Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has announced that the Unity shell currently used in Ubuntu's netbook edition will become the default user interface for Ubuntu's main desktop edition as well, starting with the next version of the operating system. Unity became Ubuntu's netbook UI with the release of the current version of the OS, 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is set to be released before the end of April 2011, and will represent a significant milestone in Ubuntu's history. It will be the first version of the OS not to ship with the Gnome shell as the default UI. Gnome will continue to be the underlying framework, as Unity is based on it, but the interface layer will look nothing like Gnome.

The reasons for this shift are many, but consist mostly of differences of opinion between Ubuntu's leadership and the upstream developers of Gnome. According to Shuttleworth, Ubuntu tried to participate in the Gnome shell design process but found many philosophical differences that were impossible to reconcile. They decided to go their own way and improve Unity to the point at which it will become a viable replacement for the Gnome shell.

Gnome's rejection of global menus as well as performance issues with Gnome's new Mutter window manager are also to blame for Ubuntu's change of direction. A key factor was also multi-touch, and Shuttleworth's clear belief that extensive support for it should be built into the OS. Unity is already multi-touch-enabled in Ubuntu 10.10 but the plan is to bring richer touch interaction to the desktop with Ubuntu 11.04.

This move could anger at least some open source enthusiasts, but it probably shouldn't. Ubuntu is clearly trying to further differentiate itself in a Linux world filled with UIs and user experiences that are extremely similar. It is a risky bet, but Shuttleworth says that developers need not worry because fragmentation can be avoided by using FreeDesktop.org to ensure that desktop integration mechanisms are standardized and interoperable. Whether that will be enough to alleviate all possible issues or silence the critics of this decision remains to be seen.

The standard Gnome shell will continue to be available as a non-default installation option.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal - Unity replaces Gnome as default shell originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 21:00:00 EST.
Ubuntu 10.10 was recently released, and one of the many feature additions Canonical is excited about is the introduction of the uTouch gesture framework, which brings multi-touch support to the popular Linux distro.

Using uTouch, users can perform a range of actions ranging from displaying the task switcher you see above to minimizing, maximizing, and restoring windows. Curious about how Ubuntu's Unity interface and uTouch might work on your own touch-enabled system? Check the video after the break!

A note for the impatient: up until the 39s mark or so, it's mostly one-finger UI poking.

Ubuntu 10.10 is due to arrive next month (10/10, of course), and if you've been waiting for Canonical to make the jump from alpha to beta before taking an early peek at it -- today's the day! The download page is up, torrents are seeded, and you can finally get your paws on the Maverick Meerkat beta.

The new release features refined visuals from the background to the default icons. The simplified installer also now features an option to download an MP3 decoder during the setup process -- giving users the ability to play back the popular audio format from the get-go. There's also a slick new audio menu which display album artwork and playback controls.

Multi-touch support has been added and the Unbuntu Software Center refined, and some of the default applications have been replaced as well. Ubuntu Netbook Edition has also been overhauled, and now sports the new Unity dock and a snazzy home screen.

With the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 due in just under a month, things appear to be right on schedule at Canonical. Yesterday the Lucid beta download page went live and eager testers rapidly descended upon the mirrors.

Watching Lucid evolve has been exciting. It's clear that Canonical is intent on creating a version of Ubuntu which can appeal to a broader base of computer users with a more select set of default programs, new visuals, built-in easy access to social networks via Gwibber, and loads of other improvements.

One key addition to the beta is Wubi. If you're not familiar with it, Wubi is a Windows program which allows you to install Ubuntu on the same drive as your Windows install. It's an extremely simple way to take Ubuntu for a test drive -- or make it a permanent fixture on your system.

Continue reading Ubuntu 10.04 beta now available for download (screenshot tour)

Ubuntu 10.04 beta now available for download (screenshot tour) originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 09:40:00 EST. Among the other improvements, tweaks, and retoolings headed to Ubuntu 10.04, the Ubiquity installer slideshow appears set for an update.

Ubuntu contributor Dylan McCall has posted preview images of the new screens which could be coming soon to the OS's Ubiquity installer. Interestingly enough they're cast in the soft browns of Lucid's first alpha releases -- and not the Mac-esque color schemes which recently appeared.

I'm a bit surprised that there's no mention of the U1 Music Store or of the built-in support for the iPhone and iPod touch (thanks to Gnome). The slides seem like the perfect place to make people aware of those features -- and new Ubuntu users would probably enjoy hearing about them.

There's plenty of time for change, of course. These are, after all, preview images for the installer of an OS which is still in alpha. Canonical seems focused on delivering a superb offering with Lucid, and I don't doubt that the finished experience will be very polished.
For there to be any chance of "the year of Linux on the desktop" ever becoming a reality, certain things have to happen. One of those things (like it or not) is for a major distribution to support the most popular portable media players on the planet -- the iPhone and iPod Touch.

And it looks as though Canonical has stepped up to the plate. According to reports at Ubuntuforums, Lucid Lynx supports Apple's hardware without breaking a sweat.

The Nautilus file manager can browse and access files, but that's really not too interesting to the average user. What does matter is that Rythmbox can play your tunes right from your iPhone or Touch. Pair that with the Ubuntu One Music Store, and it's clear that Lucid is well on its way to becoming an extremely consumer-friendly distro.

It may not sound like much, but when I had Ubuntu systems on display for retail customers nearly everyone asked "can I do all the same things I can on Windows with this?" which they followed with "can my kids use their iPod with it?"

Since I'll soon be able to answer "yes" to that question, it might not be long before Ubuntu systems reappear on our shelves -- and those of other system builders as well.

As Canonical continues work on Ubuntu 10.04, it's becoming more and more apparent that they're serious about delivering an OS with some serious consumer appeal. Ubuntu One -- Canonical's cloud sync service -- and the U1 Music Store will no doubt contribute to that appeal.

After showing us a handful of early screenshots of the Music Store, self-professed Ubuntu fanboy Popey has been digging again and discovered something interesting in Rythmbox, the distribution's default audio player.

During the installation of the Rythmbox U1 Music Store package, a hidden folder (~/.ubuntuone/musicstore) is created on the system and linked to Rythmbox's libraries. Popey believes that since you wouldn't normally expect a user to save files in a hidden location -- and since subfolders in the ubuntuone directory are synced via the Ubuntu One service -- that your audio downloads could be automatically stored to both your own hard drive and Canonical's cloud.

With Ubuntu One's web interface at the ready, you could theoretically be enjoying tunes purchased through the U1 store on any (and all) your systems with minimal fuss. Once the Ubuntu One desktop client makes its way onto Windows and Mac, the process should be even simpler.

It's a guessing game for now, but as Alpha 3 approaches and Canonical begins work on the Lucid Beta we'll start getting a better look at how (or if) Ubuntu One and the Music Store will work together.

Continue reading Ubuntu Music Store may feature automatic cloud and desktop sync

Ubuntu Music Store may feature automatic cloud and desktop sync originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 11:05:00 EST. Over at Popey.com there are a whole slew of new screenshots of the upcoming Ubuntu One Music Store, which will eventually appear in Ubuntu10.04 Lucid Lynx.

It was widely reported that Amazon would provide the backend for the Music Store, but it now looks as though 7Digital will be handling things instead. I'm not surprised, as 7Digital is actually available in more countries. Amazon has, for example, been promising to deliver downloads to Canada for more than two years, and still hasn't come up with the digital goods.

7Digital is certainly a strong choice, and their logo already looks a little Ubuntu-y (though I'm guessing that wasn't part of the selection criteria). Their store offers a great selection of music including just about everything in heavy rotation on top-40 radio.

Add the Music Store to the revamped default software packages, user manual, and other improvements and Lucid will be -- by a wide margin -- the most average consumer-friendly Ubuntu release to date.

How to convince a Mac OS X or Windows user to try GNU/Linux? Installing the desired distribution in a Virtual Machine? Read them all those FAQs about partitioning your hard drive for a dual-boot system? No, no - there's an easier way: live CDs or DVDs! Almost every distribution (like Ubuntu, Knoppix or Fedora) are capable of booting into a fully functional desktop right from a burned disc. Simply download the .iso image file, burn it to a CD or DVD with your favorite disc burning application, and reboot your machine!

But one big disadvantage, especially on older hardware, is the slow startup time. Jamie Bennett, blogger and one of Canonical's Ubuntu Mobile developers, has explained the difficulties of speeding up the process. Tweaking and speeding the boot time is only possible if you find out why it was slow:

There are two broad steps in the process of booting a live CD. The first is preparing the environment for the session and the second -- you guessed it -- is actually booting into the session. Initial hunches were that the first step (setup) was the major cause of slowness.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx is expected to land on April 29th - and could land with a big bang. As we have reported in November Canonical, sponsor and developer of Ubuntu, is working hard on an iTunes-like music store. Rumors are saying that the music store will be a part of the Ubuntu single sign on service - providing a single, central login service for all Ubuntu-related sites and applications, thus making it more convenient for Ubuntu users and community members to access information, communicate, and contribute.

Lucid Lynx comes with a newly designed Software Center where you will be able to purchase music from the same application that allows you to browse, search and install applications. Most likely this will be a partnership with Amazon's digital music download service (seeing as how Amazon already has a version of its MP3 download tool for Linux). The music service will work in conjunction with either Rhythmbox or Banshee.

A music store build into an operating system without the need of adding extra software plus the already available and coming features to Ubuntu one (back up, store, sync and share your data with other Ubuntu One users) - how simple and easy is that? And soon enough commercial software will join the mix inside of the Ubuntu Software Center. This will rock!
The watchful eyes at Phoronix noticed that a pair of small changes were announced yesterday on the Ubuntu dev list. Both will affect the browser in Lucid Lynx -- and both have to do with search.
The more subtle of the two is a small tweak within Firefox. When a user changes his or her default search, the Ubuntu start page's search box will send queries to that provider. While most users may never see this in action (just about everyone sets a custom home page, right?), it's a nice change and keeps the search experience consistent.

Now on to the not-so-subtle change.

In the same post, Canonical's Rick Spencer also announced that a revenue sharing deal has been reached and Yahoo! will replace Google as the default search option. Spencer stresses that the deal in no way affects the user's ability to change to a different engine and I'm fairly confident that most Ubuntu users are savvy enough to know how to do that.

The deal will provide additional income for Canonical -- which Spencer says will "will help Canonical to provide developers and resources to continue the open development of Ubuntu and the Ubuntu Platform." That's certainly good news. After all, if you allow users to download your OS for free, it's fairly critical to have alternative revenue streams to fuel your business.

One reply on the dev thread noted that it would be nice for Yahoo! to remove the "unsupported OS" warning from Yahoo! Mail since they're snuggling up to Linux. Seems like a good idea to me...
To say Ubuntu has a dedicated fanbase is probably a bit of an understatement. As the most widely-recognized Linux distribution, Ubuntu has helped push Linux beyond the fringe of desktop computer use.

But because it's Linux -- and because Linux and open source are intertwined so tightly in the minds of many -- things get a little dicey when there's mention of closed source software being packaged with Ubuntu by default.

Take the recent survey they posted. It's a reasonable enough request - which apps would you like to see in Ubuntu which currently aren't available? Where the trouble arises is with the selections listed in the survey, apparently: Photoshop, iTunes, Skype, Hulu.

Oh god, no! What the hell are they thinking?!

I'll tell you what. They're thinking that Ubuntu needs those apps in order to appeal to a much broader group of people. Windows still owns the desktop computer market, and the lack of recognizable apps like iTunes keeps many people from even considering Linux as an alternative.

It's the truth, whether the Ubuntu community wants to admit it or not. I've tried to extol the virtues of Linux to plenty of retail customers and more than one has replied "can I run iTunes on it?" When I say no, their interest disappears completely.

Bringing apps like those mentioned would be a bold move by Canonical, but one that would indeed pay off in the long run.
There's a change in leadership coming at Canonical soon. Sort of. CEO Mark Shuttleworth has been the driving force at the company behind the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution since day one. Today he announced plans to step down as CEO early next year. But he's staying involved in the company and the person who is taking over has been involved in Canonical almost as long as Shuttleworth.

On March 1, 2010 Canonical Chief Operating Officer Jane Silber will become the institution's next Chief Executive Officer. She's been with Canonical since 2004 and has spent her time wearing a variety of different hats from finance to legal, to management of the OEM Services and Ubuntu One teams. She also has a background in software development.

Shuttleworth, meanwhile, says he'll be freeing up more time to focus on "product design, partnerships, and customers."

What does this all mean for the future of Ubuntu development? Probably not very much. Ubuntu is and always has been shaped by a number of factors, including input from the folks at Canonical and the larger Ubuntu community of users. But Shuttleworth has been the public face of Ubuntu for years, and it should be interesting to see what, if any impact the changes at the top have on Ubuntu's public image.

My guess? still nothing. If Bill Gates can hand over the reigns of Microsoft to Steve Ballmer relatively seamlessly, I don't see why a change in leadership at a company known for making open source software would be any more contentious.

Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth stepping down, COO Jane Silber steps up originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 13:09:00 EST. "Bring out the GIMP."

"GIMP's sleeping."

"On second thought, let him sleep. We're not gonna be using him anymore anyway."

You heard Zed and Maynard right. It looks as though Canonical's plans for Lucid Lynx don't include the OSS Photoshop alternative.

Prevailing sentiment seems to be that the GIMP is is considered to be a 'professional' application and not necessary for the average user. OS X and Windows systems don't ship with Photoshop, so Ubuntu doesn't really need to provide that level of functionality out-of-the-box. Basic editing duties will likely be handed off to F-Spot, which also includes album management.

GIMP's interface complexity was also considered a strike against it. Ultimately, Canonical is striving for a default set of apps that are simple and straightforward enough for average users. After all, power users can still head to Synaptic or run apt-get from a terminal window to install anything they need.
One program people I know miss when they've tried to switch to Linux is iTunes. Like it or not, Apple's desktop app has gained the reputation of being the place to buy music and video downloads. But iTunes on Linux? Fuhgettaboutit.

That leaves an opportunity for someone in the Linux community to step up and deliver an alternative. Enter Canonical, who may be preparing to do just that in time for the release of Lucid Lynx.

Over at LaunchPad, there's a blueprint called Ubuntu One Music Store which states its goal as "to deliver the ability to purchase music from within a desktop music player." There's nothing much yet for details on the associated wiki, so there's no telling yet what exactly might be in the works.

As Joe Panettieri points out at WorksWithU, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth mentioned Amazon during a press call for the launch of Karmic Koala. Unlike Apple, Amazon was more than happy to show Linux users some love - offering a downloader for purchases from their MP3 store. They're also pretty chummy already thanks to that whole cloud thing.

Even if the Ubuntu One Music Store ends up being an affiliate app powered by Amazon, it could provide a decent revenue stream for Canonical. It's also one more feature that could entice users to give Linux a try on their desktop.
We've been looking at Ubuntu 9.10 for a while now in anticipation of the big day. It's finally here, and the full release of Karmic Koala is now available for download.

As usual, there are plenty of ways to get your hands on the new OS. Unlike Windows 7, that includes certified, honest to goodness torrents straight from Canonical. They're already fairly well seeded, so P2P downloads should be nice and speedy.

To save you sifting through the massive list of links, here are the three big ones:

Desktop, 32-bit [torrent] [direct download]

On Thursday the folks at Canonical will release Ubuntu 9.10, the latest version of the popular Linux distribution. But as the operating system grows more and more popular, there's one service that Canonical has been offering for years that gets more and more expensive. Up until now, if you wanted to install Ubuntu, you could either download a disc image and burn it to a CD or DVD or sign up to have Canonical send you a free CD.

But the thing about free CDs is that somebody has to pay for them. And in this case, it's Canonical that's footing the bill. And the more people request the free CDs, the higher that bill gets. So Canonical has decided to place a few limits on the ShipIt program for distributing those CDs.

The discs will still be made available to Local Community team members and Ubuntu contributors. And new Ubuntu users will be able to request a CD. But you need to create an account and sign in to request that CD. In other words, Canonical will be tracking you and will only send you a free CD the first time you ask for one. After that, you'll be expected to either upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu by downloading software updates or by purchasing a disc from the Ubuntu Store.
Ubuntu certainly has its fans - perhaps more than any other Linux distro. One person you can rest assured isn't part of that group: EEEUbuntu developer Andrew Wyatt. In case you aren't familiar with the project, EEEUbuntu is a customized Linux distro tailored to Asus' line of netbooks.

It was a SourceForge community choice award winner this year - for best new project. Now, however, it looks as though the distribution's future may be in jeopardy. On his personal blog, Wyatt expresses his frustration at receiving blame for problems actually caused by things like wonky Intel video drivers and kernel bugs.

Things which he feels are the result of carelessness of Ubuntu developers. "...They missed something as stupid as the ntel tiling kernel bug which caused every Intel card out there to crawl during any OpenGL function. There is no excuse for their release of alpha grade drivers and less than alpha grade kernel code into their release distribution," Wyatt writes.

He also hits on an issue that has given me grief in the past on multiple laptops - knowing what to do when you shut the lid. "Who needs suspend anyway, not like its a useful feature and all on an ultraportable." If it bothers me, I can certainly see how it would vex someone who develops a Ubuntu-based OS.

In closing his post, Wyatt gets in one last parting shot: "Maybe I should buy a copy of Windows 7, I hear that it actually works. How can we expect non-techical users to use this pile of garbage that is 'Linux'?"

Ouch.
You've likely heard about Ubuntu One by now - we've mentioned it a couple times here on Download Squad, and it's now making regular appearances on Karmic Koala beta desktops everywhere.

Canonical made it clear from the get-go that Ubuntu 9.10 was going to pack plenty of cloud functionality for both desktops and servers. One piece of that puzzle is CouchDB, which developer Elliot Murphy was overjoyed to announce has slipped in under the wire to beat the Karmic code freeze.

In his exuberance, he made the following statement:

"...and by the time Ubuntu 9.10 is released on October 29th every single Ubuntu user will have an address book stored in CouchDB that replicates with one.ubuntu.com, and Tomboy notes that are replicated via a web API at the application but then stored in CouchDB and carried along in the CouchDB replication that we have set up."

What Elliot meant, unfortunately, was that every Ubuntu user can -- not will -- have their data replicate. That tiny slip-up touched off a bit of crapstorm, with users at LWN reacting strongly to the implication that their data would be piped to Ubuntu's servers. Murphy later added a revised comment to the thread at LWN apologizing for the confusion.

Moral of the story: be extra careful when talking about private user data and cloud storage -- seems like it might still be a bit of a touchy subject.
