If you're a Mac user but find that theFinder just doesn't do it for you, check out Path Finder, a great replacement for the file manager, which has just beenupdated to Version 4. This is a major upgrade, with a raft of new features, including full integration with OSX 10.4features such as Spotlight and 256x256 icons, along with lots of features you won't find in the Finder. These include abuilt-in search engine (in case you really don't like spotlight), tabbed windows, and tons of modules, including a filepreviewer, text editor, PDF viewer, and terminal tool. Path Finder is $34.95; if you purchased Path Finder 3 afterSeptember 29, 2004, you're eligible for a free upgrade.
Filed under: Utilities, Macintosh, Productivity, Shareware

Path Finder 4 is here originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 17 Jan 2006 10:50:00 EST.

Along with all of the newhardware announced at Macworld, Apple managed to release a raft of software upgrades as well, including updatedversions of the OSX operating system, productivity suite iWork, and the iLife media bundle. ILife '06 includes upgradesto iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, along with a new app, iWeb, which provides tools for web site creation, podcasting andblogging, along with one-click publishing to Apple's .Mac service. Unlike the default mode of most other blogging tools, such as Typepad, Wordpress and Blogger, iWeb is designed to be used offline, with posts uploaded to .Mac after they'recreated in the desktop application. Other updates to iLife include podcast-editing tools in Garage Band and the abilityto create RSS feeds for iPhoto libraries. ILife '06 comes bundled with all new Macs, or is available from Apple for $79.As usual, there's no upgrade discount for owners of previous versions of the software. Improvements to iWork include new3D charting modes and new image editing tools. IWork '06 is also available for $79. OSX 10.4.4 is an incrementalupgrade, and includes several new Dashboard Widgets, including a Google widget and an improved calendar widget. Oh, andthis one's free for users of OSX 10.4. Woo hoo.
Filed under: Business, Design, Internet, Macintosh, Podcasting, Blogging, Productivity, Apple

Apple updates iLife, iWork, .Mac and OSX originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 11 Jan 2006 20:50:00 EST.
If you've been counting on being able to run Windows on those new Intel-based Macs, Apple's not about to make it easyfor you -- despite Apple's newagreement with Microsoft not to block Windows on the new computers. According to Apple SVP Phil Schiller, the newMacs announced yesterday (those being the Intel iMac and MacBook Pro) may not be able to run current versions ofWindows due to the fact that the computers will boot using the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI), rather than atraditional BIOS (current Power PC Macs use Open Firmware). EFI was developed by Intel and allows a number of advancedfeatures, including the ability to connect to the Internet from a command shell before the OS is loaded. Since EFI wasdeveloped after Windows XP, it's not supported by the current or earlier version of Windows (it is, however, supportedby 64-bit versions, but the new Macs are 32-bit, so it's back to square one). However, all is not lost: Windows Vistawill support EFI. So, if you're a Vista beta tester and have ordered a new iMac or MacBookPro, get those install CDsout; the rest of you will have to wait for the official Vista release, or find a way to hack XP to boot using EFI.
Filed under: OS Updates, Hardware, Windows, Macintosh, Apple, Microsoft

No XP on Intel Macs originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 11 Jan 2006 20:36:00 EST.
Fifteen years ago, while most otherpeople were probably unwrapping presents, Tim Berners-Lee was giving one to the world: On Christmas Day, 1990, he putthe finishing touches on WorldWideWeb, the first web browser. The browser ran on a NeXT computer, and included abuilt-in HTML editor as well. Of course, there wasn't a whole lot to browse, given that Berners-Lee had launched thefirst web site just a month earlier. But the birth of WorldWideWeb, and its companion line-mode browser, was a majorstep toward the creation of the web as we know it today, and was a huge Christmas present from Berners-Lee to the restof the computing world. So, thanks, Sir Tim, and happy anniversary!
Happy 15th Birthday, Web Browser! originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 26 Dec 2005 12:02:00 EST.

Areall of those open windows taking up a little too much space on your desktop? Want to make them disappear without havingto minimize them? Give today's free file, WinRoll, a try. It can makeyour windows "roll up" into the title bar (a trick familiar to users of Mac OS9), and can also let you makeyour windows transparent at will (a trick familiar to users of Windows Vista). A handy utility that does just a coupleof things and does them very well.
Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Open Source

WinRoll: Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 23 Dec 2005 22:55:00 EST.

There's an interesting series of posts over at theblog of John Flowers, about how he believes his small searchcompany has suffered at the hands of Google. According to Flowers, Google recently banned his company's spiders, afterinitially shmoozing with him about a possible deal. Flowers posted a few weeks ago about how, after conducting talkswith Google, the company suddenly stopped responding to his calls, though it did continue to access Kozoru's privateinterface. Then, apparently without warning, not only did Google stop taking Kozoru's calls, but stopped taking itstraffic as well. Flowers speculates that Kozoru - which created a meta-search engine designed to pull moreintelligible results from Google searches - was banned after Google "couldn't decide how or if [Kozoru's]results were able to be monetized -- after all, less results means less space for ads and so forth." Sounds likeGoogle's playing a bit of hardball here, which the company has every right to do. But it does sort of fly in the faceof Goog's whole "don't be evil" thing. Ofcourse, I doubt Google's shareholders see this as evil; the company is protecting shareholder value, and if Kozoru getsin the way of that, hey, that's life in the big time. Still, it does seem like the whole "don't be evil" thingis getting a little old. Goog's a big company now, and is acting like one. It's time for it to stop pretendingotherwise.

Did Google deep-six Kozoru? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 23 Dec 2005 21:13:00 EST.
Forget those Intel-based Macs (well, not really, but humor me for a minute here). According to TUAW, the real news atMacworld this January may be the first public preview of the next version of OSX, version 10.5, aka Leopard. Right nowit's just speculation, but TUAW makes a reasonable case for the idea that Stevie J. may use his annual shindig to showoff more than just some shiny new laptops and iPods.

Read
Filed under: OS Updates, News, Macintosh, Apple

Apple to preview Leopard at Macworld? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 23 Dec 2005 20:47:00 EST.
With rumors swirling that Microsoft was about to acquire the company - and some siteseven claiming that the deal was done - Opera Software has issued a firm denial, saying thatthe company has "not been bought, and we have not received any offers." So, there you have it. Though, Isomehow suspect that Opera would be more than happy to accept an offer (though I don't think one will be forthcomingfrom Microsoft; the company has invested a little too much in IE7 to abandon it at this stage).
Opera denies MS takeover rumors originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 23 Dec 2005 11:57:00 EST.
Admit it. It's getting down to thewire, and you haven't picked out gifts for everyone, or even sent out all of your cards yet. One popular last-minutesolution is to send out e-cards, and here's one way to make those cards a little more interesting. Instead of justusing the canned cards available on countless sites, design your own. Don't have the time or Photoshop chops? Noproblem. Just use a canned template and plug in your own images, words and whatever else you need to make the cardwork. One good source is the scrapbook community, where designers have a wealth of templates available at prices as lowas $3.00, most of which can be used both for e-cards and for printed ones - though, unless you're going to springfor FedEx or deliver your cards by hand, the latter isn't a likely scenario this year.
Filed under: Fun, Holiday Gift Guide

Gift Guide: Greeting card templates originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 22 Dec 2005 22:45:00 EST.
If you're looking for another desktop search tool to add to your arsenal, check out Watson, a contextual search barthat can generate realtime results based on the content of whatever you're working on in another window, such as abrowser session, Outlook message or Word document. That could get a little annoying, but could also come in handy nowand then, if you need to quickly get a piece of info that will help you fill out a document you're working on. It canalso use the indexes compiled by Google Desktop or Windows Desktop Search, which saves you from having to re-index yourwhole hard drive if you want to use it as a desktop search tool. And, yes, it's free (though, of course, there's a Proversion available, at prices of up to $199 for a lifetime subscription).

[Via The Office Weblog]

Watson: Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 22 Dec 2005 21:33:00 EST.
If you're into heavy-duty blogging, there's one piece of advice that may stand above all others (well, other than theold tip to avoid blogging about your job if you want to stay employed): work offline. There's nothing more frustratingthan spilling your guts in an entry only to have it fall victim to a sudden Firefox hiccup. And, while there are quitea few decent offline editors, ecto is, without a doubt, one of the best. It's cross-platform, works with most popularblogging platforms including Blogger, Movable Type and WordPress, and it's now available for 20% off (from Fridaythrough Monday only). That's $14.36, instead of the usual (and eminently reasonable) $17.95. At that price, you can'tafford not to work offline.

[Via TUAW]
Filed under: Internet, Windows, Macintosh, Blogging, Shareware

Get ecto for 20% off originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 22 Dec 2005 21:01:00 EST.
You might recall that just a few months ago, invites for the WordPress.com blogging service began showing up on eBay,something that WordPress developer Matt Mullenweg greeted with thinly disguised glee. At the time, I opined that therewas something a little unseemly about a developer gloating that his attempts to create buzz and limit usage during abeta period had resulted in an inflated secondary market for his products. I still think that's the case, but it lookslike I'm in the minority, since it turns out that the Windows Live Messenger team over at Microsoft is pleased as punchthat their invites have begun showing up on the 'Bay. Gloating on their blog, they declare: "If you must get an invite and you don'tmind spending some money on it check out the auctions here. The Messenger team has a pool going to guess what thehighest selling point will be." Great, guys. Remind me to start a pool to guess how much people are willing to payfor bootleg copies of XP and Office, also widely available on eBay.
Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Microsoft, Freeware

Windows Live Messenger invites on eBay - with Microsoft's blessing originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 22 Dec 2005 17:42:00 EST.
What do you get for the geek who haseverything? How about some software company swag? Software companies large and small offer everything from the Google Goo pictured above, to Mozilla's plush firefox dolls, to logo-pimping t-shirts. Some of my favoritesinclude the non-logo t-shirts from Mac developer Panic Software (they includeone featuring the Mac "spinner" and one that boasts "i make macintosh software"). If you really wantto impress, you can hunt down collector-level swag on eBay, including old Apple lapel pins and Microsoft bobble-headdolls.

Gift Guide: Software company swag originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 21 Dec 2005 21:52:00 EST.
It's just one line in a press release about Google's $1 billioninvestment in AOL, but it's a good one for anyone who has gotten frustrated with having to run multiple IM clients, kludge a link to Google Talk via Jabber, or just skip running Google Talk in favor of the dozen or so other IM clientsout there. According to Google, one ramification of the investment will be to allow "Google Talk and AIM instantmessaging users to communicate with each other, provided certain conditions are met." At this point, I have noidea whether those conditions are technical, financial or both, but it makes perfect sense for the two to combine theirefforts - after all, AOL already has AIM and ICQ under its umbrella and interoperating. There's no reason not todo the same with Google Talk (and, chances are, it'll make selling ads into the client a little easier as well).

Google Talk to work with AIM originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 21 Dec 2005 15:47:00 EST.
Want to turn one computer into two? If you're running Linux and have a box that can supporttwo monitors, you can do it for free with a two-user license ofDesktop Multiplier. Once installed, the program lets two users access simultaneously, with what the developer saysare only minor performance hits (though we imagine that it might be a little tougher if both users are running graphicsor processor-intensive apps). The developer, UserFul, also offers a commercial version of the program that can handle upto 10 users on a single PC. Of course, this only works with Linux; if you want to do something similar with a Windowsbox, you may have to spend about $200 for something like the Applica U2 Lite, a "reverse KVM" that installs ina PCI slot. Or you can always spend another $100 and get an ultra-cheap PC.

Desktop Multiplier - Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 20 Dec 2005 09:05:00 EST.
Here's a quick-and-dirty hack to help you accesssites that your company's firewall may block: Just use Google's language tools to access the site. You can set yourparameters to "translate" the site from Engish to English, and then plug in any URL:

http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.downloadsquad.com

It may not work withevery firewall, or with every site you want to visit, but it could be worth a try if you need to, say, finish youronline holiday shopping and your boss is an ecommerce-blocking Scrooge.
Filed under: Internet, Web services, Google

How To: Use Google's language tools as a proxy server originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 20 Dec 2005 01:24:00 EST.
If you have a digital SLR camera, you may be familiar with RAW files, the uncompressed, uncorrected"digital negatives" that your camera can produce. While these images can be edited in programs likePhotoshop or the image editing application supplied with your camera, they can't be viewed as thumbnails in WindowsExplorer. That is, unless you download and install today's free file, MicrosoftRAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer. The program lets Windows treat RAW files saved by Canon and Nikon cameras like anyother images, so you can preview them with ease. In addition to displaying thumbnails in Explorer, the programincludes a Picture and Fax Viewer lookalike that can be used for basic image viewing and printing.
Filed under: Photo, Utilities, Windows, Microsoft, Shareware

Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer: Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 19 Dec 2005 11:42:00 EST.
Why on earth would you want to get someone a holiday gift made from dead trees? For one simplereason: Linux Format magazine, from the UK's Future Publishing, comes withtons of free software (well, free after the $15 each issue will run you in the US). In fact, many issues comewith pre-configured distros that you can install and run instantly. Yes, you (or your gift recipient) candownload most of the software that comes bundled with the magazine. But even with a broadband connection, it'ssometimes nice to get that software delivered to your door on a CD or DVD that you can just pop into your drive and run(especially if you don't want to deal with burning discs from ISOs). And, for the Mac or Windows fan on your list,Future also publishes Mac Format and PC Format, both of which also come with software - though you're not goingto get a copy of OSX or XP with your magazine.

Gift Guide: Linux Format magazine originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 19 Dec 2005 10:35:00 EST.
The last time Bill Gates was on the cover of TimeMagazine (a scant seven months ago), he shared it with his latest toy, the Xbox 360. This week, he's in differentcompany: as co-recipient of Time's "Person of the Year" honor, he shares the cover of this week's issue with hiswife, Melinda, and U2 frontman Bono. Their joint claim to fame: "being shrewd about doing good, rewiring politicsand re-engineering justice, making mercy smarter and hope strategic and then daring the rest of us to follow."Bill and Melinda, of course, are being honored for their work with their eponymous foundation (one of our 10 Reasons to Love Microsoft),which the magazine says has already saved at least 700,000 lives. Time calls the Gates Foundation a "kinder, humbler Microsoft-one designed to spend money, not make it." It's enough to make you give your copy ofWindows a big hug - almost.

Time People of the Year: Bill, Melinda ... and Bono originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 19 Dec 2005 02:18:00 EST.
I know some of you are going to flame me for recommending a macro program that goes for $79.99 when there are plenty of free alternatives out there, but hear me out. And remember, this is a gift guide; I'm not suggesting you get this for yourself, but for someone who might be less technically inclined, but who can still benefit from some automation of repetitive tasks on their PCs. QuicKeys has been around for close to 20 years, and is one of the most mature macro programs on the market. For much of that time, it's been cross-platform, though it's far better-known to Mac fans than Windows users - perhaps because the Mac has always been less keyboard-centric than Windows, making the need for a solid macro utility more apparent. Creating even complex macros with QuicKeys is easy, and requires no knowledge of a specialized language or syntax. Give QuicKeys to mom, dad or anyone else who needs macros but doesn't want to spend hours creating and debugging them. They'll thank you for it - with one keystroke.
Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Macintosh, Productivity, Commercial, Holiday Gift Guide

Gift Guide: QuicKeys for macros with muscle originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 16 Dec 2005 19:11:19 EST.
After months of speculation over Time Warner's plans for AOL, the fix is finally in: Google will pay TW a whopping $1 billion for a 5% stake in the business, giving the AOL group an estimated value of $20 billion. The deal locks the two companies together in a more formal way - AOL is already Google's top source of ad revenue - and leaves Microsoft on the outs in its efforts to carve out a more significant chunk of the sponsored search market.
Filed under: News, Web services, Google

Google takes $1 billion AOL stake originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 16 Dec 2005 16:25:24 EST. Just go to m.gmail.com, log in, and start reading your mail on that tiny screen. You may even want to use the mobile version on a PC, if you're stuck on a dial-up connection and need to quickly get into your mail. (But don't tell anyone at Google that - the mobile version is ad-free, and I suspect that the googleplex gods wouldn't be too happy if users started switching en masse to it.)

[Thanks, Nolo]

Filed under: E-mail, Web services, Google, Freeware

Gmail goes mobile originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 16 Dec 2005 13:45:33 EST.
I don't know if it was the EFF's tough talk or the fact that Google is now doing the same thing that angered Warner/Chappell in the first place, but either way, it looks like the record company has backed down on its threats against tiny freeware program pearLyrics, and issued an apology to developer Walter Ritter. In a joint statement, Ritter and Warner/Chappell CEO Richard Blackstone said that "in both tone and substance, [Warner/Chappell's earlier cease-and-desist] letter was an inappropriate manner in which to [express the company's concerns about the product]. Warner/Chappell apologizes to Walter Ritter and pearworks." Unfortunately, the letter doesn't say anything about letting Ritter revive pearLyrics, and for now, the program still seems dead. So, three cheers for the little guy, but it looks like Warner may be the big winner here, since they've got a PR victory in place, while pearLyrics remains dormant.

Warner/Chappell to pearLyrics: We're sorry, really originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 16 Dec 2005 13:21:33 EST.

Software or web-service subscriptions make great gifts: They don't need to be wrapped, you can order at the last minute, and you can find a program or service for just about anyone (or at least anyone who owns a computer). With this in mind, we present our holiday gift guide, featuring products and services we've picked because we like them and use them ourselves (and, no, nobody has paid us or given us any freebies). We'll add a new item every day between now and the end of the year, and you can always click here to catch up on those you've missed.

If you're looking for an office suite for yourself, and you don't want to deal with Microsoft Office, there's one recommendation you'll almost always hear: OpenOffice. After all, it's free, it's (mostly) compatible with MS Office, and it has most of the features you'll need for day-to-day work. But if you want to give someone an office suite as a gift, you may want to consider another alternative: OpenOffice's big brother, Star Office. Why would you pay $69.95 for a piece of software that's virtually identical to something you can download for free? One word: support. A StarOffice license comes with 60 days of free tech support, including actual toll-free phone support. True, the support is limited to just three incidents during those 60 days. But, as they say on TV: "Not getting a call from Aunt Gert at 2AM because she can't remember how to spell-check her text - priceless."

Filed under: Windows, Linux, Office, Productivity, Commercial, Open Source, Holiday Gift Guide

Gift Guide: Open an office with StarOffice originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 15 Dec 2005 14:36:49 EST.
The second release candidate of Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 hasn't even been officially released yet, but that hasn't stopped eWeek from reviewing the program, and writer Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols likes what he sees. In contrast to earlier versions of T-bird, which Vauhgan-Nichols says were plagued by "poor search functionality and memory leaks,"
1.5 may well be "poised to regain its good name and far, far more." In a detailed review, Vaughan-Nichols says that 1.5RC2 resolves many of Thunderbird's outstanding bugs, and searching email folders containing as many as 1,500 messages is reliable, as are the program's spam filters and handling of multiple mail accounts. Ready to give it a try? You can download RC2 test builds (should they be called RCCs?) from Mozilla, or wait a few more days, since RC2 should be out the door before the holidays.

Filed under: Windows, Macintosh, Linux, E-mail, Mozilla, Open Source

Thunderbird RC2 reviewed originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 15 Dec 2005 11:34:03 EST.
Apparently unbowed by recent moves by the music-publishing industry to go after companies that make it easier to find lyrics on the web, Google plans to make music info more readily available via searches. The new feature, set to debut today, will work much like Google's existing system for searching for stock quotes or news from within its core engine, bumping relevant info to the top of a list of search results. Results will include official sites for groups, sites that legally sell music and, yes, sites that offer lyrics and sheet music. So, music publishers, are you ready to take on Google, or are you going to keep on just bullying the little guys (or how about just packing it in and recognizing that there's nothing illegal about helping people find info that's already out there on the net)?

Google adds music search features originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 15 Dec 2005 10:14:44 EST.
If you think Mac vs. Windows battles get nasty, you should check in on the combatants in the KDE vs. Gnome war. What, you assumed that the fact that there are multiple window managers available for Linux was a Good Thing? Adherents of each of the platforms believe they represent the One True GUI, and constantly battle for supremacy. So, when Linux godfather Linus Torvalds weighed in this week with a preference, it created something of a stir. Especially since Torvalds, in no uncertain terms, declared his allegiance to KDE. According to Torvalds, "I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE. This 'users are idiots, and are confused by functionality' mentality of Gnome is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it. I don't use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do. Please, just tell people to use KDE." Will Torvalds sway any of the hardcore fans of either environment? Probably not. But he's opened a good thread on usability, which centers around a key issue: when does simplifying things go too far, and actually take control away from users, rather than providing them with a more effective computing experience? Hmm. Sounds a lot like the Mac vs. Windows arguments. Guess those Linux fans aren't so different after all.

Filed under: OS Updates, Utilities, Linux, Open Source

Linus luvs KDE originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 14 Dec 2005 15:11:14 EST.
It may be too late to rescue pearLyrics from cease-and-desist doom, but the Electronic Frontier Foundation has taken up the cause of the embattled freeware program, and has sent a letter of its own to Warner/Chappell Music. In the letter, EFF attorney Fred von Lohmann warns Warner/Chappell - which accused pearLyrics of copyright theft, despite the fact that the program just acted as a front-end to search publicly accessible lyric web sites -that the company "making any legal threats similar to those leveled against [pearLyrics developer Walter] Ritter against any U.S. software developers who may develop products similar to pearLyrics." Von Lohmann says in his letter that "personal, noncommercial annotation of legitimately acquired digital music files constitutes a noninfringing fair use, there is nothing unlawful about inducing or encouraging music fans to engage in that activity," and warns Warner/Chappell that the company could be in violation of US laws if it goes after other developers of similar software.

Filed under: Audio, Utilities, News, Freeware

EFF stands up for pearLyrics originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 14 Dec 2005 14:59:31 EST.
Overpeer, the P2P spam arm of online music solutions provider Loudeye, is throwing in the towel after three years in business. Overpeer operated by flooding P2P networks with bogus files, some of which contained parts of songs, while others were made up of deafening noises (sounds like some of the music we've downloaded - and liked). The idea was to frustrate file-sharers so much that they'd give up using the services. But in the end, Loudeye determined that it couldn't make money by driving people crazy, and shut down the money-losing subsidiary to focus on its core business of building music stores for clients like Cingular and Amazon.

LoudEye shuts down P2P spam business originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 22:44:28 EST.
I sort of liked the name Konfabulator, but as brands go, it wasn't exactly descriptive (perhaps that's why the slogan of the widget engine was "anything you want it to be"). So, it should come as no real surprise that, just a few months after acquiring the tool, Yahoo has rebranded it as the Yahoo Widget Engine. The rebranding coincides with the release of Version 3.0 of the engine, which includes a handful of new features, along with an updated reference manual for developers. If you haven't tried Konfabulator before, or haven't checked it out in a while, now may be a good time to give it a try. There are a lot of new widgets, and, despite the rebranding, it still supports widgets for non-Yahoo services like Gmail and AIM.

Filed under: Fun, Utilities, Windows, Macintosh, Yahoo!, Freeware

Konfabulator reborn as Yahoo Widget Engine originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 18:01:30 EST. Tired of running back to that room every time you want to change the volume or skip to the next track in your playlist? Sure, you can control it via VNC. But for a more elegant (or at least a more DIY) solution, how about setting up a web server on that iTunes box, and using a few PHP scripts to control iTunes from any browser. Engadget's Eliot Philips walks you through the steps to make this happen. Even if you've never set up a web server before, you can be up and running in no time (Eliot's tutorial is Windows-only, though he does include a link that to another guide that will help you do the same on a Mac).

Filed under: Audio, Windows, Web services, Open Source, How-Tos

How To: control iTunes via a web browser originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 17:23:52 EST.
Brutus, today's free file, does one thing and does it well: It lets you shut down, log off or restart your PC with a single click. Okay, that's three things. Oh, and it also lets you lock your computer. Yeah, four things. But you can still do each of them with just one click. And the program is still free. So go ahead and download it. With one click (once you click here to get to its site, that is).

Brutus: Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 17:14:38 EST.
Gift Guide: MuvAudio - for the anti-DRM music lover

Downloadable software makes a great gift: It doesn't need to be wrapped, you can order it at the last minute, and you can find a program for just about anyone (or at least anyone who owns a computer). With this in mind, we present our holiday gift guide. We'll add a new item every day between now and the end of the year, and you can always click here to catch up on those you've missed.

Today's gift, MuvAudio, is one of a handful of programs that can take any audio playing on your PC and save it to a new file. Most such programs are designed with one goal in mind - disabling the DRM built into some audio files - and MuvAudio is no exception. It can scan your hard drive for audio files, and lets you copy them to new MP3 or WMA files. While some similar programs require you to manually rename new files and hijack your sound card, MuvAudio automatically copies file info including ID3 tags, and can rip up to five files simultaneously with its own virtual sound card. Quite a deal for $18.99. And, for the record, no, I don't think you should use this program to disable DRM and use audio files for nefarious purposes. However, I agree with Walt Mossberg, who says that "consumers should have broad leeway to use legally purchased music and video for personal, noncommercial purposes in any way they want -- as long as they don't engage in mass distribution." If you're paying to get songs from a service like Rhapsody or Napster, and want to use them on an unsupported audio player (i.e., an iPod), this is probably the best way to do it.

Filed under: Audio, Windows, Holiday Gift Guide

Gift Guide: MuvAudio - for the anti-DRM music lover originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 13:56:21 EST.
Microsoft and MTV to launch music service

Bill Gates wants his MTV. Microsoft announced today that it will be teaming up with the music channel to create a new online music service, which will be integrated into an upcoming version of the Windows Media Player. Rather than leverage any equity that the MTV (or even MSN) brand might offer, the new service will also mark the launch of a new brand, undoubtedly created to prove how hip and happening Microsoft and the M really are: Urge. (Hey, at least it beats "the iTunes Music Store.") I'm not sure what this means for Microsoft's deal with Real Networks to promote Real's Rhapsody service, though I suspect that the fact that Microsoft paid Real $300 million as part of that deal might help soften any blow Real might feel from being urged, er, edged aside.

Filed under: Audio, Windows, Web services, Microsoft, Commercial

Microsoft and MTV to launch music service originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 13 Dec 2005 13:12:40 EST.
Looks like pearLyrics creator Walter Ritter may want to count himself lucky that he got off with a cease and desist. The music publishing industry has announced plans to go after copyright infringers in a big way, and they want to jail the operators of web sites that publish song lyrics and sheet music. Authorities should "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective," Music Publishers Association president Lauren Keiser told the BBC. While this is a case of a business having an apparently legitimate complaint - sheet music and lyrics are copyrighted works - the response appears to be typical music-industry overkill. Let's just hope the publishers stick to their plans to go after "very big sites," and doesn't start demanding that teenage kids who run Britney fan sites be dragged off in cuffs. (Then again, maybe a little jail time is what they need to convince them that their taste in music is questionable at best.)

Filed under: Audio, News, Web services

Music publishers want to jail lyric-site operators originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 09 Dec 2005 12:32:26 EST.
After I posted yesterday that a music publisher had shut down the lyric search widget pearLyrics, alert reader Dylan mentioned that a similar program, Evil Lyrics, was still out there. Sure enough, it is. The program does just about the same thing as pearLyrics - that is, it searches web sites that contain song lyrics to display them while you're listening to music. Unlike pearLyrics, which was a Mac/iTunes-only program, Evil Lyrics works with almost any music player, including iTunes, MusicMatch and Windows Media Player. Evil Lyrics is Windows-only, though, so Mac users may have to try hunting down copies of pearLyrics from servers that haven't deleted it yet. In the meantime, Windows users should grab Evil Lyrics before it, too, vanishes.

Evil Lyrics - Today's Free File originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 08 Dec 2005 21:00:27 EST.
