My free Google Apps Gmail account has about 7.5GB of storage space, total. That's extremely generous on Google's part, but that amount of space does eventually fill up – especially if you have people sending you huge PowerPoint presentations, videos of their baby's first steps, or hilarious kitten photos in full resolution (because they have no idea what "resolution" means, much less how to ...

With Google calling out Facebook last week for trapping your contacts, it seems like a perfect time to offer a solution for rescuing those Facebook contacts and their email addresses -- sorry, still no phone numbers -- and exporting them to Gmail or your other address book of choice.
To do this, you'll need a Yahoo! account (Mozilla's Asa Dotzler says a Windows Live account works, too). It's ...

Google has announced a subtle re-tooling of the Gmail homepage, trimming the verbal fat and giving the page a cleaner, more organized appearance. It's hard to believe, but the new version of the page is lighter by about 250 words. The update shouldn't come as a surprise, what with Google's penchant for keeping things slim.
More interesting than the facelift on Gmail.com is the updated Gmail ...

It's more like instant messaging than email -- more like a conversation than a threaded email conversation. Yes, every communication that goes through the Facebook messaging platform will create a conversation history. Much like Google Wave, actually.
The idea is that you will push every digital communication through Facebook, and thus everything can be logged -- every message has a context. ...

Extolling the virtues of what messaging should be -- seamless, instant, personal and simple -- Mark Zuckerberg has just launched what sounds just like a socially-aware version of the now-defunct Google Wave.
It is not email -- though you will get a username@facebook.com email address -- but it handles email. It's a messaging platform that interweaves all of your incoming messages, be they ...

Things are relatively quiet this morning in the blogosphere, with the except of rumblings about Facebook possibly launching their own webmail app to compete with the likes of Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Gmail. In reality, it's probably not so much about competition as it is with getting Facebook users to spend as much time on the site as possible -- adding to Facebook's glut of delicious, ...

This morning, TechCrunch speculates that Facebook is going to launch a "Gmail killer" this coming Monday. Facebook has sent out invites to an event in San Francisco where they will supposedly announce it. Its working title is Project Titan, but it will probably change into something much more friendly for mass-consumption (let's just hope they don't call it "FaceMail" or something horrible like ...

We all have email. We have too much email, actually. And it stays in the inbox and just piles up, gathering dust, cobwebs and guilt. There are tons of services, systems, and lifehacks to try help us get rid of some of that overload, or at least handle it a tad better.
0Boxer is another such attempt, but it's a particularly graceful one. It comes as a Firefox or Chrome extension that hooks onto ...

A few days ago, we were able to get Hotmail's new opt-in, full-session SSL (HTTPS) turned on, and now Microsoft has announced the general availability of the new feature. What we didn't know at the time is that the security upgrade has also been applied to other Live services -- including SkyDrive, Docs, Photos, and Devices.
If you'd like to activate full session SSL (and we'd recommend you ...

As both a huge Gmail nerd and a huge keyboard shortcut nerd, I was pretty excited to learn that Gmail has a couple of shortcuts that are not documented anywhere. If you often find yourself needing to compose messages that include people on the CC or BCC fields, you can now launch a brand new message with one or both of those fields available by default. As Google Operating System reports, instead ...

Even average users are a bit more in-tune when it comes to security and privacy on the Web nowadays (thanks in part to the recent Firesheep business). As Sebastian pointed out, there's a simple solution: browse using HTTPS whenever possible.
There's a minor problem with that fix, however. Many sites log you in via an SSL-encrypted connection but then immediately redirect you to an insecure ...

Google has started testing a call recording feature inside Gmail. It looks like this is still at the experimental phase and therefore isn't widely available yet. If all goes well during the testing period, recording should be made available to all users who have the call phone option enabled in Gmail.
Call recording in Gmail is quite similar to the same feature in Google Voice. You can press ...

The Gmail team has just announced five new themes for Gmail:
Basic Black: Shown above, it's a bare bones high-contrast theme; it's actually quite soothing.
Basic White: It's the same as Basic Black, only in white.
Android: This one seems like kind of a shameless marketing move (where's the "iPhone" theme?), but it's really a nice theme. You get a subtle circuit-board pattern up top, with a ...

"Remember Mom's birthday," says the bland email from Google Calendar. Sometimes that's enough, really -- but other times, you may want to add a bit of pizzazz to make things more interesting... Especially if you're sending that scheduled reminder to someone other than yourself.
Alertful is a simple, well-designed email alert service. It works kind of like e-cards: there are tailor-made reminders ...

Microsoft has been cramming tons of useful new features into Hotmail this year, and the venerable webmail app is looking better than ever. Today, Microsoft has announced the arrival of another new feature -- one that is squarely aimed at encouraging new users to give Hotmail a try.
One big thing which prevents users from making the switch to a new mail provider is the fact that they've already ...
