automatically disabled, multiple accounts, server contact search, customisable notifications and more! Although the currently version of the software is missing a few features i'd like to see (primarily HTML mail), for Android users it can often be a trying task getting mail set up and working as desired if you are using something other than GMail, and Seven is making that story easier. I've been pushing an additional e-mail account and a HoTMaiL account all day without any issues!

If you'd like to try out Seven on Android (or indeed any of their other support platforms, which include WinMo Standard / Professional, Symbian S60, Palm OS and even J2ME!) then head on over to the Seven Community Forum to sign up for an account.
SEVEN on Android - Ah, push it - push it real good... originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST.
