Along with pornography, it seems that online egg timers are a driving force for change and innovation on the Internet. I'm not sure there's any other way to explain the proliferation of egg timers. Granted, people may be using these timers for more than just eggs, but this burgeoning market segment never ceases to amaze and surprise me. My latest find is simply called Online Egg Timer, which is a great name for SEO.

The interface is dead-simple and very friendly, and it sports a friendly URL format as well. You can just go to www.online-eggtimer.com/90/120/240 to instantly start three timers: one for ninety seconds, one for two minutes, and one for four minutes.

Granted, the URL format could have been a tad friendlier if it allowed for other time units too, like CD allows for /2h4m15s. But Online Egg Timer does have one alarming advantage over CD: it emits a very loud ringing sound once the time is up.

Online Egg Timer is another slick, stylish timer originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 20 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST.

Yahoo has just launched Mafia Wars and FishVille, two games developed by Zynga, the company best known for FarmVille and its other games on the Facebook platform. In the past few months though, Zynga has shifted away from being tied exclusively to Facebook and has launched its games on Windows Live Messenger, MSN Games -- and now Yahoo.

Mafia Wars and FishVille will appear in Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Games, My Yahoo, Yahoo Pulse and Yahoo's browser toolbar. Starting the Zynga integration with just two games -- and not the most popular ones (where's FarmVille?) -- clearly means that Yahoo is in sort of a testing phase. If all goes well, expect to see more Zynga titles on Yahoo's properties soon.

The folks behind Pioneer One have been busy since the show's pilot release back in June, and it seems as though their hard work is beginning to pay off. The pilot was a campy success, having won Best Drama Pilot at the New York Television Festival -- but it won instant pseudo-historical status as well. It was the first science fiction drama series to be produced entirely off of donation-funding and released freely through torrent networks. Hundreds of thousands of views and five months later, the made-for-torrent drama series is set to move forward with the release of three new episodes, starting as early as mid-December.

Viewers can also expect to see a revised re-release of the pilot, in which one of the main roles has been recast. The upcoming episodes will comprise about half the expected first season -- of a projected four-season offering should the show's success continue. On that note, it's important to remember that Pioneer One, along with other free P2P community offerings like it, are only made possible by donations. So don't be afraid to donate if you like it, and be sure to catch the teaser trailer for the upcoming episodes after the break.

Continue reading Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes

Torrent-loving sci-fi drama Pioneer One landing soon with new episodes originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Apparently, it all started with a tweet from an "anonymous New York fashion PR", according to Frockwriter. That tweet was the cause for a lot of coverage in itself, until it was made public that many people in the fashion world had been invited to a Google party called "High Tech Fuses with High Fashion", that will take place on Wednesday. That certainly seems to confirm that Google is working on something fashion-related.

The word is that Google will launch Boutiques.com, a fashion site that will use image-recognition technology that Google got its hands on back when it acquired Like.com. Boutiques.com will apparently feature online shops selling merchandise from many designers and retailers, and will also sell the looks worn by celebrities and influencers.

Gizmodo has uncovered that Boutiques.com is owned by Like.com (also owned by Google) and this may be another small confirmation of the above being true. It would clearly make sense for Google to get into fashion e-commerce, because there's plenty of money to be made there. Whether or not that is what Google is doing, we're bound to know for sure in just a couple of days.

Boutiques.com, Google's fashion shopping site, may launch on Wednesday originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. For $24.99, it will let you share your Android device's data connection with your computer via USB. Unlike Google's free Android tethering app, Tether works on Android 1.5 and up (the built-in app started with Android 2.2).

Now, to readers outside the US, Tether may sound like a ripoff. American cell carriers are notorious for blocking tethering and charging huge fees to enable it. Witness AT&T's $25/month fee for tethering on the iPhone. Now Tether's one-time pricetag of $25 doesn't sound so high, especially when the carriers can't arbitrarily disable it, they way they can with Google's native tethering app.

If Tether sounds good to you, but you want to try before you buy, there's a free one-week demo. Also, if you see the $49.99 price anywhere on the Tether site, that's a mistake: the Blackberry version, which also includes tethering via Wi-Fi, is $49.99. The price for the Android version will show up as $24.99 when you add it to your cart.
The module can be seen on the right side of the Top News, My News and Upcoming pages on Digg. Right now it shows five stories at a time, with one of them being highlighted as a Hot Story. The new section will also allow Digg to aggregate stories on a particular topic.

Unlike the rest of Digg, where users control the stories' performance by casting their votes to either 'digg' or 'bury' them, the Breaking News section will be curated by Digg staff, in an effort to showcase important news as quickly as possible.
From November 20th to January 2nd, most flights on Virgin, AirTran and Delta will offer free, Google-Chrome-sponsored Wi-Fi, in a repeat of last year's successful giveaway. The internet access provider for these flights is GoGo In-Flight Internet, which would normally cost between $5-13 for a single flight pass, depending on the length of your flight.

Speeds will likely be quite slow -- as more people than usual will be using the flight's connection when it's free. You probably won't be able to keep up with your World of Warcraft raids while you're in the air, but you'll at least be able to check your email a few times before you land.
The updated apps are set to go live today in the iTunes App Store and the Android Market.

The mobile apps now have the complete functionality of the Web-based Tumblr Dashboard built in. The new Dashboard seamlessly presents users with photos, galleries, links, audio and video content, making browsing through the Dashboard a very enjoyable experience.

Tumblr's native features, such as reblogging, answering posts or replying, are all included as well. As are speed improvements that make the apps faster than ever to load and use.

These updates will make their way into Tumblr's BlackBerry app in the future.
The feature will at first only be available on Google.com. It's currently opt-out, so you'll have to toggle it by clicking the appropriate option that should show up below the search box (see screenshot).

While Instant on mobile should prove useful by not requiring extensive typing to get to the search results you want, on the other hand a great chunk of the instantly delivered search results page will be covered by the keyboard. So the jury's still out on whether this is life-changing, but it is a neat trick, and being opt-in ensures that should you not like it, you have the option of simply not using it.
Its debut didn't bring much to the table: in effect, it was just a miniaturised version of the desktop browser toolbar. Today, however, with the release of version 1.3 for Android, StumbleUpon lets you stumble the Android Market.

Don't get too excited just yet, though. App stumbling definitely works, but it's not an excellent experience by any means. For a start, the UI is incredibly fiddly -- in landscape mode it's just about OK, but the buttons really are small. The act of stumbling is easy, but page loads can take a while (on Wi-Fi!), and 'Info' pages take even longer.

It also only uses your currently-installed applications to determine what apps to show you -- in other words, it does the same thing as AppBrain. If you have a ton of crappy games installed, it'll only show you more games. That's not to say that the suggestions were bad, however -- I was only shown high-rated and interesting-looking apps. Other than the small buttons, the user interface is good, too.

Finally, let's not forget this is a beta. StumbleUpon for Android already has excellent Web, Flickr and YouTube capabilities, and there's no reason that app stumbling will be anything short of awesome once the developers finish their work. The Android Market, as it stands, is an unsearchable morass of mediocrity. Once app stumbling takes your 'topics of interest' and your previous Web stumbles into consideration I can't imagine using any other tool for app discovery on Android.

Three upcoming Google Docs features have been uncovered today by way of digging through the site's source code. These are support for third party applications (built on top of Docs), cloud printing, and sync.

Cloud printing is the one that has been known about for quite a while, but in Chrome and Chrome OS context. Limited support for it has been baked into Chromium for the past month, and it makes sense that Google would want to take its Cloud Print initiative to Docs as well.

As for the other two features, not much is known about them at this point, but we can speculate. Third party apps could quickly bring missing features to Google Docs, such as editing PDFs, maybe even images and videos. Sync is a little bit intriguing, but if done right, it could end up being an interesting alternative to Microsoft's Live Mesh 2011. Especially considering the support for uploading more and more file types to Google Docs.

It's actually a little out of date now -- Apple is now countersuing Motorola -- but otherwise the data is mostly up-to-date. The full image is after the break.

The infographic also includes snippets of each law suit, which is handy for understanding the overall picture. Some of the lawsuits are hilarious -- check out Kodak suing Samsung for "image storage & movie previews" -- aren't patents awesome?

Incidentally, I think I just stumbled across a new game: go to Google and start typing "apple suing"... and see what suggestions pop up! It works well for "microsoft suing" too.

Blekko, despite how it sounds, is a search engine -- not a euphemism for vomit.

It's a search engine that, in its quest to go up against bigger opponents like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, has tried to set itself apart by lumping operators into "slashtags," calling itself "social," and touting how "open" and "transparent" its search results are. It also tries to put an overwhelmingly positive spin on human bias playing a huge role in search rankings. Blekko hopes to attract not just disillusioned power-users, but everyday users as well -- and from what I've seen, that doesn't seem very likely.

For starters, if you share the aversion to the three-letter acronym SEO that many users of social media tend to have these days, this search engine is not for you. If you like to get your search results very quickly, then this search engine probably isn't for you. If you like your search engine to be intuitive, and furthermore, to get decent results with a minimum amount of finagling, then I have to say that Blekko is not the search engine for you.

I spent a couple of solid hours using Blekko in a vain attempt to find a reason for all the hype. After all, The New York Times went as far as to call Blekko "A New Search Engine, Where Less Is More," and our own AOL compatriot Michael Arrington gave it plenty of positive attention at TechCrunch. I was actually hoping that there might be some worth to the plucky little upstart -- but instead I found a bloated, buggy search engine with largely worthless, extremely inaccurate results, regardless of what slashtag I used to "vertically narrow" my search.

Continue reading Blekko, the "Slashtag" search engine is slow, cumbersome, and just plain broken

Blekko, the "Slashtag" search engine is slow, cumbersome, and just plain broken originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST.

Asa Dotzler, not content with graphing the total run-time of the SunSpider benchmark, has provided a beautiful chart that breaks down the JavaScript performance of Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome. Take a look at it above, or click through to see a larger version. Internet Explorer 8 is missing because it was too slow -- and IE9 is missing because the test machine ran Windows XP, but Asa says he will follow up with same test on Windows 7.

Looking at the chart, you will probably come to the same conclusion as him: JavaScript performance, at least as measured by SunSpider, has plateaued. With just one hundredth of a second between Opera, Firefox and Chrome, it really is time for SunSpider to take a bow and exit stage left. Or -- and this is Mozilla's preference -- it's not about how fast the engine is -- it's really about how you use it.

Fortunately there's a rigorous and more 'modern' test in the form of Google's V8 benchmark, and Mozilla's Kraken benchmark promises to provide more 'real world application' statistics. If you're wondering, Google Chrome currently leads the V8 benchmark, and Mozilla Firefox leads the Kraken benchmark. No surprises there, really.
Firefox 4 maxes out SunSpider benchmark originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 30 Oct 2010 09:45:00 EST.
Google's newest official Chrome extension is sure to get a lot of use in the coming months. Assuming you've got extension-syncing enabled in a capable version of the browser, Web Clipboard brings a fully synced clipboard to Chrome, and it's pretty nice for an initial -- though somewhat buggy -- release. It copies both plain text and HTML within any Chrome tab, and secures the data on Google servers. Each item copied remains saved for 30 days, or until you clear the clipboard contents through the extension's drop-down menu.

The extension just released today, but Google warns of two major known issues: Gmail isn't yet supported, and neither are pages which contain frames. I've also run into a spot of trouble in getting items copied with the extension to paste inside Google Docs.

On the bright side, text copied using Docs' built-in clipboard will be instantly available in the extension for pasting elsewhere. Last but not least, the extension is currently only able to paste inside form elements. Despite these early obstacles, this is probably one of the more useful extensions in the gallery for people who use more than one computer. Since this is an official Google extension, I would think the bugs will get worked out fairly quickly.

One thing I'm hoping for in subsequent updates is for the extension to work inside the Omnibar, which could make quickly copying a URL and switching computers a much smoother process than it is today. One thing's for certain, Chrome OS was definitely on the minds of Google's extension team when they cooked this one up.
Up until now, Yahoo-owned Flickr required a Yahoo ID to use. As you can see in the screenshot to the right, this is now also possible using an existing Google account. For now, Google accounts are supported only for those who are new to Flickr. Existing users will also get some enhancements to the sign-in experience, starting with the ability to sign in from any page on Flickr.

Online storage and collaboration service Box.net has increased its storage allotments for all its plans, whether free or paid.

The free service now allows you to store 5 GB of files in the cloud (up from 1GB) with a per-file size limit of 25 MB. Premium upgrades include 25 GB of capacity for $9.99 or 50 GB for $19.99. Upping the file size limit to 1 GB is also possible for a fee.

For three users and up, there's the Business plan. This costs $15 per user per month and gives you a pool of 500 GB that's shared across your users. The file size limit is 2 GB.

An enterprise plan is also available, and this still has unlimited storage (the file size limit is still 2 GB) -- but you'll have to contact Box.net for a quote if you're interested.

As the limited amount of storage has been one of Box.net's weaknesses so far, it's good to see the company rectify that. Today's upgrades are already available for new users. Existing Box.net users will get the increased capacities over the next few weeks.

Box.net increases storage quotas for both free and paid plans originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST.

Flickr has added a couple of new features today. People You May Know is a rather self-explanatory tool that suggests friends for you based on your existing contacts and the people they know. This feature now appears on the Find Your Friends page, but also has a module on the Flickr homepage. You can categorize people as a friend, family, or contact right within the module. To have new suggestions shown, just dismiss those who aren't interesting to you and new ones will pop up.

Don't want yourself showing up in other people's suggestions? Just make sure your profile is hidden from public searches (there's a setting for that) -- as that toggle also controls this ability.

You can also import contacts from Facebook now. The option checks which of your Facebook friends have a Flickr account and joins similar tools made for importing from Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail.

Flickr now imports Facebook friends, suggests users you may know originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 19:30:00 EST. Last month we brought you a sneak peek at the new Yahoo Mail interface -- and as of today anyone can sign up. Other than the usual slew of new features -- a virus scanner, spam protection, sexy mobile clients -- this launch also heralds the launch of a very purple theme... which you can't seem to change...

There's an accompanying Yahoo! Developer Network blog post if you want details of the technical changes behind the new Beta. Most notably, Yahoo deployed a bunch of efficient HTTP proxies around the world that significantly speed up connectivity if you're not based near Yahoo's mail servers in the U.S. They also overhauled the rendering of the website itself, utilizing YUI 3, CSS3, and anything else that could reduce the amount of clunky HTML required -- gone are <table> elements!

All in all, the changes make for a much smoother Yahoo Mail experience. A lot of the cruft has been removed -- so much so that it looks a bit like Gmail, but with a "social" landing page tacked on the front. Let's not forget that Yahoo Mail, at least as of last year, owns the U.S. email market -- it's twice the size of Windows Hotmail and almost three times the size of Gmail. This update will affect, in a good way, how the majority of U.S. Internet users send email!
Yahoo!
A new chart editor is now available for the spreadsheet tool inside Google Docs, along with some new chart types to choose from.

The most noteworthy feature additions to the chart editor are that it now automatically recommends chart types based on the data, matches data labels and headers, automatically selects colors, gives you more control over imagery, has advanced visualizations and a full size preview pane -- and gives you the ability to embed dynamically updating charts across the Web.

New chart types include annotated timelines, organizational charts, gauges, and a motion chart. Existing charts have received a makeover, and they should now have a more professional look and feel, complete with new colors, an improved layout and more customization options.

The new chart editor can be taken for a spin by going to goo.gl/newcharts. You can learn more about it by going through these help articles. A demo video is available after the break.
Continue reading Google Docs gets new chart editor and some new chart types

Google Docs gets new chart editor and some new chart types originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 21:00:00 EST.
