To use the service, you have to have an iPhone 4, an iPad or a fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2. If you do, you'll be able to locate your device on a map, lock it, display a message of your choosing on your device's display (so presumably someone who finds it may return it), play a sound, or, if all else fails, remotely wipe your data. The service works from any browser or any other iOS device that has the Find My iPhone, iPod touch and iPadd app installed.
Apple customers who are clamoring for iOS 4.2 shouldn't have much longer to wait. Today, Apple released a gold master of iOS 4.2.1 to developers, which should get the gold master software for iPhones and iPads back on the same version after a little snafu with the iPad version of the software last week. 4.2.1 just came out, and there's no changelog, so we don't know whether any features have been added yet, or whether this will actually be the version released to the public, leapfrogging over 4.2.

MacStories is reporting rumors of serious issues with audio and Exchange in iOS 4.2, and that 4.2.1 was release internally earlier this week as an urgent fix for those issues. The site also says that Apple employees were instructed to get testing done by this weekend, which points to a release early next week.
Apple's latest update to Safari, Safari 5.0.3, fixes some Flash and JavaScript plug-in issues, but the most important fix can be found in the address bar. Yes, Apple has finally fixed the absolutely obnoxious behavior of Safari's address bar autocomplete, which used to suggest sites based on page titles and headlines rather than by URL. The address bar now prefers your bookmarked websites and previously visited URLs over arbitrary page titles and headlines, so typing "Apple" will get you Apple.com, instead of a Google results page from the last time you Googled "apple."

Our friends at TUAW tested out this new behavior, and they've got before and after screenshots of the address bar results from Safari 5.0.2 vs. Safari 5.0.3, in case you want to see the difference for yourself. You can get Safari 5.03 now, either by running Software Update or directly from Apple.com.

Apple updates Safari, fixes annoying address bar behavior originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. FireCore aim to have the first public beta out within the next two weeks, possibly even as early as next week, with the installer requiring 'no wires or USB drives,' just direct communication with the Apple TV. Once you've got aTV Flash (black) installed on your pocket media box, new apps and updates can be installed easily via a 'Maintenance' menu, making further expansion a trivial procedure.

Of course, Apple could easily wipe out the need for this kind of hackery simply by enabling apps on the Apple TV, but until then, developers like FireCore will attempt to make Apple's 'hobby' ever more useful. Hit the break for some video demos of aTV Flash (black) in action.
That gold master has just been made available to developers, for iPad only. With this problem out of the way, we're now looking at a likely Monday release for iOS 4.2.

One helpful tip to avoid confusion between the two different iOS 4.2 gold masters: the build number of the updated iPad-only gold master is the same as the previous one, but with a b added to the end, so make sure you download build number 8C134b for use on the iPad.
Apple releases new Gold Master for iOS 4.2, fixes iPad Wi-Fi bug originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST. iTunes 10.1 is now available to download, for Mac or Windows. This version was expected to hit before the iOS 4.2 update (that may have been delayed in the mean time), because it brings support for Apple's newest mobile operating system version. This, of course, will come in handy once iOS 4.2 is released, because you'll be able to update your iDevice using the new iTunes 10.1.

Also in the new release is support for video AirPlay, the feature that will let you instantly, wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the Apple TV. As usual, stability and performance improvements are included too.
While the previously rumored delay existed thanks to issues with Japanese characters not being displayed properly, this delay has its roots in something more important -- Wi-Fi connection issues that have been reported by many users of the golden master for the iPad.

What happens is that the iPad simply disconnects from a Wi-Fi network just a few minutes after it has connected. This is the most widely reported behavior of the bug, although some extreme cases, where users simply can't use Safari at all, have also been reported. Rumor has it that Apple has decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 until they fix this bug. Before that though, Apple may even release a second golden master build, with the bug fixed -- and that could happen as early as tomorrow. If another GM is pushed out, the final release may be delayed by at least a week. Either way, iOS 4.2 is on track to reach consumers before Thanksgiving.

AirPrint, Apple's new printing service for iDevices, should be available now for anyone running the golden master of iOS 4.2 on their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Supposedly brought into OS X by the recent 10.6.5 pre-release builds, but pulled at the last-minute, AirPrint has been a bit problematic for some. Thankfully, developer Steven Troughton-Smith has come up with a guide to getting it to work on all installations of Mac OS 10.6.5, and all you need for now are a few files from one of the pre-release builds (which 9to5Mac have kindly provided for you).

The files you need to get AirPrint printing are:

/usr/libexec/cups/filter/urftopdf
/usr/share/cups/mime/apple.convs
/usr/share/cups/mime/apple.types

As you can see, they're located in a hidden "usr" folder, which you can get access to through the "Go to Folder" function in Finder. Simply type /usr/libexec/cups into the dialog and hit Enter. From there you can drop the files in the applicable places. Next you have to remove and re-install your printer, and activate sharing in the Sharing preferences pane if you haven't already. Once that's all done, you should be able to see and print to your printer directly over Wi-Fi, from your AirPrint-enabled iOS device of choice. Living the dream.

Apple's Ping social network, built for sharing music preferences with your friends via iTunes, disappeared from everyone's radar right after it launched. It might be getting a second wind now, though, thanks to a partnership with Twitter. Ping now lets you discover and add your Twitter contacts, and share your Ping posts as tweets.

Here's how it works, according to Twitter's official blog: if you link your Twitter account to Ping, your likes, purchases and reviews will be sent out as tweets. They're not just any tweets, though: Twitter and Ping have built in a "rich media experience" so you can preview a song or click a purchase link directly from a Ping tweet. The song and album info will also pop up in the details pane on the right side of Twitter.com.

After Facebook integration for Ping fell through, Apple's social network withered away because it had no connection to its users' existing social graphs. This Twitter partnership brings Ping out of isolation in a big way, by not only leveraging Twitter to help people add Ping contacts, but also letting Ping invade Twitter.com directly. It would be nice to see Twitter offer an option to filter out Ping tweets, though, because some users will inevitably see them as spam.
Twitter connects with Apple's Ping for easy music sharing originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. It will also make multitasking possible on the iPad.

The update was reportedly scheduled to go live last week, but a bug was found that didn't allow Japanese characters to be displayed properly -- and so Apple had to fix it before releasing the update. The iOS 4.2 golden master, which was made available to developers last week, should have been released on October 26, so it looks like its availability had been delayed by the aforementioned bug too.
iOS 4.2 to become available on Friday? originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 19:00:00 EST. Apple has released the latest version of its Snow Leopard operating system, Mac OS 10.6.5, which fixes a whole slew of little bugs and quirks, from improving Exchange support to fixing printer issues to syncing Address Book with Google Contacts. Snow Leopard users can get OS X 10.6.5 now by running Software Update.

The complete release notes -- much more thorough than Apple's usual vague "improves speed and stability' note -- are up on Apple.com, but here are some of the highlights:

Apple Mail should now play more nicely with Microsoft Exchange servers.

You can now use SSL with iDisk, to securely transfer your files to and from the cloud.

Address Book contacts can now be dragged to iCal without issues, and they can also be synced to Google Calendar/Google Contacts.

On the hardware compatibility front: Bluetooth now works more reliably for Apple's Magic Trackpad, third-party displays that use InstaPort should now work, and HP printers now work with Apple's Airport Extreme.

Although this isn't listed in the release notes, The Mac Observer reports that gamers will want to download Mac OS X 10.6.5 right away, because it's required for "high-end graphics options" in some games, including World of Warcraft.
Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6.5, with tons of little fixes originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:30:00 EST. Now we know how many downloads it took to do that: over 300,000. That's the official report from Skyfire for the first weekend's download totals. As Neowin points out, at 3 bucks per sale, that's over $1 million (before Apple takes its 30% cut, anyway).

The huge number of downloads has forced Skyfire to make its browser available in limited batches, so its server capacity and bandwidth can keep up with the demand. You can argue about whether this proves users want Flash or not, but it definitely proves they want video content that's not currently available in iPhone-friendly formats. Skyfire is reaping profits from that demand, certainly, but that's no reason for Apple to start supporting Flash video on the iPhone -- why would it, when it can let Skyfire do all the work and still make money on the deal?

Skyfire claims over 300,000 downloads in its first weekend originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. FaceTime, once the privilege of the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch owners only, can now be had, sans Apple's blessing, on the iPhone 3GS. Thanks to the iPhone Islam team (English translation), a jailbroken iOS and Cydia, iPhone 3GS users can now get in on the FaceTime action using FaceIt-3GS. Of course, there's one snag: try as they might, app developers couldn't overcome Apple's hardware oversight, which means that the faces are likely to be only one way. Still, I'm sure some enterprising user (possibly armed with a mirror [or two -Ed]) can make it work, and who doesn't like a bit of free "built-in" VoIP.

Defy Apple and head on over to Cydia, your friendly neighborhood jailbreak app store, to get what Steve doesn't want you to have. Check out a video of FaceIt-3GS in action after the break.
It's not because Skyfire violated any of Apple's policies, though -- it's because it was too popular. The browser hit #1 on the App Store's top grossing apps list within five hours of becoming available. The unexpected volume of downloads hammered Skyfire's server capacity and bandwidth, causing the developers to pull it from the store until they can build more capacity. Essentially, the app has sold out.

How can a browser max out its developer's servers? Well, Skyfire's main selling point is that it allows users to watch Flash video by transcoding it and delivering it in an iPhone-friendly format. The server space required to store those videos while Skyfire works this transcoding magic, and the bandwidth required to upload and download the videos, is what's causing the drain on Skyfire's resources. If there was any doubt that a large number of iOS users want Flash video, this goes a long way toward putting it to rest.
Skyfire browser pulled from App Store due to high demand originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:45:00 EST. A couple of weeks ago, AirPlay support for YouTube videos mysteriously disappeared from beta versions of iOS 4.2, the latest update to Apple's mobile OS. That meant users couldn't stream YouTube vids from their iPhones and iPads to their desktops and AppleTVs. With the release of the iOS 4.2 golden master to developers yesterday, though, AirPlay is back in the YouTube app, and it's better than ever.

AirPlay now has its own set of controls in the multitasking bar, just like the iPod app. That means you can control your streaming music and videos without leaving your current game of Angry Birds. Aside from YouTube and iPod, AirPlay also works in Safari and iFiles. Don't be alarmed if you can't stream to your AppleTV yet, though. Apple still needs to release an AppleTV software update, which should come out around the time iOS 4.2 is available to the public.
Apple recently let loose an update for iPhoto '11, which should prevent the database corruption bug that a few vocal users experienced upon firing up the new version for the first time. It's a pretty serious error if you happen to lose your entire photo library just because iPhoto has to "upgrade your library," so let's hope Apple's put this one to bed. Still, if you haven't upgraded yet, it might be worth making a good backup of your photo library just in case.

Get the update through the automatic built-in tool, or direct from Apple.

There was a time when Mac users enjoyed "security by obscurity." Because of the much smaller number of Mac users in the world, malware authors didn't bother targeting Apple desktops and laptops. Those days are long gone, however, and new threats that put Mac users at risk are appearing all the time.

Fortunately, there are now plenty of good antivirus options for Mac users to combat the rising number of threats. The most recent addition to the mix is Sophos, which has just released the totally free Sophos Antivirus Home Edition. All the features you'd expect from a good antivirus app are there -- like realtime protection, heuristics (the ability to detect new threats for which Sophos does not have definitions), autorun defense, and quarantining.

Sophos has been a respected name in the security business for quite some time, and you certainly can't complain about the price.
The big news in iOS 4.2 is multitasking on the iPad, but 4.2 will be available for all iOS devices. Other new features include wireless printing via AirPrint, media streaming to Airport Express devices and AppleTVs, and changing fonts in the Notes app. Of course, you'll need to be in the iPhone Developer Program, or know someone who is, to get access.

Update: as with previous iOS golden masters, reports are coming in that your device doesn't need to be twinned with a developer account to activate. So maybe anyone can install this build!
Boonana, official designation 'trojan.osx.boonana.a,' or 'OSX/Koobface.A' depending on who you want to go with, is being spread across Facebook and other social networks with the old 'Is this you in this video?' ploy. Appearing on people's Facebook pages, the link launches a Java applet that then downloads and runs an installer for the Trojan.

While it's not news that there's another Trojan on the loose for Windows, not much in the way of malware can infect Apple's often touted as secure, desktop operating system or Linux. Of course to actually install the Trojan on OS X, users will have to enter their password to authorize the installer, something that you should never do if you haven't run something intentionally yourself. As with all social engineering like this, users could blindly enter their password, thinking it's for a video. Once on the machine, Boonana runs in the background, reporting back system information and trying to spread itself via the unfortunate user's email account.

It's an interesting and rather worrying precedent to set, with cross-platform infection using Java. Apple's recently taken the decision to stop pre-installing Java with OSX due to security concerns over out-dated versions. But let's hope that this kind of thing doesn't become the norm, and for the meantime at least, be careful what you click on and trust, even if you're a Mac or Linux user.
Voilá -- one cracked iPhone. After the break, there's a video of some <strike>Spanish</strike> Portuguese-speaking guy showing you how to carry out the exploit.

This bug, which will surely cause a cascade of clenching and face palming across the world -- or at least the portions of the world that can afford iPhones -- seems to only affect the iPhone 4, or the 3GS with iOS 4.1 installed. Apple hasn't commented yet, so we only have the comment threads of Neowin and Wired to work with, and the reports are mixed. It looks like the bug does not allow the running of applications, but it does allow full access to your address book, call history, and photo album.

No doubt this will develop (or blow up) throughout the day, and we'll be sure to bring you any updates as they happen.
