Every year Google releases a zeitgeist, a list of everything that is popular on the web based on their search data. But what if once a year just isn't enough for you? Then you turn to Evri.

Evri is a site currently in beta that uses news sources on the web to chart the popularity of different subjects in the categories of People, Places and Things. Clicking on the individual circles in the flow chart opens up a list of news articles in which they appear. Using Evri.com is certainly one way to keep up to date on whats hot and what's not.
Evri.com: Zeitgeist for news originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 05 Jul 2008 10:00:00 EST.
Brad Fitzpatrick, the developer responsible for Livejournal and OpenID is up to it again. This time, he let us know on the Google Code blog, that the API for Social Graph is now available.

Social Graph is an API that functions like a Pagerank for social relationships. The idea is that when you join a new social network you don't have to manually add previous relationships because it can populate your list based on your connections from other networks, your blog, or the web.

Social Graph works by indexing sites that use the XFN (XHTML Friends Network) and FOAF (Friend Of A Friend) open standards in order to gauge relationships between people.

Google's social graph originally appeared on Download Squad on Sat, 02 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Have no idea what an ACE file is? Got a few ISO files laying around but you have no idea what they are? Well peek inside using Freeware archival utility TUGZip. TUGZip opens every archive format you could possibly care about, and several more, you probably don't.

Archive formats - ZIP, 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, BH, BZ2, CAB, CPIO, DEB, GCA, GZ, IMP, JAR, LHA (LZH), LIB, RAR, RPM, SQX, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TAZ, YZ1

Disc image formats - BIN, C2D, IMG, ISO and Nero's NRG

TUGZip can also create archives in most of these formats, Including self extracting archives. All the wile using a 3 pane explorer interface (or you can change it via options to a more standard one or two pane. TUGzip also includes an explorer context addon, so you can compress files into your favorite archive, without even having to open the program. All of this, and blazing fast too.

[ via Ghacks ]
TUGzip: Decompress anything originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST.

Crossloop is a remote desktop application with an easy to understand interface. You can literally get up and running in minutes without knowing a thing about ports or protocols.

There are other applications that will let you connect to another PC over ther internet like LogmeIn or VNC. But neither is as easy to use as Crossloop. Normally, remote desktop applications require that the host PC to run a server which can be complicated to set up, not so with Crossloop. The person needing assistance just installs crossloop and runs the main application, then goes to share, and gives the access code to whoever is helping them. That person then enters access code and all the difficult stuff is handled by the Crossloop server.

Crossloop recently created a social network, connecting people who have problems with people who want to fix them. You can even build up expertise, a type of karma system that reflects on how effective you are.

Crossloop: Remote Desktop for everyone. originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 10:00:00 EST.

Defraggler, a free Defrag utility from Piriform, the makers of CCleaner and Recuva has released a new beta.

Unlike the default windows defragmenter, Defraggler allows you to defrag individual files or folders. Often, if a program isn't running smoothly, it just needs a quick defrag and its ready to go. All with a beautiful (and colorful) GUI. Heres some of the changes.

More stable

Added support for multiple drive maps

added 64-bit support

USB drive support

UI Tweaks

A single EXE, Defraggler is portable. So it works just fine from a removable USB drive.
Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Freeware, Beta

Defraggler drops a beta, picks up 64-bit support originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. It's open source, relatively exploit free, and extensible, so you can make it whatever you want. It's also not Internet Explorer; So that's a plus.

What really helped to establish Firefox as the favorite of the tech savvy is tabs.
