A new Windows BitTorrent client called zButterfly has a twist that sets it apart from the competition: a menu of current movie releases, including the hottest flicks that are still running in theaters. zButterfly has an easy-to-use interface for searching and browsing the releases, and operates entirely on torrentless downloading via magnet links. Even the most clueless downloader can use zButterfly to get access to recent Hollywood fare.

This is certainly going to draw angry reactions (and probably lawsuits) from the movie industry, but ZButterfly's creators think they have a solid defense. It's the old, "We're just a search engine. We don't actually host any files" defense. That'll be interesting, especially when there aren't even .torrent files hosted by zButterfly.

The folks behind Pioneer One have been busy since the show's pilot release back in June, and it seems as though their hard work is beginning to pay off. The pilot was a campy success, having won Best Drama Pilot at the New York Television Festival -- but it won instant pseudo-historical status as well. It was the first science fiction drama series to be produced entirely off of donation-funding and released freely through torrent networks. Hundreds of thousands of views and five months later, the made-for-torrent drama series is set to move forward with the release of three new episodes, starting as early as mid-December.

Viewers can also expect to see a revised re-release of the pilot, in which one of the main roles has been recast. The upcoming episodes will comprise about half the expected first season -- of a projected four-season offering should the show's success continue. On that note, it's important to remember that Pioneer One, along with other free P2P community offerings like it, are only made possible by donations. So don't be afraid to donate if you like it, and be sure to catch the teaser trailer for the upcoming episodes after the break.

Continue reading Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes

Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST.
Way back in May, uTorrent 's Project Griffin gave us a sneak peek at its new App Studio. Today, the new version has gone live -- and uTorrent 2.2 will be bringing app support to its 65 million users. Among the app options on launch day are BitDefender's Virus Guard, TuneUp (which we've covered before), and content apps for TED, ZuluMusic, and VODO. There's also TorrentTweet, which lets you post status updates about specific files. On the privacy side of things, uTorrent 2.2 makes it easier for users to configure and use proxies -- a welcome improvement for those of you looking for a bit of anonymity while you transfer files.

The uTorrent installer -- like many other free apps -- also includes a bundled toolbar and offers to switch your homepage and default search at the end of the process. Make sure you untick the boxes unless you actually want what's being offered.
To the average downloading public, the recent news about LimeWire being forced to shut down sounds pretty ominous. At my day job, I've already been asked "How do I download songs now?" While LimeWire shutting down is bad news for its users, there's a silver lining to this cloud.

The Gnutella network did not get shut down -- the actual songs you were downloading came from the Gnutella network, not directly from LimeWire. LimeWire merely found the songs on the network and then downloaded them.

LimeWire is open source software -- this means any developer with the know-how could download the LimeWire program code and modify it and release his or her own version of LimeWire.

So, how do you download songs now? Easy -- just replace LimeWire with an alternative program which can download from the Gnutella network and you're good to go!
There are a slew of helper apps, like the excellent Transdroid, but their main purpose is to allow remote, on-the-move management of your installed-at-home BitTorrent and Gnutella clients. FrostWire is different: it brings P2P transfers to your phone -- yes, FrostWire shares ringtones, camera photos, music and apps that are stored on your phone.

FrostWire for Android is just for phone-to-phone transfers, too. Despite there being an excellent desktop version of FrostWire, the Android version doesn't seem to search the same network. Perhaps that's a good thing, though: do you really want to download 700MB movies over 3G? It is quite fun to download photos from other people's phones, however...
Continue reading FrostWire for Android brings quick, slick P2P file sharing to your phone

FrostWire for Android brings quick, slick P2P file sharing to your phone originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST.
That a U.S. federal judge would finally grant RIAA's request comes as a numbing shock to the system. Perhaps the RIAA simply drew the right judge -- this is the same Judge Kimba Wood that found LimeWire guilty of copyright infringement back in May -- or maybe the lawsuit just snowballed in gravitas until it became unignorable.

For those of you that use BitTorrent, you might be surprised to hear that LimeWire is still most-installed P2P application with a market share of 37% -- uTorrent, by far the largest BitTorrent client, only has a 14% market share.
Ever found an awesome download on the Web and thought, "Man, why don't they offer a torrent download?!" It's so much nicer pulling down Ubuntu ISOs at 690K per second via µTorrent instead of 250K or so via HTTP.

A newly-launched service called Burnbit is set to give Web downloads a much-needed punch in the face. Head over to their website, drop the URL to an HTTP download in the blank, and Burnbit automatically creates a torrent file and begins seeding. Burnbit's torrent page shows detailed torrent data as well, including the number of seeders and leechers, health, and MD5 hash.

There's a catch, of course. The host has to be serving files via HTTP; HTTPS isn't supported, nor is FTP. Not yet, anyway. Burnbit has only just launched, however, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them working in the near future.
BitTorrent Inc's Mainline client (i.e. the one you can download from their homepage) now has the ability to use apps that, until now, were only usable with uTorrent. These apps allow you to augment your BitTorrent client much in the same way that Firefox add-ons or Chrome extensions alter your browser.

Built using JavaScript, HTML and CSS -- the same 'Open Web' technologies that Mozilla has been harping about -- these apps are free, and easily downloadable from within the new BitTorrent client. Having said that, only 11 apps are available at the moment (including the rather cute 'Torrent Tweet' and a BitDefender-powered virus scanner) -- and I'm not quite sure how developers go about having their apps indexed by the client's built-in search engine (which might be why there are only 11 apps...) Still, if you want to have a go at developing your own app, there's an official SDK and some tutorials to get you started.

I'm a little baffled by this feature coming to BitTorrent Mainline before uTorrent -- but perhaps BitTorrent Inc wants to try it out on Mainline's 'paltry' 14 million users before rolling it out to uTorrent's 60+ million users. Incidentally, if you're a uTorrent user, apps should find their way to a stable release before the end of the year.

Unsinkable torrent site The Pirate Bay was temporarily down after police raided file-sharing servers in as many as 14 European countries on Tuesday morning. TorrentFreak, one of the web's most prominent torrent news sites, reports that the main target was the Pirate Bay's ISP in Sweden, where police tried to find out who was using two specific IP addresses. More raids happened in major Swedish cities, including at one university.

Although The Pirate Bay shares a host in Sweden with WikiLeaks, every indication is that these raids have nothing to do with that site, which has been in the news for moving its servers to an underground bunker to protect its secrets.

Computers and servers were seized, and 4 people are being questioned, but it's not clear from reports whether they're connected to The Pirate Bay. Other countries reportedly involved in the raids include The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Rumor has it that these raids were coordinated by Belgian law enforcement, and have been in the works for nearly 2 years.

Right now, the Pirate Bay website seems to be up and down sporadically. The largest non-TPB torrent trackers still seem to be online, however.
I bring you news that won't shock but will surely delight! Just over 40% of Steam users have a BitTorrent client installed -- and 75% of those are using uTorrent. Mainline is second with about 10%, with Vuze and BitComet coming in third and fourth place respectively.

These delicious statistics have emerged thanks to Steam's hardware and software survey which now includes a breakdown of installed applications on each user's computer. With up to 25 million users being polled in the survey, the accuracy is really second to none -- at least when it comes to gamer-specific trends! It's worth noting that the survey is completely automated too -- Steam scans your hard disk and hardware configuration to produce these figures.

In non-BitTorrent-related news, Firefox is by far the most popular browser amongst gamers with 63% of Steam users having it installed (Chrome is almost at the bottom with only 11.5%). Almost everyone has Adobe Flash, 73% have Acrobat Reader, and a rather large 57% have Microsoft Office installed. I wonder how many of those Office installations were downloaded via BitTorrent... Perhaps Steam gamers spend so much money on games that they don't have enough left to spend on Microsoft Office...?

Incidentally, these figures are only for Windows installations. Here's something for the Mac crusaders, though: iTunes is actually installed on more computers than uTorrent (but only just), and QuickTime is installed on 44% of computers!

(Note: the above image is snipped, or I would never have fit it all in!)

Last year saw the arrival of Coda.fm, a torrent site which offered a different take on music downloads. It's design is more reminiscent of a music discovery site or download store than a torrent indexer like isoHunt or TPB. Take.fm offers a similar experience, but for movie downloads.

The site is relatively new, so you won't find virtual shelf after virtual shelf of titles to choose from, but it's growing steadily. Right now there are just over 1,200 movies listed. And just like video on demand sites you're able to browse by release date, genre, or popularity and there's a search option as well. RSS feeds are provided for new releases and newly added torrents.

IMDB ratings are posted (when available, of course), as is a link to the relevant IMDB page and video details like resolution, audio bitrate, and more.

Take.fm's developer (who happens to be behind Coda.fm as well) told TorrentFreak "We don't have to get used to a third-rate user experience just for dealing with torrents. I tried to build a website that I - and hopefully all the torrents community - would enjoy using." Mission accomplished.

In an ironic twist, The USCG seems to have been caught quite red-handed in an attempt to lazily steal code from a competitor's website. They didn't just take bits and pieces, either; the site they had "built" was a nearly complete reproduction of the original. To further deepen the irony of the incident, it was the crew at TorrentFreak who called them out on their shenanigans by posting screenshots of both sites and their source code.

You may remember the USCG for their mass-litigation back in May of this year over infringement of The Hurt Locker -- in which they began suing thousands of file-sharers on behalf of the film's makers.

After grabbing their screenshots, and no doubt having a good laugh at the USCG's expense, TorrentFreak contacted the Copyright Enforcement Group, to let them know that <a href="http://www.copyrightsettlements.com/"">their settlements site had been ripped off by the competition. The CEG promptly replied that they had never authorized anyone to use their site's code, and that the USCG would be receiving a cease and desist letter from them. It didn't take long for the doppelganger-site to begin a quick metamorphosis into a completely different, bare-bones replacement page. Needless to say, the entire ordeal is pretty embarrassing for the USCG.

U.S. Copyright Group caught stealing competitor's code originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 31 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST.
uTorrent, one of the most popular BitTorrent clients around, just got an update so big that they renumbered the version from 2.1 to 3.0. What new features were that important? Streaming torrents, for one, and a web interface that works on iPad and Android, for another. uTorrent 3.0 is now in alpha and available for download.

To use the new web interface, download uTorrent 3.0 -- for Windows only, so far, sorry! -- and set a username and password in your preferences. Then you can log in at web.utorrent.com on your iPhone, iPad or Android device, and control your torrents on the go. Convenient!

As for streaming, there's a new protocol called Project Pheon that has been in the works for some time. It's not for streaming movies and TV shows from torrent files, though (that feature was added back in 2009). It's about live video broadcasts, a la Justin.TV or Ustream. Apparently, the latency is impressively low. Let me know if you have any luck testing out this new protocol.

There's no exploitation in play here, just the wholesale harvesting and presentation of superficial data for roughly one-fifth of Facebook's half-billion strong user-base.

Ron Bowes, of Skull Security, posted the torrent to the Pirate Bay after realizing that his pet project had become something that others might be interested in. He had basically crawled the Facebook directory, and indexed the results. What he got was a list 171 million entries long, representing 100 million unique users, their names, and their Facebook URLs. He packaged it all into a database and posted the 2.8GB file as a torrent.

It's important to note that there isn't any other information in the database. Shortly after word got out about the torrent, the BBC posted a story about it, and quoted a random user in the comments section as stating that it was "awesome and a little terrifying." Honestly, the only thing terrifying about any of this is the thought of going through the Facebook directory. Seriously, I looked, and there are so many people with my name that I would never find myself.

Bowes has stated that, though there isn't any real information aside from names and a URLs in the database, any number of contact details may be present on a user's Facebook page -- it all depends on how that user has his privacy settings set. Basically, with this database in hand, a potentially malicious user could sift through all the names and come across the user he was looking for, see that user's Facebook landing-page (the little page with their name, picture, and a few friends) -- and that's about it.

But regardless of the harmless nature of the database, this torrent has become a big deal, because simply being in the cavernous Facebook directory is an option in itself. Now that there's a torrent containing the most basic contact information for 100 million users, that particular privacy setting has become null for the users on that list.

So, in the end, this is just one more reminder for everybody on Facebook to check their privacy settings.

Torrented database contains public data for 100 million Facebook users originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 22:42:00 EST.
The case itself ruled that General Electric, in using hacked security dongles to repair some uninterruptible power supplies produced by another company, did not violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Why? Because the end goal was legal. If the hacked dongles had been used for the forces of evil, the story would be different.

While this doesn't sound immediately applicable to DRM-protected software, music and movies, bear in mind that the DMCA is the foundation for every spurious copyright claim made by RIAA, MPAA and the myriad of other digital rights groups. In essence, this ruling means that you're free to break DRM on media that you own. No longer is it illegal to rip your own DVDs or crippled audio CDs onto your hard disk. I think there might also be some implication for the godawful DRM used on contemporary games like Assassin's Creed 2 (and if you're a lawyer, please leave a comment!)

In case you were wondering, this doesn't make piracy legal. It just means that bypassing DRM to reach a legal goal -- i.e. fair use of things you own -- is now protected by common law.

The aptly named Recording Industry vs. The People blog has done a little investigative journalism and produced some fantastic figures that truly illustrate just how pathetically pointless the RIAA is. Over the course of three years, the RIAA has spent a total of $64 million in the tracking down and prosecution of music pirates. The total amount recovered by the RIAA, in the form of settlements and fines, is a paltry $1.3 million.

The RIAA, if you weren't aware, is funded by the music industry. That $64 million --instead of going to the artists -- will have instead have been handed to the RIAA to be squandered inefficiently and, looking at the numbers, impotently.

Of course, the other way of looking at it is that music pirates are putting food on the plates of these poor, useless lawyers who can't litigate to save their asses.

The Pirate Bay's database of over 4 million registered users has been compromised. All user names, along with their associated email and IP addresses have been obtained and are now in the hands of three Argentinian 'researchers'.

Speaking to KrebsOnSecurity, and on his own blog, ringleader Ch Russo says that The Pirate Bay's defenses fell to a few simple SQL injections. He's even been kind enough to provide a video of the hack [direct FLV link], if you're interested in replicating it (though at the time of publishing, TPB is down for maintenance, so you'll have to find another site to try it out on!).

The plot thickens though. Justifying the hack, Ch Russo says: 'The community caused problems to huge companies and corporations.' He is, of course, talking about the RIAA, MPAA and any other rights-policing agency. But just one sentence later he says the hack was not borne out of anger, nor was it to seek commercial recompense. So... who knows!

If you had a registered account at The Pirate Bay, do let us know if you receive a legal threat in the next few days and weeks...

You may remember that, back in May of this year, the Swedish Pirate Party became the new ISP of the Pirate Bay. That alone was not only surprising, but proved to be politically spectacular in the rawest sense of the word. Now the Pirate Party wants to take their stand even further, and plans to use a section of the Swedish Constitution to allow them to host the seemingly indefatigable TPB from inside Parliament.

The Party announced their plan in a blog post at their official site on Friday. They state that while there shouldn't be a need for such drastic action, that hosting the torrent site from within the walls of Swedish Parliament would carry "an important symbolic value." There's not much doubt that they're right about symbolism there.

The Party references a section of the Swedish Constitution that protects MP's from prosecution if they're acting in accordance with their political mandate. In this case, hosting the Pirate Bay would not only fall under that wide umbrella, but would also provide a measure of immunity that would be much harder to crack than ever before.

Whether or not the Party will be able to pull this off hinges on the coming September elections, which as TorrentFreak points out, currently shows a 4% gap that needs to be filled for the party to get a seat. Given their success last year in winning a seat in the EU Parliament, I'd say they've got a decent chance.

uTorrent, one of the most popular torrent apps for Windows, is getting a stable release for Mac today. According to the uTorrent blog, it's been a years-long road toward a Mac client that has nearly achieved feature parity with its Windows counterpart. All of the protocol enhancements that make uTorrent fast are part of this Mac release, including (and this is straight off the blog, so I don't leave anything out) D
HT, PEX, Protocol Encryption and the new uTP transport.

uTorrent looks like it might give Transmission a serious run for its money as the best Mac-ready torrent client. Both are lightweight and focused on speed, which makes them a lot more useful than some of the torrent bloatware out there (I'm looking at you, Vuze!).

And that uTP transport thing? That's the protocol which helps us get around ISP traffic throttling by dynamically giving you the best speeds possible based on network conditions, and it yields to your regular TCP traffic (think web browsing) so that running torrents won't cripple the rest of your online activities. Although it's somewhat controversial, many people in the torrent community see it as a very good thing.
Google lawsuit, where Viacom sued the Big G for letting YouTube users upload its copyrighted material. Google won the billion-dollar case, but TorrentFreak says BitTorrent users are the real winners.

The ruling essentially says that if copyright holders want content removed for violating the DMCA, they must ask to have it removed. That means Google doesn't have to pre-emptively screen everything that goes up on YouTube, and it may also mean that torrent sites don't have to check their links for torrents of copyrighted material before allowing the links to be posted. That's TorrentFreak's interpretation, of course, not a judge's, but it's still very interesting.

TF goes on to point out that most torrent sites have ways for copyright holders to communicate and request a takedown of a link to their copyrighted material. Maybe they'll have to do that, now, before they sue to get a torrent site taken offline.
