To use the service, you have to have an iPhone 4, an iPad or a fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2. If you do, you'll be able to locate your device on a map, lock it, display a message of your choosing on your device's display (so presumably someone who finds it may return it), play a sound, or, if all else fails, remotely wipe your data. The service works from any browser or any other iOS device that has the Find My iPhone, iPod touch and iPadd app installed.
This update, while not a major one, isn't all about fixing bugs either. Some important -- and previously missing -- functionality is now built in.

TweetDeck for Android now has support for landscape mode for all update detail views, and gets support for TwitPic and manual URL shortening through Bit.ly. Users can now delete direct messages that they have received, straight from within the app. It now supports Facebook's recently unveiled Single Sign-on. And alongside the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, old style retweets are now a go for protected users, favoriting tweets is now fixed on 3G in France, dismissing Places notifications is now possible, and Facebook likes and comments should stay in app.

TweetDeck for Android 1.0.3 is available in the Android Market for owners of devices running Android 1.6 and newer.
This makes 60 Minutes the first prime-time news show to do so and the app blends video content with online features.

The new app offers high-quality video from the television broadcast as well as text versions of the program content -- including previews, segments, web extras and clips. There are also behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the stories that appear on the show and an archive of segments related to the week's headlines. You can search for stories (whether they're from the current or past seasons), search by correspondent's name, and browse segments by categories.

Watching video works over both Wi-Fi and 3G, and the quality is adjusted on-the-fly according to your connection type.

The 60 Minutes iPad app is available now in the iTunes App Store for $4.99.

60 Minutes launches iPad app originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. There are two separate apps available, one optimized for the iPad, and one for the iPhone. Both contain all the material from the print editions, but there are no fancy UI effects here, compared to other magazines -- it's all nice and subtle touches to make the reading experience enjoyable. Articles are also available in audio form, if you'd rather listen instead of read.

Unlike other major print publications, The Economist has seen circulation grow -- so the move to digital distribution platforms is less important to its well-being in the short term. The intended target is to have reached one million digital subscribers in three years' time, and an Android app is reportedly in the making to help achieve that goal.

Reading digital copies of The Economist on the iPhone and iPad is included for print-and-website subscribers (for £102 per year) and for Web-only subscribers (who pay £99 per year for that privilege). You can also buy a single copy of the weekly for £3.49 (or $5.99 or €4.99). The initial app download is free and includes a whopping five free articles.
Voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation is now available for Google Maps for Android in Australia and New Zealand. This feature works if you have a smartphone running Android 1.6 or newer.

Maps Navigation is integrated with Google Search and even Google Voice Search -- meaning that you don't even have to know your destination's name, you can just search for it either by typing or speaking. Walking navigation is also supported. When in this mode, your phone will vibrate when you need to make a turn. You can use the vibration alongside the voice guidance, or turn one of them off altogether.

To use Maps Navigation, you need to go to the Android Market and install (or update) Google Maps on your Android 1.6+ smartphone.

Google Maps Navigation now available in Australia and New Zealand originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. This feature will only be accessible for owners of devices running Android 2.2 or newer and iOS 3.0 or newer (including the iPad). The only language supported at first will be English, with more options to come in the future. A demo video of how the new feature works is waiting for you after the jump.
Continue reading Google Docs gets mobile editing support on Android 2.2 and iOS

Google Docs gets mobile editing support on Android 2.2 and iOS originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. This is not a new browser, mind you -- it uses IE's rendering engine and adds new features to it.

Tabs work exactly as you'd expect, and the tab bar is located between the address bar and the rendered page. Adding or closing a tab is done with the "+" or "X" signs that show up to the right of the tab bar. The incognito mode allows you to hide your browsing history, and there's even quick access to the search bar. A demo video of the app is available after the break, courtesy of WPCentral.

The two possible downsides for this app are that it only works in portrait mode for now, and that it's not free -- it costs $0.99. If neither of those is a dealbreaker for you, then search for Browser Plus in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace and install it.

Continue reading Browser Plus for Windows Phone 7 has tab support and incognito mode

Browser Plus for Windows Phone 7 has tab support and incognito mode originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST. This merges offline marketing with the mobile Web. Google is working with five brands -- Buick, Disney, Diageo, T-Mobile and Delta Airlines -- to offer print ads, movie posters and other media that will support Google Goggles.

When you take a picture of any such ad, using Google Goggles on your Android device or iPhone, Goggles will recognize the content and allow you to click through directly to a mobile destination from that brand.

It's clear that if this experiment proves successful by any metric, Google will expand it to include as many brands as possible. If you want to give it a try, you'll have to download Google Goggles from the Android Market or the Google Mobile App from the iTunes App Store. You can now rate places and write reviews from your phone. This is made easy by a rating widget that you can add to your homescreen. You can also rate and review places straight from any Place page -- these are in the process of being rolled out into Google mobile search results for Android and iPhone in the US.

Your ratings will personalize your search results by making them match your tastes more. If you've added friends using Hotpot on a computer, they will get recommendations of the places you like, and you will get recommendation of the places they like.

Google has promised that a Places app for the iPhone is on the way, complete with Hotpot support.

The official Google Voice application for the iPhone has finally arrived in the iTunes App Store. After more than a year from Apple's rejection of Google's first Voice app for the iPhone, almost ten months since Google responded with an HTML5-based mobile Web app, and about 6 weeks since it was reportedly approved by Apple, it's here.

The app has all the features you'd expect, including getting cheap rates for international calls, free texts to US numbers, voicemail transcription, and displaying your Google Voice number as your caller ID when making calls. It also has support for push notifications, to instantly alert you when you receive a new voicemail or text message. Google says that 'most' of the calls made through this app will be placed via Direct Access Numbers -- Google assigns a unique phone number to each person you call, which results in the app not needing to connect to the internet every time you place a call, thus making the whole calling experience much faster.

To use the new app, a Google Voice account and an iPhone with iOS 3.1 or newer are required.
The new 'sensor fusion' APIs that Google will introduce in Gingerbread include quaternion, rotation matrix, linear acceleration and gravity, and will allow the gyroscope to work together with the accelerometer and the magnetometer. The new sensor fusion technology is expected to be used in augmented reality, gaming, image stabilization and navigation -- but the possibilities are truly endless and it's up to developers to come up with exciting new things based on these APIs.

This has all been made possible thanks to InvenSense, the same company that's behind the MEMS gyroscope found in the Nintendo Wii MotionPlus controller. A demo video of what to expect is after the break, and it's part of a Google Tech Talk that InvenSense's David Sachs hosted back in August.
In fact, it's hard to name more than two apps that I use on a daily basis: Angry Birds is the first, of course, and BeejiveIM is the second.

I reviewed BeejiveIM for Android last month and came away with the conclusion that it's almost faultless. The interface is smooth, and you can customize colors and backgrounds to your heart's content. Integration to multiple networks is seamless, with the ability to send both audio and photo to any and all contacts. In fact, the only real fault is its price: at $9.99 it's not the cheapest app out there -- but imagine the money you would save by instant messaging from your phone instead of drinking coffee and reading a newspaper! Your friends and family would love you more, too -- can you put a price on that?

Then again, why fret about paying for software when you can get it for free... by entering this giveaway!

We have 10 BeejiveIM for Android licenses to give away -- just leave a comment and you'll be entered into the prize draw. Full terms and conditions follow after the break!
Continue reading BeejiveIM for Android giveaway

BeejiveIM for Android giveaway originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. While the previously rumored delay existed thanks to issues with Japanese characters not being displayed properly, this delay has its roots in something more important -- Wi-Fi connection issues that have been reported by many users of the golden master for the iPad.

What happens is that the iPad simply disconnects from a Wi-Fi network just a few minutes after it has connected. This is the most widely reported behavior of the bug, although some extreme cases, where users simply can't use Safari at all, have also been reported. Rumor has it that Apple has decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 until they fix this bug. Before that though, Apple may even release a second golden master build, with the bug fixed -- and that could happen as early as tomorrow. If another GM is pushed out, the final release may be delayed by at least a week. Either way, iOS 4.2 is on track to reach consumers before Thanksgiving.

It has just been discovered that it's possible to download any Windows Phone 7 XAP full application package directly from Microsoft's Marketplace server -- no need to use a Windows Phone 7 device or the Zune application. This is possible because the Zune application uses Atom XML feeds to get the applications' information, so it's fairly easy to grab a direct link to the full app package just by looking at the XML. Once you have the XAP, you can unzip it and get access to all the assets and resources that app uses. And, by using a tool such as Reflector, you may even get to peek at the app's source code. One thing of note is that the XAP can't be installed on a retail WP7 handset, although it can be used in an emulator.

It looks like Microsoft's solution to this for now is asking developers to use code obfuscation tools, such as DotFuscator, before submitting the apps into the Marketplace. Unfortunately that tool has only been out for a few days, so not many app developers have had the possibility to use it yet. Furthermore, the commercial edition of DotFuscator can be pretty expensive for those developing 99-cent apps in their basements.

The easy fix would be to have all the XAPs encrypted, but Microsoft hasn't said anything about when that will become reality -- a fix is coming, though. Until that happens, closed is apparently the new open.

The app itself hasn't changed in any way, it's just that you can now find it in the Android Market in the US regardless of what your carrier of choice is. Previously, it came pre-installed on some Verizon Android smartphones, and was only available to download if you were a Verizon customer.

Features of the app, as before, include plain Web search, image search, news, local business listings and reviews, instant answers for movies and flight search. Voice search is also supported. The app homepage nicely mimics Bing.com by showing the Bing image of the day, which has clickable points that will unearth trivia related to that specific image.

One of the platforms that Google has ignored is the biggest mobile OS of them all: Symbian. But there is a solution.

Tap2It is a free search app that uses Google search APIs and works on new Symbian devices such as the Nokia N8, E7, C7 and C6-01. And, you guessed it, searches instantly pop up as soon as you start typing, and they're refined with each key you press -- just like with Google Instant. Tap2It pulls in Web and local results, images, and videos. To use the local search functionality, you set your location manually (by entering a city or Zip code) when you first run the app. Of course you can change this data whenever you want to. If a business listing shows up in the search results, and has a phone number attached to it, you can dial that number just by tapping it.

Because Symbian doesn't yet have a system-wide portrait QWERTY keyboard, Tap2It brings its own implementation of a portrait QWERTY, that works well enough, especially considering that the instant results system makes sure there isn't much typing to do. Note though that for some reason, the app only works in portrait mode for now.

Tap2It is a free download from the Ovi Store. A demo video of the app's features is waiting for you after the break.

Bluefire Reader is an e-reader app for the iPhone and iPad that, along with letting you read e-books in EPUB and PDF formats, has a unique twist compared to its competitors -- support for Adobe DRM. Not only that, but starting today, it supports the unique DRM used by public libraries, so you can download free e-books from hundreds of public library websites, transfer them to your iDevice using iTunes, then read them in BlueFire reader. Previously, such e-books could not be read on an iPhone or iPad.

Intrigued yet? Interested even? Then head on over to Mobiputing for the detailed instructions on how to pull this off. Don't let the number of steps overwhelm you -- once you get the hang of it, you'll be transferring public library e-books to your iPhone or iPad in no time.

One thing to note is that the e-book services of public libraries behave pretty much like their paper book services -- a loan is only good for three weeks. After that time has passed since your download, you won't be able to read the book anymore. Also, each library only has a limited number of licenses for each e-book -- exactly like they only have a limited number of actual books on their real shelves. Once one license expires, someone else can use it. Sounds like a rather absurd system for the digital world, but hey, at least reading the books is free.

Bluefire Reader for iPhone and iPad lets you read public library e-books originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. It will also make multitasking possible on the iPad.

The update was reportedly scheduled to go live last week, but a bug was found that didn't allow Japanese characters to be displayed properly -- and so Apple had to fix it before releasing the update. The iOS 4.2 golden master, which was made available to developers last week, should have been released on October 26, so it looks like its availability had been delayed by the aforementioned bug too.
iOS 4.2 to become available on Friday? originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 19:00:00 EST. Both apps now support contact sync between Yahoo Contacts and your smartphone's address book.

Yahoo Messenger for Android finally has built-in support for video calls, a feature that Yahoo has announced a while back but that until now has only made its way into Yahoo's iOS apps. There are caveats though. First, you need to be running Android 2.2 or newer to get the video chat feature. Then, it requires the installation of the Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On to work. And finally, video is only supported on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G and the HTC Evo 4G at the moment -- support for more devices is reportedly in the works. The new Messenger app now also has enhanced photo and video sharing capabilities.

The new Yahoo Mail for Android brings support for multiple accounts and enhanced photo viewing. The app creates a gallery that's automatically populated with all the photos you've received or sent, so you don't have to go to each individual message to find a specific attachment.

Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On are available in the Android Market.
Yahoo Messenger for Android now does video calls, Yahoo Mail for Android updated originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. Obviously, like before, the app will allow you to take notes, photos, record audio, and access all your Evernote data. But it does bring many improvements and feature additions. In fact, Evernote says this is the single biggest leap in functionality any Evernote app has ever received in one release.

Evernote 2.0 for Android has a redesigned Home screen (as seen in the screenshot to the right). A search magnifying glass is now at the top of every screen inside the app (except the Home screen) so you can easily start a search no matter what you are doing. The improved Search function also lets you look for things near you based on your location and provides quick access to both previous and saved searches.

New views and more options have become available when viewing a note. Sorting and browsing have been made easier. Sorting now works offline and you can group your notes by notebook, location, or month. If you tap and hold a note in a note list you get a menu that has options such as Edit, Delete, get Note info, Email, Map view, Tagging. A header bar has also been added to make it simple to switch among searches, notes, tags, and notebooks.
