To use the service, you have to have an iPhone 4, an iPad or a fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2. If you do, you'll be able to locate your device on a map, lock it, display a message of your choosing on your device's display (so presumably someone who finds it may return it), play a sound, or, if all else fails, remotely wipe your data. The service works from any browser or any other iOS device that has the Find My iPhone, iPod touch and iPadd app installed.
Now that you've finished installing the shiny, new iOS 4.2.1 update on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch it's time to jailbreak that bad boy -- assuming you're in to that sort of thing. The DevTeam is on the ball, and there's already a compatible redsn0w jailbreak available for you to run on your Windows or Mac system. As always, jailbreak at your own risk -- you could brick your device, and nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Let the iTunes-powered updating begin: iOS 4.2.1 is here, and ready to install on your Apple device. If you own an iPhone 3, 3GS, 4, iPod touch 2nd gen or newer, or an iPad, you're good to go. Among the big additions to iOS this time around: multitasking and app folder support for the iPad. There's also AirPlay and AirPrint for even more cord-free computing action on your handheld and Game Center integration is now live as well.

The full presser from Cupertino is available after the break.
Continue reading iOS 4.2.1 out today, brings multitasking to iPad

iOS 4.2.1 out today, brings multitasking to iPad originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 08:52:00 EST. Version 2.0 also brings with it integrated selling tools for the US, Germany and the UK, saved searches with automated alerts, improved keyword searching, and a new "Reminders" feature to "stay on top of your eBay activity." There are two separate apps available, one optimized for the iPad, and one for the iPhone. Both contain all the material from the print editions, but there are no fancy UI effects here, compared to other magazines -- it's all nice and subtle touches to make the reading experience enjoyable. Articles are also available in audio form, if you'd rather listen instead of read.

Unlike other major print publications, The Economist has seen circulation grow -- so the move to digital distribution platforms is less important to its well-being in the short term. The intended target is to have reached one million digital subscribers in three years' time, and an Android app is reportedly in the making to help achieve that goal.

Reading digital copies of The Economist on the iPhone and iPad is included for print-and-website subscribers (for £102 per year) and for Web-only subscribers (who pay £99 per year for that privilege). You can also buy a single copy of the weekly for £3.49 (or $5.99 or €4.99). The initial app download is free and includes a whopping five free articles.
Apple customers who are clamoring for iOS 4.2 shouldn't have much longer to wait. Today, Apple released a gold master of iOS 4.2.1 to developers, which should get the gold master software for iPhones and iPads back on the same version after a little snafu with the iPad version of the software last week. 4.2.1 just came out, and there's no changelog, so we don't know whether any features have been added yet, or whether this will actually be the version released to the public, leapfrogging over 4.2.

MacStories is reporting rumors of serious issues with audio and Exchange in iOS 4.2, and that 4.2.1 was release internally earlier this week as an urgent fix for those issues. The site also says that Apple employees were instructed to get testing done by this weekend, which points to a release early next week.
FireCore aim to have the first public beta out within the next two weeks, possibly even as early as next week, with the installer requiring 'no wires or USB drives,' just direct communication with the Apple TV. Once you've got aTV Flash (black) installed on your pocket media box, new apps and updates can be installed easily via a 'Maintenance' menu, making further expansion a trivial procedure.

Of course, Apple could easily wipe out the need for this kind of hackery simply by enabling apps on the Apple TV, but until then, developers like FireCore will attempt to make Apple's 'hobby' ever more useful. Hit the break for some video demos of aTV Flash (black) in action.
This feature will only be accessible for owners of devices running Android 2.2 or newer and iOS 3.0 or newer (including the iPad). The only language supported at first will be English, with more options to come in the future. Got an iPad, but bored of iOS? Fancy trying out Android, even though it's not designed for tablets? Well you might be in luck, as the team that brought you Bootlace and OpeniBoot for the iPhone and iPhone 3G has released a teaser of their open source iOS boot ROM alternative running on an iPhone 4 and the iPad. You can change your settings in the iPhone app to receive notifications for all mentions. To do the same for SMS, text "set mentions all" to Twitter.

Instant notifications for direct messages are also now available on iPhone, which joins SMS and BlackBerry as the only platforms to have them so far. The updated iPhone app is available in the App Store now.Twitter for Android and Twitter for Windows Phone will have this feature "soon," according to Twitter's blog.
Twitter introduces push notifications for mentions and direct messages originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 00:05:00 EST.

The official Google Voice application for the iPhone has finally arrived in the iTunes App Store. After more than a year from Apple's rejection of Google's first Voice app for the iPhone, almost ten months since Google responded with an HTML5-based mobile Web app, and about 6 weeks since it was reportedly approved by Apple, it's here.

The app has all the features you'd expect, including getting cheap rates for international calls, free texts to US numbers, voicemail transcription, and displaying your Google Voice number as your caller ID when making calls. It also has support for push notifications, to instantly alert you when you receive a new voicemail or text message. Google says that 'most' of the calls made through this app will be placed via Direct Access Numbers -- Google assigns a unique phone number to each person you call, which results in the app not needing to connect to the internet every time you place a call, thus making the whole calling experience much faster.

To use the new app, a Google Voice account and an iPhone with iOS 3.1 or newer are required.
We've reviewed Bluefire and shown you how to get borrowed e-books onto your iPhone, but there are two better and faster ways to accomplish this, without opening Adobe Digital Editions on your computer or syncing with iTunes. Whether these methods work depends on the e-book format your particular library uses, but they work with one of the most common formats, EPUB.
Continue reading Two quick ways to read library e-books on your iPhone or iPad with Bluefire

Two quick ways to read library e-books on your iPhone or iPad with Bluefire originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST.

Reeder, one of our must have apps for the iPad, has just received an update for iOS4.2. Finally, iPad users can take advantage of iOS4's multitasking capabilities, with Reeder able to complete its synchronization when running in the background. It's difficult to truly describe how useful this is going to be for users with large RSS lists, as it can take a good while to sync and cache all that content. To be able to do it in the background is certainly going to speed up our work flow in the mornings, if not yours.

Sharing via Facebook and Zootool has also been added into the mix, while several tweaks to user interaction have been made. Of course there's the obligatory list of bug fixes rolled in, including saving to Delicious using a Yahoo ID. As always this is a free update for existing users, but if you haven't tried Reeder for iPad and you're running the iOS4.2 GM, then now's the time to try one of the best RSS readers available.

Pulse News Reader, the popular mobile news reader app for iOS and Android, is now going free across all platforms in an effort to grab more users and, as a consequence, content partnerships. Alphonso Labs, having secured sizable venture capital funding, is attempting to turn the app into a viable business. By providing a mobile optimized solution for content consumption, they hope to switch to a content partnership model. Content providers will be able to highlight particular pieces of content within Pulse for a fee and, in doing so, hopefully drive traffic to their site. While content viewed in Pulse doesn't directly benefit page views for producers, the theory is that Pulse readers are more likely to share articles and drive new readers to the original site. At the moment, Pulse will only display what's already freely available as feeds, but by forging partnerships in this way, Pulse hopes to go beyond that.

While it might mean that more content is made available through the innovative Pulse News Reader in the near future, the immediate consequence is that Pulse is now free across all stores. So if you haven't tried it out yet, get downloading!
Users of the Facebook app for iOS can now access their privacy settings without firing up Safari. Following the update to version 3.2, you can tap the account button on the app's main screen to jump to Facebook's controls. The update also adds two-tap access to your Facebook profile settings and the Help Center -- also via the Web. As AppAdvice points out, native controls would have been a nicer addition, but at least the screens can be accessed without leaving the app now.
The iPad provides a fantastic opportunity for some really unique media consumption experiences. We've seen magazine-type apps like Flipboard and Pulse before, but there aren't any really good examples of novel music consumption on the iPad - until now. Aweditorium is certainly a unique and engaging experience, but it's difficult to really describe what it actually is. It's brought to you by the folks that brought you thesixtyone, a musical journey in your Web browser, but Aweditorium is more than that. If you take music discovery, video, commentary, art, lyrics, and prose, and throw it all together in a touchable, browsable interface, you're just about there -- 'Aural Happiness.'
Continue reading Aweditorium for iPad - How iTunes LP should have been

Aweditorium for iPad - How iTunes LP should have been originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. That gold master has just been made available to developers, for iPad only. With this problem out of the way, we're now looking at a likely Monday release for iOS 4.2.
One helpful tip to avoid confusion between the two different iOS 4.2 gold masters: the build number of the updated iPad-only gold master is the same as the previous one, but with a b added to the end, so make sure you download build number 8C134b for use on the iPad.
Apple releases new Gold Master for iOS 4.2, fixes iPad Wi-Fi bug originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST. With the latest update to Bump for iOS, you can pick any song in your iTunes library and send it to a friend via Bump. Don't get too excited, though: we're not talking about full-on file transfer, here. Bumping a song just lets your friend stream the entire track via YouTube or click an iTunes "buy" link.

Bump already lets you share photos and Address Book info, become instant friends on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, and even transfer money via PayPal. Photo sharing is apparently the most popular feature, though, so music is a logical next step.

Unfortunately, sharing your music files themselves won't fly for Bump under Apple's current terms of service and developer APIs, so users will have to make due with the clever YouTube streaming and iTunes Music Store combo.
In the meantime, though, downloading the new Evernote 3.4 also adds features you can use before iOS 4.2 comes out.

Perhaps the most useful new feature is multi-image select. Rather than importing one photo at a time into Evernote, you can now select up to five at once, either all in one note or spread out across separate ones. You'll find this new feature in the "Send To" menu item in your iPhone's camera roll. Location services for Evernote need to be turned on to enable multi-image select.

Audio note users will also be happy to hear that notes can now be as long as 90 minutes each, long enough to deal with most meetings, class notes, and interviews. Evernote also gets its own audio player with easy navigation, rather than opening Quicktime to play back notes. It even has play-pause buttons in the application dock, just like the ones Apple's iPod app uses.

All in all, this is a significant feature update that's worth downloading even before iOS 4.2 is released.

Evernote for iPhone and iPad updated with multi-photo select and 90 minute audio notes originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. While the previously rumored delay existed thanks to issues with Japanese characters not being displayed properly, this delay has its roots in something more important -- Wi-Fi connection issues that have been reported by many users of the golden master for the iPad.

What happens is that the iPad simply disconnects from a Wi-Fi network just a few minutes after it has connected. This is the most widely reported behavior of the bug, although some extreme cases, where users simply can't use Safari at all, have also been reported. Rumor has it that Apple has decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 until they fix this bug. Before that though, Apple may even release a second golden master build, with the bug fixed -- and that could happen as early as tomorrow. If another GM is pushed out, the final release may be delayed by at least a week. Either way, iOS 4.2 is on track to reach consumers before Thanksgiving.
