It's no secret that Notational Velocity is my favorite Mac note-taking application. It synchronizes with the SimpleNote online service, which means you can access your notes on your Mac, iPhone, online, and, if you store your notes in a folder that is in your Dropbox account, on a plethora of iOS plain text editing applications. It's made for speed, letting you find what you need instantly, make your edits, and get out. No fuss, no muss.

But what if you took the simple but powerful platform of Notational Velocity, and started adding some amazing features like Markdown, Textile and MultiMarkdown support (with a preview window to see your formatting), a widescreen layout, the ability to hide the notes panel, and some very nice stylistic improvements? The result is a fork of Notational Velocity by Brett Terpstra called Notational Velocity ALT, and it's a thing of beauty.

At this point I have to tell you that I've been lucky enough to use Brett's software for years now. In addition to writing software, Brett's a blogger for TUAW, a sister site of Download Squad, and when I was writing for TUAW I was lucky enough to get involved with using the Mac text editor TextMate with a bundle Brett wrote. He built it to allow writers to write for Blogsmith -- the CMS that runs TUAW and Download Squad -- using Markdown, but with a bunch of added features to make the writer more efficient, and their life easier. It's brilliant software, and it's what I'm using to compose this post.

I'm sharing this because it illustrates that Brett's role of writer puts him in a position to really understand the headaches writers run into, but his role as a coder empowers him to solve those headaches.

Notational Velocity ALT is already the best note taking app I've ever used, but what excites me even more is that Brett's plan is to make it not just a fantastic note taking app, but a fantastic text editor optimized for people who write online. I'm looking forward to the day when I write everything I intend to post online in Notational Velocity ALT, and that day may not be terribly far away.

Based on what Brett has already done with Notational Velocity ALT, and what he's done writing software for writers, this software's future is very, very bright.

Notational Velocity ALT, the supremo Mac note-taking tool, goes 1.0 originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 12 Dec 2010 14:24:00 EST.
wunderlist is a minimalistic, pretty to-do list manager. Here's a quick rundown of what it can and can't do:

Pros:

Looks: It looks quite pretty. You can change the background, and it's generally just lovely.

Simplicity: That can also be considered a bad thing, I guess, but wunderlist is very simple. There are no nested tasks, for example.

Multiple lists: You can easily create extra lists for different contexts and move items between lists.

Fast search: Search is "live" and updates as you type. It's very snappy, but I only tested it with a tiny list.

Quick filtering: There are quick links to see tasks due today, tomorrow, within the next seven days, etc. You can also filter by "starred" tasks.

Online sync: When you save the file, it's automatically synced to wunderlist's online server. Then you can run wunderlist on another computer and keep working on the same task list. I love this feature.

Cross-platform: It works with OS X and Windows at this point. The Windows version doesn't feel "native" at all, though - it feels like a Mac app running in a Windows window.

Cons:

Simplicity: There's no smart text processing. If I tell it "Buy food tomorrow," it doesn't realize "tomorrow" is a deadline. It's the same for "Talk to Josh @work" - it doesn't make a list with "@work" (or add to it if it exists).

No documentation: I know people never read it, but come on, technical writers have to earn a living somehow! Seriously though, I would expect at least an HTML page (other than the "Features" page, which is marketing).

No mobile app (yet): An iOS app is coming, but there's no talk of Android yet.

No global hotkey: And that's the deal-breaker for me; as I've said elsewhere, quickly capturing ideas and to-do items is crucial for me. There is currently no way to bring up wunderlist's window with a hotkey.

Bottom line: It's nice, if you like pretty software, and it shows a great deal of promise for the future (if the "cons" above are addressed).

wunderlist is a cross-platform free to-do list manager originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. Though I'm in that situation far less often than I'd prefer, when I do need to measure the relative performance of two different Macs, I turn to Xbench.

Xbench is a free performance benchmarking utility that measures the following items: CPU, Threads, Memory, Quartz Graphics (2D), OpenGL Graphics (3D), User Interface, and Disk. For a full list, including the sub-categories of what Xbench measures, check the bottom of the Xbench homepage.

When you run the app you can run all or only some of the tests, however running the entire suite only takes a few minutes. When you're done, you're presented with a report showing how your machine performed in each area.

By itself, it isn't that interesting, but if you send your report to Xbench's website using the Submit button, you can then compare it against other machines' scores.

Xbench performance benchmarking for Macs originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 20 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. Flight Control, the challenging and addictive plane-landing game that's been hugely popular on the iPhone and iPad, is now coming to your desktop. Mac and PC users can play Flight Control via Valve's Steam gaming service for a mere $5. The desktop version loses the elegance of touchscreen controls, but it does include an exclusive desktop-only "stunt" map.

The Steam version of Flight Control has its own leaderboards, so it's doubtful that your Game Center rankings will transfer over. It will also have its own achievements to unlock, too, so that adds an incentive for folks who've already played Flight Control on their iDevices to try out the desktop version.

With Apple pulling AirPrint support just before the release of Mac OS 10.6.5, an opportunity has opened up for developers to one-up Apple with third-party tools that can share your printers over Wi-Fi for your iOS 4.2 devices. Our Apple-crazed brothers and sisters over at TUAW have put two offerings, Printopia and FingerPrint, through their paces.

They found that both products essentially allow printers that don't support AirPrint natively to be made available for any iDevice running iOS 4.2, by modifying their Bonjour service broadcast to include an "AirPrint enabled marker." iOS 4.2 devices can then detect and print to most printers, but not all, mainly based on host-driver requirements.

The ten-dollar Printopia, however, takes things a step further, by sharing non-Bonjour-enabled, local USB-connected printers in the same fashion. Support for printers that are password protected and that can duplex print is also included. But that's not all, as Printopia also provides printing to PDF files on your Mac and direct-to-Dropbox file sharing, straight from the print dialog on iOS 4.2.

Whichever program you intend to test, the $7.99 FingerPrint or the $9.95 Printopia, you now have options other than modifying system files and implementing pre-release code to get your AirPrint on.

From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog. Have a flick through the gallery below if you want to explore the Android app.
Recording to open formats, Rainbow now supports both audio and video recording on Windows, and audio recording on Linux, meaning it's not just Mac users that can get in on the action. The update also brings with it numerous bug fixes and the ability to specify custom recording resolutions, bit rate, encoding quality and channels through JavaScript. Mozilla has also added preliminary support for writing multiplexed media frames to a websocket. [Wesley, stop speaking gobbledegook! -Ed]

If you want to record video or audio direct from your browser, Rainbow, although still a little rough around the edges, is certainly worth checking out if you're a Firefox 4 user. Download Rainbow 0.2 for Firefox 4 here.
Mozilla Labs Rainbow updated to version 0.2 -- now works with Windows and Linux as well as Mac OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
The bods over at MacTech have been putting the Microsoft Business Unit's latest Mac offering, Office 2011, though its metaphorical paces, and have found that, on the whole, it's significantly faster than its previous siblings Office 2008 and 2004. App launches are around 70% faster from cold and 98% faster on relaunch, a noticeable and welcome improvement for the user. That's not all, common tasks in the big four applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, have also been streamlined giving an average speed up of between 36 and 129%.

The usual disclaimer is in force here -- measured by a stop watch, might not be accurate, etc -- but MacTech was adamant that on the face of it, the whole Office suite for Mac has seen real-world speed improvements that directly affect the user, something to which we can personally attest. Impressive stuff indeed, and when combined with ditching Entourage for Outlook, Office 2011 makes a worthy upgrade.
Given that many security vulnerabilities revolve around Flash player exploits these days, having the browser check for Flash updates and taking the burden off the user is probably a very good thing. The update also brings with it the latest 1.9.0 version of Mozilla Gecko rendering engine, which should bring rendering improvements as well as fixing some critical security bugs.

The update is recommended for all Camino users, and as always, is available for free from Caminobrowser.org.

While you can enable AirPrint on OS X manually by copying files from one of the pre-release builds of 10.6.5, there's now an easier and faster way to do it -- AirPrint Hacktivator. A quick and easy way to activate AirPrint without having to hunt down, backup, and replace the three files required manually -- the simple tool requires just one click to 'Hacktivate' and importantly, 'De Hacktivate' AirPrint. The tool makes a backup of your current files before replacing them, meaning reverting back to stock should be plain sailing if required. Of course all this is at your own risk and if you're at all unsure about the tool, you can always do it manually.

Head on over to Netputing for the details, or download AirPrint Hacktivate 1.3 now and get your iOS wireless printing on.
Apple has released the latest version of its Snow Leopard operating system, Mac OS 10.6.5, which fixes a whole slew of little bugs and quirks, from improving Exchange support to fixing printer issues to syncing Address Book with Google Contacts. Snow Leopard users can get OS X 10.6.5 now by running Software Update.

The complete release notes -- much more thorough than Apple's usual vague "improves speed and stability' note -- are up on Apple.com, but here are some of the highlights:

Apple Mail should now play more nicely with Microsoft Exchange servers.

You can now use SSL with iDisk, to securely transfer your files to and from the cloud.

Address Book contacts can now be dragged to iCal without issues, and they can also be synced to Google Calendar/Google Contacts.

On the hardware compatibility front: Bluetooth now works more reliably for Apple's Magic Trackpad, third-party displays that use InstaPort should now work, and HP printers now work with Apple's Airport Extreme.

Although this isn't listed in the release notes, The Mac Observer reports that gamers will want to download Mac OS X 10.6.5 right away, because it's required for "high-end graphics options" in some games, including World of Warcraft.
Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6.5, with tons of little fixes originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST.
Not more than two weeks out of the gate, Microsoft has already released its first update for Office 2011 for Mac. A bug fix release, the update will take 110.5 MB of your precious hard disk space, but should stop unexpected quits and hangs. Some specific applications get a bit more attention -- Excel gets an update to its handling of revised data for formulae, plus improvements to the FORMAT macro command reliability. Inserting equations into that valuable, time consuming report should be a bit more stable in Word. PowerPoint gets improved compatibility with 2007 and 2010 creations. Last but not least, the fledgling Outlook for Mac also gets some attention, with better Keychain integration for new account imports and reliability fixes to make sure deletions across multiple IMAP accounts stay deleted.

Pretty dry all round, but what do you expect from a point release to Office? It's a free update for all those with Office 2011 for Mac and is available through Microsoft Autoupdate or direct from the Microsoft Download Center.

Here at DownloadSquad, we're pretty heavy users of screenshot software -- whether it be an operating system's built-in tools, or a third-party app, taking screenshots forms part of our day-to-day routine. We've covered the PC version of Snagit extensively in the past, but now that the beta version of Snagit for Mac has hit release candidate it's time to take a look through what you can expect.

Screen capture

The main interface of Snagit revolves around a slide-out tab, which can be docked to one or other side of your screen for easy access. On the tab we've got the all-in-one capture button that invokes a unified screen capture mode. From there you get an intuitive interface that allows you to pretty much capture anything on your screen. Whether it's the whole screen, the whole window, the contents of a window including scrolling capture, or just a single pane in a window -- such as the live message view in Mail or just the list of emails pane -- it's all possible with the all-in-one capture. If you want to capture something more specific without having to edit it, then you can just drag-to-capture using the large yellow crosshairs. In fact, there's almost nothing static you can't capture with Snagit, save from Snagit itself, which can be excluded from any capture in the settings.
Continue reading Snagit for Mac comes out of beta -- First hands on

Snagit for Mac comes out of beta -- First hands on originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. Adobe has brought its once Windows-only professional audio authoring suite, Audition, to the Mac platform with the release of a public beta. For those of you who've missed Audition in the past, it's Adobe's solution for recording, mixing, editing, and mastering audio and vocal tracks -- an answer to Apple's Logic Studio, Avid Technology's Pro Tools, and others.

Bringing Audition to OS X enables Adobe to compete directly with Apple's aforementioned professional audio mastering suite and reach another side of the creative industry: those who customarily use Macs. Adobe is actively encouraging users to download and test Audition on Apple's desktop OS, so if you're at all creative and fancy trying out something that's a step up from GarageBand, then head on over to Adobe Labs and get your download on.
Adobe Audition for Mac beta now available originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. If you're a blogger, a designer, or just someone who uses a lot of images from Flickr, you might want to check out ViewFinder. ViewFinder is a Mac app that offers speedy searches of Flickr, using tags, titles and descriptions. It even lets you limit your search to Creative Commons-licensed images, and automatically generates attributions for you, so you can properly credit the work you download.

Viewfinder also has Keynote integration (for Keynote '08 and above), for folks who like to use Flickr photos in their presentation slides. You can drop Flickr photos right into Keynote with no mess, instead of downloading and opening the files and trashing them when you're done.

Viewfinder carries a
£15 introductory price -- that's roughly 25 US dollars -- but it could easily be worth the cost for people whose workflows depend heavily on Flickr. If you want to test it out, the free demo has no time limit, but it only allows 2 downloads per launch, and it delays each download by 30 seconds.
If you've switched over to the Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac, and you don't love the new look of Skype chat, there might be an easy fix. Skype 5 Mini is a simple chatstyle swap that cuts a lot of the whitespace out of Skype's new default chat appearance, letting you fit more text into your window.

Mini is the Lego to the default's ages-3-and-up Duplo. The first thing you'll notice about Mini is that it drops the clownishly large font size down to something reasonable. The next big thing is that the View Earlier Messages bar at the top has been made a lot more space-efficient, and all the options fit on one line now. This doesn't fix some of the other complaints people have had about the new Skype, though, like the somewhat scattered UI elements -- searching for important functions and settings is no fun for the novice user -- but it does make Skype's text chat a lot more tolerable.
The OS X version also gets some Mac-only perks, though, including a nice new single-window UI and Address Book integration.

The contact list (now attached as a sidebar to the main calling window) will grab all the Address Book contacts for whom you've added phone numbers, and let you call, IM or SMS them, even when they're offline. Meanwhile, a new call control bar floats above your other windows, so you can quickly pause, mute or hang up a call, even while you're in another app. Of course, the most-hyped new feature is group video calling, which will work with up to 10 people, but all participants must be running Skype 5 (on Mac or Windows).

One caveat about upgrading to 5.0, though: it breaks some Skype plug-ins, so you might have to downgrade again if you're running any hacks or add-ons you can't live without.

Skype 5.0 Beta now available for Mac, with group video calling and Address Book support originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 11:45:00 EST. TweetDeck's User Streams Preview introduced real-time Twitter streams to anyone who was willing to beta test, and now TweetDeck v0.36 is bringing it to the masses. This release merges the User Streams Preview with the "original" branch of the app, giving all users the option to view their friends' tweets in real time.

Real-time is on by default, so make sure to turn it off in preferences if you'd rather receive your tweets the old-fashioned way. If you do decide to go the real-time route, you may also want to adjust your popup notification settings to avoid getting spammed when tweets start coming in at warp speed.
TweetDeck's official blog says there's also a mysterious "one more thing" in this release, supposedly enabling some kind of magical "cross-platform TweetDeck communication."

This update is also crucial because it supports Twitter's new system of numbering tweets, codenamed "Snowflake." Apps that don't support Snowflake will break after November 24th, so current TweetDeck users should make sure to snag v0.36 in the coming weeks.
Apple recently let loose an update for iPhoto '11, which should prevent the database corruption bug that a few vocal users experienced upon firing up the new version for the first time. It's a pretty serious error if you happen to lose your entire photo library just because iPhoto has to "upgrade your library," so let's hope Apple's put this one to bed. Still, if you haven't upgraded yet, it might be worth making a good backup of your photo library just in case.

Get the update through the automatic built-in tool, or direct from Apple.
