From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog. Have a flick through the gallery below if you want to explore the Android app.
Recording to open formats, Rainbow now supports both audio and video recording on Windows, and audio recording on Linux, meaning it's not just Mac users that can get in on the action. The update also brings with it numerous bug fixes and the ability to specify custom recording resolutions, bit rate, encoding quality and channels through JavaScript. Mozilla has also added preliminary support for writing multiplexed media frames to a websocket. [Wesley, stop speaking gobbledegook! -Ed]

If you want to record video or audio direct from your browser, Rainbow, although still a little rough around the edges, is certainly worth checking out if you're a Firefox 4 user. Download Rainbow 0.2 for Firefox 4 here.
Mozilla Labs Rainbow updated to version 0.2 -- now works with Windows and Linux as well as Mac OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST.
Let me just come right out and say it: TeamViewer is the best remote control application for Windows PCs today. I've tried numerous apps, and nothing comes close to TeamViewer's performance on a WAN. For LAN situations, Windows Remote Desktop rocks. But when you've got the whole wide Internet between you and the computer you'd like to control, nothing beats TeamViewer. I use it several times per week, for extended sessions (hours on end), and it's always a joy to use. So yes, I'm a rabid fan, and I'm not ashamed.

And now, TeamViewer has announced a new beta for version 6. If you use TeamViewer 5, you'll notice the look and feel is different. But changes are more than skin-deep:

Custom QuickSupport is a feature that lets you connect to existing customers much more quickly, without getting their ID and password newly every time.

QuickJoin is a new feature that lets you send the session data to participants beforehand. This is great for presentations - the participants connect to your computer, and not vice versa. You no longer need to enter the data for each of the participants manually.

Reconnection after reboot makes sure TeamViewer will re-establish the connection even after the remote computer went down and came back up.

There are several other options; if you're not using TeamViewer yet, you really should start. But remember this is still a beta, so if you use it to control nuclear reactors or a personal army of killer robots, you may want to hold off on the upgrade.

TeamViewer Beta 6 is now out, remote control freaks rejoice originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. Ubuntu certainly gets the lion's share of attention when it comes to Linux distributions, but Linux Mint has been offering a sleek, simplified Ubuntu/Debian experience for years. With the release of Linux Mint 10, a boatload of new features and a shiny new default theme make it well worth checking out if you've been searching for a new distro to try.

Like Ubuntu 10.10, Mint now makes it easy to get common multimedia codecs working after you finish your install -- just click the "Add" button on the welcome screen. Mint's signature Menu system has been improved, and makes finding, launching, and installing apps an absolute breeze. The Software and Update managers have been tweaked as well, with better categorical organization and the option to permanently hide updates for specific packages.

Mint 10 still offers a wide array of popular apps from the get-go, including Firefox, Pidgin, Gwibber, Transmission, and many more. The Mint Web server seems to be struggling a bit this morning, so if you need direct links to the official DVD torrents, here they are:

TweetDeck's User Streams Preview introduced real-time Twitter streams to anyone who was willing to beta test, and now TweetDeck v0.36 is bringing it to the masses. This release merges the User Streams Preview with the "original" branch of the app, giving all users the option to view their friends' tweets in real time.

Real-time is on by default, so make sure to turn it off in preferences if you'd rather receive your tweets the old-fashioned way. If you do decide to go the real-time route, you may also want to adjust your popup notification settings to avoid getting spammed when tweets start coming in at warp speed.
TweetDeck's official blog says there's also a mysterious "one more thing" in this release, supposedly enabling some kind of magical "cross-platform TweetDeck communication."

This update is also crucial because it supports Twitter's new system of numbering tweets, codenamed "Snowflake." Apps that don't support Snowflake will break after November 24th, so current TweetDeck users should make sure to snag v0.36 in the coming weeks.

Most commercial products run a fairly set course; you get Microsoft Office 1.5, then 1.6, 3.0, 4.0, all the way up to office 2010 (For Windows, at least). It's a fairly orderly progression, with version numbers rising over time - pretty easy to follow.

Open-source projects are a different beast, however. When enough developers don't like the direction a project is going, they sometimes just create a fork and go on developing their own product. Sometimes projects have to fork for legal reasons, and sometimes it's a business decision, too.

The bottom line is that if you could plot the Linux timeline, it would look more like a crazy family tree than like an orderly progression of versions. And what do you know, one Donjan Rodic has gone and done just that, in the form of the GNU/Linux distro timeline.

Since this is an SVG file, it's not just a static image, and is capable of all sorts of aweosme: you can use Ctrl-F to search for a specific distro, and when you click a distro's name, you are transported to its home page.

Of course, since this is such a nerdy project, it wasn't produced entirely by hand. Donjan created an application just for creating the map, and then went ahead and open-sourced it. So... who wants to use it to create a timeline of all Web browsers?

The Linux distro timeline is an extensive family tree of all things Linux originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 14:20:00 EST.

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that the Unity shell currently used in Ubuntu's netbook edition will become the default user interface for Ubuntu's main desktop edition as well, starting with the next version of the operating system. Unity became Ubuntu's netbook UI with the release of the current version of the OS, 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is set to be released before the end of April 2011, and will represent a significant milestone in Ubuntu's history. It will be the first version of the OS not to ship with the Gnome shell as the default UI. Gnome will continue to be the underlying framework, as Unity is based on it, but the interface layer will look nothing like Gnome.

The reasons for this shift are many, but consist mostly of differences of opinion between Ubuntu's leadership and the upstream developers of Gnome. According to Shuttleworth, Ubuntu tried to participate in the Gnome shell design process but found many philosophical differences that were impossible to reconcile. They decided to go their own way and improve Unity to the point at which it will become a viable replacement for the Gnome shell.

Gnome's rejection of global menus as well as performance issues with Gnome's new Mutter window manager are also to blame for Ubuntu's change of direction. A key factor was also multi-touch, and Shuttleworth's clear belief that extensive support for it should be built into the OS. Unity is already multi-touch-enabled in Ubuntu 10.10 but the plan is to bring richer touch interaction to the desktop with Ubuntu 11.04.

This move could anger at least some open source enthusiasts, but it probably shouldn't. Ubuntu is clearly trying to further differentiate itself in a Linux world filled with UIs and user experiences that are extremely similar. It is a risky bet, but Shuttleworth says that developers need not worry because fragmentation can be avoided by using FreeDesktop.org to ensure that desktop integration mechanisms are standardized and interoperable. Whether that will be enough to alleviate all possible issues or silence the critics of this decision remains to be seen.

The standard Gnome shell will continue to be available as a non-default installation option.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal - Unity replaces Gnome as default shell originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 21:00:00 EST. If you already use Opera, it should have informed you that there's a recommended update available, or it may have downloaded and installed it by itself (if you previously allowed it to do that without asking).

There are no new bells and whistles in this version, but there are many security enhancements, bug fixes and various improvements. Among the worst offenders that have been squashed in 10.63 are Opera Link (the bookmark sync feature) freezing on startup, 100% CPU usage seen when starting Opera, some JavaScript-related issues including one on Yahoo Mail, and, my favorite, a bug that, when reloading a page, opened multiple download windows that couldn't be closed.

Opera's engineers are hard at work on the next big version, 10.70, which will be filled with new features when it lands. By the time that happens though, Google's Chrome may have already overtaken it in terms of version numbers (since it's already well on its way to 8). Whether that's good, bad, or completely irrelevant is for you to decide.
Opera 10.63 is out, fixes bug after bug after bug originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST. As the name suggests, this is a Linux-only app. You could always use Ubuntu (or similar) under VMware, though, which is what I did to bring you this review! Now on with the show.

FreetuxTV, in essence, is a simple app that plays any TV or radio stream from around the Web. It comes bundled with lots of different channel groups, each one containing channels from a specific country, or broadcast by a single company. There's a lot more French channels than any other (presumably because the main developer is French) but it's easy enough to add your own channels if they're not listed.

Once you've added some channel groups, pick a channel and start watching! Not every channel works, and sometimes it takes an awfully long time for an image to appear -- but can you really complain about free TV? The video quality is generally OK, but highly variable -- FreetuxTV is just a go-between, simply displaying whatever stream the broadcaster pumps out.

In fact, despite being a great tool that collates hundreds of TV channels, the only feature of FreetuxTV is that you can record TV shows. Just hit the red circle and whatever you're watching is recorded. By default it saves the raw stream, but you can configure it to transcode to either Theora and Ogg Vorbis, or H.264 and MPGA. Again, most of the streams are such low quality that you'd be better off finding a recording elsewhere, but it's still a nice option to have.

Ever since it was first announced, Ubuntu One has drawn comparisons to Dropbox. With cross-platform desktop apps and mobile versions for iOS, Android, and Blackberry, Dropbox has a bit of an edge. A Ubuntu One Windows app has been talked about for quite some time, and the Wiki now states that a beta version is coming soon -- which should help close the gap.

There's also the recently-announced Ubuntu One music app, which is currently available for testing on Android. Now branded Ubuntu One Mobile, its cloud-to-device streaming will cost $3.99 per month or $39.99 for a year. Unless I'm reading the blog post incorrectly, that's just to stream your music from the cloud to your phone.

As I pointed out last time, 7digital -- who power the U1 music store -- already provide free apps to stream all the music you purchase at no additional charge. Apps like ZumoCast allow iOS users to do this for free, so I wonder: would you be willing to pay $4 a month just to stream music? I wouldn't.
One I've discovered is the recently-overhauled PenguSpy.

PenguSpy offers a categorized collection of both free and commercial games for Linux -- from platformers to RTS, board games to racing sims. Each game's detail page includes a synopsis, gameplay video, and the obligatory rating.

While the total number of games is relatively small at the moment, there are plenty of good titles like Torcs, QuakeLive, and Glest (and several others from our list of 25 free, cross-platform games). If you run a Linux OS like Ubuntu on your computer and you're looking for some quality gaming downloads, head on over to PenguSpy.

PenguSpy makes finding great Linux games easy originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST.
The team at Ubuntu decided to make today a fun Friday, releasing Ubuntu 10.10 RC (Maverick Meerkat) for users to play with over the weekend. The full stable release is due to release on October 10th, so if you don't feel like running the outlandish risk of using a beta version, sarcasm intended, then you don't have long to wait for the real deal.

Changes and additions in this version are plenty, including an upgrade to Linux kernel version 2.6.35. For Netbook Edition, the Unity interface is now default, and desktop users get a revamped Ubuntu Software Center. Shotwell seems to have replaced F-Spot as the default photo-management tool on both. Kubuntu comes with global upgrades to version 4.5 (with a promise of 4.5.1 "soon"), and Rekonq as the new default browser. In Xubuntu, Totem's been replaced by Parole as the default media player, Xfburn is the new default burning app, and Gnome-Task-Manager got ditched in favor of Xfce4-Taskmanager.

The list of known issues is pretty decent, so be sure to go through them first to avoid surprises.

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat RC now available, full release coming soon! originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 05:49:00 EST.

Got an HTC Desire, Nexus One, or Dell Streak burning a hole in your pocket? Wish there was something you could run on it besides Android? Probably not, but for those of you out there who just can't stand running stock anything on your devices, why not take the plunge and install Meego?

Anybody else think that the Dell Streak pictured on the Meego Wiki page could use a serious screen cleaning?

Unlike Wine, this implementation of Direct3D under Gallium3D is an actual, native port of the DirectX APIs. There's no emulation involved -- Gallium3D just acts as a 'very thin wrapper,' allowing developers easy access to Direct3D's goodies.

Luca Barbieri, the developer behind this new code commit, has a lot to say about Direct3D versus OpenGL, which might pain some open source advocates: "Thanks to a very clean and well-though design done from scratch, the Direct3D 10/11 APIs are vastly better than OpenGL and can be supported with orders of magnitude less code and development time."

Then speaking about why Direct3D will be the graphics API of choice, when developing for Linux, Luca continued the barrage: "A mature Direct3D 10/11 implementation is intrinsically going to be faster and more reliable than an OpenGL implementation, thanks to the dramatically smaller API and the segregation of all nontrivial work to object creation that the application must perform ahead of time."

As I understand it, Wine can't yet take advantage of this new development -- but as it stands, you can now leap right in and start programming a 3D Linux application using Mesa and the Direct3D state tracker.
Direct3D 10 and 11 API now natively supported by Linux via Gallium3D originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST.
There's a new local root exploit, and it seems like Ksplice has yet again managed to get their <strike>advertisement</strike> fix onto the front page of Slashdot. Normally such an arcane bug wouldn't be an issue, but the example exploit leaves an open backdoor even after the bug has been patched -- lovely.

It's an escalation exploit, so a user still needs to gain local user access to the system -- but still, you're encouraged to update any and all 64-bit Linux systems that you own, especially if they're public, shared servers.

64-bit Linux kernel exploit in the wild, allows local user root escalation originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST.
Ubuntu 10.10 is due to arrive next month (10/10, of course), and if you've been waiting for Canonical to make the jump from alpha to beta before taking an early peek at it -- today's the day! The download page is up, torrents are seeded, and you can finally get your paws on the Maverick Meerkat beta.

The new release features refined visuals from the background to the default icons. The simplified installer also now features an option to download an MP3 decoder during the setup process -- giving users the ability to play back the popular audio format from the get-go. There's also a slick new audio menu which display album artwork and playback controls.

Multi-touch support has been added and the Unbuntu Software Center refined, and some of the default applications have been replaced as well. Ubuntu Netbook Edition has also been overhauled, and now sports the new Unity dock and a snazzy home screen.
If we're to believe this new job posting over at Valve, reports of Steam for Linux's death may have been greatly exaggerated. As you can see, Valve is on the hunt for a senior engineer who can port Windows games to Linux.

If you recall VP Doug Lombardi's actual words, he never said Steam for Linux was dead -- only that they weren't currently working on it. Maybe that's because they just hadn't found the right man or woman for the job yet. As Sebastian pointed out to me, this doesn't necessarily mean "Steam for desktop Linux" -- it could just as easily have to do with embedded gaming.

Whatever the case may be, the news is certainly a bit more encouraging than Lombardi's interview.
Well, so much for hints, Linux users. While it initially looked as though Valve's gaming behemoth was headed your way when the Mac client arrived, that may not actually be the case.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Valve's VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi has bad news for Linux gamers: "There's no Linux version that we're working on right now."

Sorry to take the Steam out of your locomotives. But hey, look on the bright side -- Lombardi didn't say they weren't going to work on it in the future or that they had never worked on a Linux version. If you like reading into things, his phrasing leaves plenty of room for speculation.
Meego -- the Linux effort headed up by Intel and Nokia -- recently scored a fairly major win, with GENIVI selecting it as the platform of choice for in-vehicle infotainment. In case you're not familiar with GENIVI, it's a consortium comprised of several high-profile companies including GM, BMW, Hyundai, Intel, Nokia, NVidia, ARM, Freescale, and many others.

On GENIVI's about page, they speak of "developing a reusable, open source IVI platform" with the hope of driving "broad adoption of [a] development platform." Enter Meego, which now appears poised to face off against Android on an even wider variety of upcoming devices.

Just days ago, the Meego IVI version was made available to the public. If you've got a car PC (or you plan on knocking one together), you can now download the remix and give it a go. As you'd expect with an IVI OS, Meego supports road-friendly tech like Bluetooth and Navit. Fennec is included for web browsing and Totem currently handles audio/video duties.

Right now, the Meego IVI interface isn't quite as polished as the netbook version, but it's a nice start and should be a nice fit for small-screen in-dash systems.

If your luck is better than mine, feel free to send over some screenshots -- I couldn't get Meego IVI to do anything other than boot and freeze at the desktop, and it wouldn't install.

Meego in-vehicle infotainment remix now available for download originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 11:30:00 EST.
A while back, I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop I had lying around. While the system feels quite slick, it does suffer from some typical Linux woes, one of which is a complete inability to recover from Suspend or Hibernate. In other words, I can only cold boot the system; there's no way to suspend it.

After googling around, I came to the conclusion that this is a fairly tough problem to solve, and I decided to give up. Since security isn't critical for this system, I've configured Gnome to log on automatically for me (through Gnome's Login Screen Settings).

That went a long way towards resolving the problem, since Mint boots quite fast. I can now just turn the laptop on when I want to use it, and it's ready to go within less than a minute; that's not bad.

However, one more niggling problem remained: even after logging on, it kept prompting me to enter my password to the "Gnome keyring" so that it could connect to my Wi-Fi network. This was really annoying; it was almost like having to log on manually (because I still have to enter the password, wait for it to connect, etc.).

Continue reading Linux tip: How to unlock the Gnome keyring at login (and get "almost-hibernation")

Linux tip: How to unlock the Gnome keyring at login (and get "almost-hibernation") originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST.
