This update, while not a major one, isn't all about fixing bugs either. Some important -- and previously missing -- functionality is now built in.

TweetDeck for Android now has support for landscape mode for all update detail views, and gets support for TwitPic and manual URL shortening through Bit.ly. Users can now delete direct messages that they have received, straight from within the app. It now supports Facebook's recently unveiled Single Sign-on. And alongside the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, old style retweets are now a go for protected users, favoriting tweets is now fixed on 3G in France, dismissing Places notifications is now possible, and Facebook likes and comments should stay in app.

TweetDeck for Android 1.0.3 is available in the Android Market for owners of devices running Android 1.6 and newer.
From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog. Have a flick through the gallery below if you want to explore the Android app.

If you use CrossLoop to remotely access your desktop computer -- or assist friends, family, and clients -- you've now got one more way to get connected. Those of you who also own an Android device can beta test CrossLoop's new app, which brings a good bit of the desktop app's functionality to your smartphone (or tablet).

New users will need to create a CrossLoop account to try out the app, and you'll need also an annual subscription to keep using it (a free trial is available). Subscriptions start at $19.95.

It's never a bad idea to clean up history files on your devices -- especially your smartphone. As Lifehacker points out, you might have friends constantly wanting to check out your sexy new Android phone, and they don't need to know how many Hotel Mario videos you've been watching on YouTube.

Enter HistoryEraser, which cleans more than just your browsing tracks. This handy little app can also remove search histories for the Android Market, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Earth. It'll even empty out your call log if you like.

HistoryEraser has garnered a lot of comments for the ease of removing market history alone, so it's worth checking out.
The official site hasn't been updated yet, but you can definitely pick it up from the Android Market on your phone -- the QR code is included after the break.

While pinch-to-zoom is nice, the Time Travel feature is something that Sky Map users have long been clamoring for. You can now set any time -- past or future -- and gaze up at the augmented reality heavens. The app comes pre-configured with a bunch of 'popular' times, such as the Apollo 11 moon landing and the universe-altering solar eclipse of 1919 -- or you can simply fast forward to what the sky will look like tomorrow, or during the next full moon.

If you've never played with Sky Map, now's the time to give it a go. It's free and ever so easy to use: just go outside (or stand by the window), hold your phone towards the sky... and be amazed!
Voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation is now available for Google Maps for Android in Australia and New Zealand. This feature works if you have a smartphone running Android 1.6 or newer.

Maps Navigation is integrated with Google Search and even Google Voice Search -- meaning that you don't even have to know your destination's name, you can just search for it either by typing or speaking. Walking navigation is also supported. When in this mode, your phone will vibrate when you need to make a turn. You can use the vibration alongside the voice guidance, or turn one of them off altogether.
This feature will only be accessible for owners of devices running Android 2.2 or newer and iOS 3.0 or newer (including the iPad). The only language supported at first will be English, with more options to come in the future. Got an iPad, but bored of iOS? Fancy trying out Android, even though it's not designed for tablets? Well you might be in luck, as the team that brought you Bootlace and OpeniBoot for the iPhone and iPhone 3G has released a teaser of their open source iOS boot ROM alternative running on an iPhone 4 and the iPad. With the tablet-optimized Gingerbread just around the corner, the jailbroken iPad could be the ultimate unholy Android tablet.

Check out a video of the boot ROM in action on the iPad after the break.
This merges offline marketing with the mobile Web. Google is working with five brands -- Buick, Disney, Diageo, T-Mobile and Delta Airlines -- to offer print ads, movie posters and other media that will support Google Goggles.

When you take a picture of any such ad, using Google Goggles on your Android device or iPhone, Goggles will recognize the content and allow you to click through directly to a mobile destination from that brand.

It's clear that if this experiment proves successful by any metric, Google will expand it to include as many brands as possible. If you want to give it a try, you'll have to download Google Goggles from the Android Market or the Google Mobile App from the iTunes App Store. A demo video of the new functionality is after the break.

Continue reading Google Goggles goes into marketing

Google Goggles goes into marketing originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. You can now rate places and write reviews from your phone. This is made easy by a rating widget that you can add to your homescreen. You can also rate and review places straight from any Place page -- these are in the process of being rolled out into Google mobile search results for Android and iPhone in the US.

Your ratings will personalize your search results by making them match your tastes more. If you've added friends using Hotpot on a computer, they will get recommendations of the places you like, and you will get recommendation of the places they like.

Google has promised that a Places app for the iPhone is on the way, complete with Hotpot support.
The beta version currently available from the Android Market is already a lot better than other media players, but judging by what I've seen today, it's going to get even better.

For this alpha build, Nullsoft has focused on SHOUTcast integration. The implementation is still a little rough around the edges, but it works -- it works really well. You can browse the top stations, and browse by genre or search term. Click a station to listen to it, or push-and-hold to add it to your favourites for easy access in the future. Presumably, if you listen to one station enough, it might be automatically added to your favorites, too. Rounding up the changes, there's 'My recent stations', which is exactly what it sounds like. For more details, check the gallery below.

Streaming radio for Android isn't exactly new, but this is by far the most easy-to-use and functional implementation that I've seen. You might point to Pandora, but not only is it only available to American users, it's simply not in the same league as SHOUTcast. At the time of writing there are 44,454 free SHOUTcast radio stations, and the Android app can listen to any single one of them. If you're not excited by that, let me know: I'll send some goons around to forcibly remove your smartphone.

Pulse News Reader, the popular mobile news reader app for iOS and Android, is now going free across all platforms in an effort to grab more users and, as a consequence, content partnerships. Alphonso Labs, having secured sizable venture capital funding, is attempting to turn the app into a viable business. By providing a mobile optimized solution for content consumption, they hope to switch to a content partnership model. Content providers will be able to highlight particular pieces of content within Pulse for a fee and, in doing so, hopefully drive traffic to their site. While content viewed in Pulse doesn't directly benefit page views for producers, the theory is that Pulse readers are more likely to share articles and drive new readers to the original site. At the moment, Pulse will only display what's already freely available as feeds, but by forging partnerships in this way, Pulse hopes to go beyond that.

While it might mean that more content is made available through the innovative Pulse News Reader in the near future, the immediate consequence is that Pulse is now free across all stores. So if you haven't tried it out yet, get downloading!
The new 'sensor fusion' APIs that Google will introduce in Gingerbread include quaternion, rotation matrix, linear acceleration and gravity, and will allow the gyroscope to work together with the accelerometer and the magnetometer. The new sensor fusion technology is expected to be used in augmented reality, gaming, image stabilization and navigation -- but the possibilities are truly endless and it's up to developers to come up with exciting new things based on these APIs.

This has all been made possible thanks to InvenSense, the same company that's behind the MEMS gyroscope found in the Nintendo Wii MotionPlus controller. A demo video of what to expect is after the break, and it's part of a Google Tech Talk that InvenSense's David Sachs hosted back in August.
In fact, it's hard to name more than two apps that I use on a daily basis: Angry Birds is the first, of course, and BeejiveIM is the second.

I reviewed BeejiveIM for Android last month and came away with the conclusion that it's almost faultless. The interface is smooth, and you can customize colors and backgrounds to your heart's content. Integration to multiple networks is seamless, with the ability to send both audio and photo to any and all contacts. In fact, the only real fault is its price: at $9.99 it's not the cheapest app out there -- but imagine the money you would save by instant messaging from your phone instead of drinking coffee and reading a newspaper! Your friends and family would love you more, too -- can you put a price on that?

Then again, why fret about paying for software when you can get it for free... by entering this giveaway!

We have 10 BeejiveIM for Android licenses to give away -- just leave a comment and you'll be entered into the prize draw. Full terms and conditions follow after the break!
Continue reading BeejiveIM for Android giveaway

BeejiveIM for Android giveaway originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. For $24.99, it will let you share your Android device's data connection with your computer via USB. Unlike Google's free Android tethering app, Tether works on Android 1.5 and up (the built-in app started with Android 2.2).

Now, to readers outside the US, Tether may sound like a ripoff. American cell carriers are notorious for blocking tethering and charging huge fees to enable it. Witness AT&T's $25/month fee for tethering on the iPhone. Now Tether's one-time pricetag of $25 doesn't sound so high, especially when the carriers can't arbitrarily disable it, they way they can with Google's native tethering app.

If Tether sounds good to you, but you want to try before you buy, there's a free one-week demo. Also, if you see the $49.99 price anywhere on the Tether site, that's a mistake: the Blackberry version, which also includes tethering via Wi-Fi, is $49.99. The price for the Android version will show up as $24.99 when you add it to your cart.
The app itself hasn't changed in any way, it's just that you can now find it in the Android Market in the US regardless of what your carrier of choice is. Previously, it came pre-installed on some Verizon Android smartphones, and was only available to download if you were a Verizon customer.

Features of the app, as before, include plain Web search, image search, news, local business listings and reviews, instant answers for movies and flight search. Voice search is also supported. The app homepage nicely mimics Bing.com by showing the Bing image of the day, which has clickable points that will unearth trivia related to that specific image.
Both apps now support contact sync between Yahoo Contacts and your smartphone's address book.

Yahoo Messenger for Android finally has built-in support for video calls, a feature that Yahoo has announced a while back but that until now has only made its way into Yahoo's iOS apps. There are caveats though. First, you need to be running Android 2.2 or newer to get the video chat feature. Then, it requires the installation of the Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On to work. And finally, video is only supported on the T-Mobile myTouch 4G and the HTC Evo 4G at the moment -- support for more devices is reportedly in the works. The new Messenger app now also has enhanced photo and video sharing capabilities.

The new Yahoo Mail for Android brings support for multiple accounts and enhanced photo viewing. The app creates a gallery that's automatically populated with all the photos you've received or sent, so you don't have to go to each individual message to find a specific attachment.

Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Messenger Video Add-On are available in the Android Market.
Yahoo Messenger for Android now does video calls, Yahoo Mail for Android updated originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. Google has just launched a new Android app -- YouTube Remote -- that turns your phone into the world's most expensive remote control. To use it, simply grab the app from the Android Market, sign into your YouTube (Google) account, and voilá: control of YouTube Leanback either on your PC or Google TV.

Unfortunately, as the app is only available on the American Android Market, I'm unable to test it. From the screenshot, it looks like the interface is fairly simple: you can skip, stop, and pause videos, change the volume, and add new videos to the playlist. I can see this being more useful for Google TV where you're actually some distance from your keyboard -- if you're using Leanback on your PC, it's just a matter of leaning forward to hit the pause button, or skip to the next video.

This is a beta app, incidentally. The official YouTube Android app will almost certainly be updated to contain the same Leanback connectivity in due course. The QR code is after the break.
Continue reading YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone

YouTube Remote for Android -- control Google TV or Leanback from your phone originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST. The 45 levels of Angry Birds Episode 4: The Big Setup are now available as an update from the Android Market, bringing the total number of levels on Android to a whopping 195. Version 1.42 of Angry Birds also fixes a blank screen issue on Android 1.6 devices and improves the graphics on small QVGA screens. The update is free, just as new levels on the iPhone have always been free.

In the same breath -- okay, the same blog post -- Rovio has opened preorders for Angry Birds plush toys. Although they're not downloadable, they're still worth mentioned because A) a mobile game has become so big that people want to buy real-life branded merchandise and B) the bird toys are really cute (in an angry sort of way)!

Angry Birds for Android gets 45 more levels (and Angry Birds now has plush toys!) originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. You can indeed install the latest version of Froyo, Android 2.2.1, on a jailbroken iPhone 2 or 3G, and you can do it all without a computer. Redmond Pie has put together a nice step-by-step guide to getting Android on your iPhone with Bootlace 2.1, but in short: it's as simple as installing Bootlace 2.1 from Cydia, running it, and firing up iDroid. The rest is done for you, and frankly, it seems incredibly user friendly. Funny how the jailbreak community has made the process of installing Froyo on an iPhone easier than updating many Android phones.
Get your Android on by adding the repository "http://repo.neonkoala.co.uk'" to Cydia, and jump on over to Redmond Pie for their blow-by-blow guide.
Install Android 2.2 Froyo on your jailbroken iPhone 3G over-the-air with Bootlace originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST.
