From the sandboxed Reader 'protected-mode', to the new multimedia implementations, there's quite a bit in the new Acrobat X suite of software.

Adobe Reader for Android brings quite a few changes with one of the highlights being text search, an invaluable tool for anyone reading any sort of journal or research documents, which are primarily distributed in PDF format. Password-protected documents have also made an appearance, as have several document handling tweaks like quick page jumping and 'fit-to-screen' wrapping or text reflow with the option for continuous scroll or pagination. New sharing options have also been implemented over Bluetooth, email and specifically Gmail.

Other changes including security and performance improvements have also been made with a complete list of new features available on the Reader Mobile blog.
Adobe's latest update to its professional PDF authoring solution, Acrobat X, is now available to download and purchase. Bringing Acrobat in line with the rest of the updated Adobe PDF universe, this update brings with it a couple of new program features and tighter integration into the Acrobat.com working environment.

New guided 'Actions' allow you to automate repetitive tasks, and more importantly, share user created pre-defined routines across several users or computers. The use of Actions could enable an automated document creation system, implemented by experienced users or IT professionals, and made available for everyone else in the company. Adobe's also rolled in a bit of Microsoft SharePoint integration, featuring checking in and out of documents for review or editing, allowing better, more controlled document collaboration. PDF Portfolios also makes an entrance with unified layouts, visual themes and color palettes, helping maintain document uniformity similar to templates and color schemes in other Office suites. Speaking of Office, PDF files can now be saved as Word or Excel files for further editing, a nice feature if you want to send a document to a colleague without access to the Acrobat suite.

There's not a lot in there for your average user, but then again Acrobat X is aimed at institutions, business and education. Two versions of Acrobat X are now available, with Acrobat X Standard setting you back $299 standalone, or $139 upgrade, and Acrobat X Pro taking $449, or $199 for an upgrade, out of your budget. The Acrobat X Suite is expected to arrive by the end of the month for the not inconsiderable sum of $1199, or $799 for an upgrade. Ouch.
Adobe Acrobat X Standard and Pro now available for trial and purchase originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 05:07:00 EST. Adobe has brought its once Windows-only professional audio authoring suite, Audition, to the Mac platform with the release of a public beta. For those of you who've missed Audition in the past, it's Adobe's solution for recording, mixing, editing, and mastering audio and vocal tracks -- an answer to Apple's Logic Studio, Avid Technology's Pro Tools, and others.

Bringing Audition to OS X enables Adobe to compete directly with Apple's aforementioned professional audio mastering suite and reach another side of the creative industry: those who customarily use Macs. Adobe is actively encouraging users to download and test Audition on Apple's desktop OS, so if you're at all creative and fancy trying out something that's a step up from GarageBand, then head on over to Adobe Labs and get your download on.
Adobe Audition for Mac beta now available originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. Adobe has fixed some critical zero-day security vulnerabilities that were reportedly already being exploited in the wild. If you're on Windows, Mac or Linux, you'll want to make sure you've updated to Adobe Flash Player 10.1.102.64. Android users will have to wait til Monday for an update.

One of the bugs fixed in this release of Flash was the CVE-2010-3654 vulnerability, which affected users of Flash, Acrobat and Adobe Reader. Adobe says the bug "could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system." Adobe's security bulletin also admits that this vulnerability was already being actively exploited by attackers against Acrobat and Reader 9.x, but not against Flash. Those Acrobat and Reader security updates aren't coming until the week of November 15th, though.

Yesterday, Adobe announced the next version of Adobe Connect, its Flash Player-based Web conferencing and online meeting solution. For those unfamiliar with Adobe Connect, previously known as Macromedia Breeze and Presedia Publishing System, it is Adobe's browser-based answer to things like Cisco's video conferencing systems, Citrix's GoToMeeting, or in a very basic sense, Skype's screen sharing.

Online meetings have become more and more important as the cost of travel continues to rise, while budgets get slashed. Adobe Connect 8 attempts to reach out to more than just the desktop, with free support for Android [Market] and the iPhone [iTunes], allowing connected meetings on the go using devices that don't natively support Flash. An AIR-based client has also been made available for desktop management of your meetings, as well as access to recordings for later distribution.

Adobe Connect is primarily aimed at the Enterprise and Education market, but an online-only hosted plan is available for individuals for $55 a month per host. It's not something your bedroom blogger is going to use, but if you're an Enterprise manager looking for a new meeting solution, Adobe Connect 8 is worth throwing into your line of fire.
Adobe Connect 8 Flash-based Web conferencing solution announced with Android and iPhone support originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 05:21:00 EST. That means that Photoshop.com videos are now playable on any device that supports H.264, including Apple's iPhone and iPad, regardless of whether it supports Adobe's own Flash Player.

The Dreamweaver team's HTML5 Video Player widget, meanwhile, plays video using either browser support or the Flash plugin, as needed. It's compatible with Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari and Opera, and it will pick a compatible video codec for each browser.

Developers who want to use the plugin in their own sites can also customize the look of the player using CSS. To access the widget, you can either use Dreamweaver's widget browser or download a separate Adobe AIR app.

Adobe's Photoshop.com and Dreamweaver get HTML5 playback option originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 18:30:00 EST. The tool will also tell you which elements can't be converted, like animated masks, filters and actionscript. The result: something nearly identical to your original Flash file, but in HTML.

The tool exports the individual elements of the Flash project, meaning you can find a graphic or animation within the HTML file and use it independently of the rest of the project. The HTML created by this tool even works on an iPhone or iPad, because both use WebKit browsers. This tool isn't a catch-all for making sure that Flash developers can serve users of every platform out there, but it automates something that previously took hours to do by hand.

Continue reading Adobe Flash-to-HTML5 conversion tool now in demo stage

Adobe Flash-to-HTML5 conversion tool now in demo stage originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 20:15:00 EST. This can be exploited to run malicious code on the victims' computers.

Affected are Flash Player 10.1.85.3 and earlier on Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris; Flash Player 10.1.95.2 and earlier for Android; Adobe Reader 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows, Mac and Unix-based operating systems; Adobe Acrobat 9.4 and earlier 9.x versions for Windows and Mac.

Adobe is working to patch this vulnerability and is hoping to have an updated version of Flash for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android by November 9. Updates (that will include the patch) for Adobe Reader and Acrobat are expected during the week of November 15 for Windows and Mac OS X.

Unfortunately, this will no doubt prove to be a popular attack vector for malware authors until the updates arrive. Hopefully Adobe will respond more quickly to such cases in the future.
Adobe announced yesterday that you'll soon be able to make VoIP calls right from Flash Player. A server solution from Adobe called Flash Media Gateway will enable you to make calls to landlines, cell phones, and computers using an SIP gateway. And if you happen to have a webcam (and who doesn't these days), it will even support video chat using H.264.

The interconnection fun doesn't stop there -- AIR apps will apparently get the same capability. That means that you might soon get cross-platform VoIP apps based around Adobe's AIR runtime, which recently made the jump to TVs, tablets, and smartphones. With Flash getting constantly knocked down in the embedded video market, it looks like Adobe's pulling out all the stops in order to keep it relevant. If Flash Media Gateway can use AIR apps to enable chat between the big screen TV and your tablet or smartphone, then color us excited.
Adobe Flash Media Gateway enables VoIP and video conferencing from Flash Player and AIR originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 06:00:00 EST.
Adobe let-fly its ROME free public preview over the weekend, for use on the desktop in AIR, or direct in the browser. Project ROME is an attempt to blend the kind of static content creation that InDesign allows, plus interactive media elements and a bit of PowerPoint thrown in for good measure, all wrapped in a cloud-based solution. It's difficult to describe exactly what ROME is, as it does so much -- but if you think about it as a simplified multimedia publishing solution you're just about there. Adobe describes it as "an all-in-one content creation and publishing application that lets virtually anyone at home, work or school inject the power of graphics, photos, text, video, audio, animation and interactivity into everyday projects."

Project ROME allows you to create, collaborate and share a whole host of projects using Acrobat.com, Google Docs, Facebook and Twitter. Adobe's even created an Education-specific release of ROME, partnering with several large schools, allowing the creation of interactive teaching materials with "safe, secure use of content.'"

After a quick play, we can safely say our days of using Paint are over. Project ROME seems incredibly simple to use, with a plethora of templates, text, shape and drawing manipulation tools, support for image and file import, plus embedding of maps and other interactive media -- it's certainly a jack-of-all-trades. For a professional designer, ROME will feel over simplified and limited, but for your average Joe, Adobe's target market for the project, we might have a winner on our hands. Whether it'll stand up to more rigorous use, we'll have to wait to find out, but it's certainly worth a try.

If you're still not sure, Adobe's provided a quick promotional video to better describe what Project ROME can do, which we've included after the break.
Continue reading Adobe announces Project ROME public preview, brings all-in-one content creation to the cloud

Adobe announces Project ROME public preview, brings all-in-one content creation to the cloud originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 07:00:00 EST. With support for hardware features, such as accelerometers, GPS, cameras, microphones, and multi-touch, and hardware acceleration (currently only available for Windows) to make sure that the experience is still smooth, AIR could make quite a convincing write-it-once, get-it-out-on-everything platform. Adobe's even leveraging its Adobe InMarket to help developers get their AIR-driven apps packaged and into various app stores, minus its 30 percent cut of course.
Whether you'll be able to get AIR apps through Apple's approval process remains to be seen, but given Apple's relaxed stance, anything's possible. Excited Flex and Flash developers should be able to get the SDK imminently (currently still showing 2.0.2 at the time of writing), while the rest of us will have to sit back and wait with baited breath to see whether AIR 2.5 improves on its rather clunky forefathers.
Adobe AIR 2.5 announced, supports smartphones, tablets, TVs and desktops originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 05:04:00 EST. There are plenty of people who just assumed Adobe and HTML5 would mix like oil and water -- thanks to the whole Flash Player thing. In truth, however, Adobe has been delivering Web development tools like Dreamweaver for quite some time -- so it stands to reason that they'd offer HTML5 goodies at some point.

Illustrator and Dreamweaver already received add-ons which bring HTML5 kung fu, and now Adobe has announced a widget which will cause some to think that they've lost their marbles.

It's a hybrid HTML5/Flash video widget. Says Adobe, "the limited browser support for the HTML5 <video> tag has forced web designers to scramble for a solution that would work across platforms as well as browsers." The new player switches seamlessly from HTML5 to Flash if the <video> tag isn't supported and works on any compatible browser -- desktop, mobile, TV, refrigerator -- you get the idea.

The release isn't really a surprise. After all, Adobe is a founding member of the Open Screen Project. To be truly "open screen," that means extending the olive branch to devices which don't run Adobe Flash in order to preserve a code-once-display-everywhere experience.

Adobe is on a mission to bolster its Acrobat.com services, bringing direct integration with the recently announced Acrobat X, and new tools like Adobe CreatePDF and Adobe SendNow. In an effort to make Acrobat.com available to more users globally, translation efforts are currently underway to make Acrobat.com and all of its services available in both Italian and Spanish. Going live in the near future, Italians and Spaniards will finally be able to join their English, French, German, and Japanese friends, who can already take advantage of the majority of Acrobat.com services in their native languages.

That's great news if you want to use Acrobat.com to do collaborative work with colleagues from other non-English speaking countries. Who says we never cover EU-applicable stuff?
Acrobat.com services learning Italian and Spanish originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 08:00:00 EST.
This morning, Adobe announced the latest iteration to their Acrobat platform, Acrobat X. Products getting the bump to Acrobat 10 include, Adobe Reader, Acrobat Suite, and Acrobat Pro and Standard. Most of these will probably ship around the beginning of December given that their free shipping promotion for pre-orders ends on the 30th of November. Adobe Reader X will be available for free download next month, bringing with it support for even more complex PDF files.

According to the announcement, highlights for the Acrobat X family include support for PDF files with greater content types, such as videos, drawings, spreadsheets, email messages, and many other multimedia elements, which will all be interactive. You'll also be able to make and share notes on a PDF, use a "Protected Mode" within Reader (which should help protect you against malicious PDF files), and directly access Acrobat.com services from within the application. There's no mention of speed improvements, but with all that added content support, I doubt Adobe Reader X will be any less of a behemoth than Reader 9.

Adobe also touts "Expanded PDF access via mobile devices with free Adobe Reader for Android, Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry Tablet OS" in its announcement, indicating that Adobe has mobile versions of Reader in the works for the brand new WP7 and RIM's yet to be released BlackBerry Tablet OS, which will join the already available Adobe Reader for Android.
Adobe unveils Acrobat X plus Adobe Reader for Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry Tablet OS originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 04:40:00 EST. It combines a custom lens for your camera and a software component for your Mac or PC, and allows you to focus on anything you want, after you've shot the photo. I'm not clear on all the technical details, but the basic idea is that Plenoptic captures hundreds of miniature versions of your image, which it then uses to construct the larger image.

So, you're not really changing the focus of your image with Plentoptic, you're actually rebuilding an entirely new image where the focus is on a different plane. That way, you can choose to accentuate the foreground or the background of the image without losing any detail.

This is some serious future-flying-car-magic tech we're talking about. It's not commercially available yet, but it's awesome to see what we'll be able to do with digital photographs in the future.

There are all sorts of compelling reasons to try an alternative PDF reader, security not being the least. Adobe Reader is also quite stingy with its functionality - you can't even annotate PDFs.

Nitro PDF Reader is an alternative reader with a modern-looking interface, and it offers generous annotation options. Unlike Foxit Reader, Nitro doesn't appear to watermark your PDF when you annotate it. You can highlight sections of the document, add text, add sticky-notes, and stamp your signature (not a digital signature - just a scanned one).

If you're lucky, you may also be able to extract graphics and text from your PDF. Ironically, I was unable to extract the images from Nitro's own sample PDF (the Welcome file that comes with the reader). Another thing you should know is that it's quite a memory hog. I tried the same document with both Foxit and Nitro; Foxit clocked in at 8MB, while Nitro consumed a whopping 63MB. Again, this is for the same exact one-page document. This is even more than Acrobat Reader 9.3, which consumed 50MB for that same document.

Still, if you've got a little RAM to spare (and most of us do), I think Nitro is a worthy contender, if only for its annotation capabilities and simple interface.

Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. According to Adobe:

Chrome users are already protected! Versions above 6.0.472.62 are patched. This version number refers to the Stable channel, but the latest Beta channel update also has the same update (with a different version number).

Patches for all other operating systems (including Android) are to be available today.

Adobe Reader isn't protected yet - the patch is due around October 4. On the plus side, there isn't a known exploit in the wild for this vulnerability in Reader.

What better day for Adobe to finally make good with their promise of a 64-bit Flash player plug-in?

I can't think of one -- well, apart from "a year ago," but still -- better now than never. With the arrival of Internet Explorer 9 today, I'm definitely pleased to see that Adobe has delivered a Flash player that will run in my 64-bit browser. At the moment, however, I'm also a little bummed -- since I just finished installing IE9 on my work system, which is running 32-bit Windows 7.

But wait, there's more good news! "Square," as Adobe is calling it, isn't just available for 64-bit Windows users -- Mac and Linux users can take it for a spin as well. Adobe is claiming performance increases of up to 35% in IE9 "compared to previous versions of IE." I'm assuming they mean 32-bit versions, so the gain is probably due to the combination of IE9 + Flash Square, not the 64-bit Flash player on its own.

Here's hoping the 64-bit plug-in brings enhanced security to the table. We're all getting tired of reading about the exploits, aren't we?

Show us your surprised face.

Unlike a lot of the Flash warnings we see, however, this one is actively being exploited, and a successful attack allows untrusted code to be remotely executed. That's bad, especially since Adobe's post states that the patch won't be arriving for about two weeks.

Flash can't seem to catch a break, can it? If it's not being slammed for hogging CPUs, running down batteries, and not being "open," it's being smacked around by yet another security shortcoming.

Adobe products continue to be a juicy target for bad guys, and so far, Adobe's increased attention to security seems to be making little difference -- except, perhaps, for calling more attention to little vexations like this one.
Adobe warns of another new critical flaw in Flash originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 17:00:00 EST.
