Farewell, Internet

Well, here we are. More than four years after launching, Switched and DownloadSquad are unfortunately being closed. I've been thrilled to work at these two sites that have expanded tech coverage beyond the usual gadgets and social networks to cooking, culture, design, art and more. It's been humbling to work with these incredibly dedicated and talented teams of writers, and it would have been impossible to do it without them.
Going forward, you'll still be able to get the best tech news coverage from Engadget, HuffingtonPost Tech, Joystiq and TUAW. While we're still working out some of the details, Switched and DownloadSquad will continue to live on the Web and be fully accessible via search. Understandably, our Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr presences will quiet down, but you can still follow the Switched and DownloadSquad writers on their personal accounts. Thanks for reading.

Sad to see you go, this was one of my favorite blogs.
Screw you AOL!
DrakkenfyreApr 12th 2011 12:31PM
WHAT? With Engadget being Appled-biased all the time, and Big Download not really covering the same articles (and with sometimes sloppy reporting with errors, and spam-laden comment sections that never get removed) DownloadSquad was mostly neutral, and better than those two for obvious software-related stories.
I only wish your comment sections were more active. It seemed like the only time there were a ton of comments were on a giveaway. You guys deserved more.
Time Wasters were my favorite feature, and I found many enjoyable games. I came into this story thinking it was an editor leaving, like Engadget has had happen. I didn't expect to see the site shut down. I hope this decision comes back to bite them in the ass, with lost revenue from ads and visitor anger. This was done by someone who obviously doesn't know WTF they are doing. I already didn't read Huffington Post because politics and the stupid arguing from both sides aren't my thing. This gives me another reason not to read them, even their tech section.
I am sorry to see you guys go. Take care everyone.

What The Hell.
DLS was one of the oldest and most favourite feeds in Google Reader. Great source of varied tech news that really suited me and made me look a lot smarter than I am :)
Well nothing ever good came from the tainted hand of AOL did it?
I'll follow you guys wherever I can, but terrible news. Thanks for all the hard work and great writing over the years. It's been a blast.

What?? NOOOOO!!!! I come here every day, it's sites like this that keep me "in the know" before everyone else in my company. Engadget is just that - gadgets - I need to know about SERVICES and that's what makes you guys great.
I really, really, REALLY hope you and the other ex-talent as this platform AOL has WRECKED are very, very close to relaunching your own startup blogosphere again. Next time, just say NO to these corporate sponges!! Miss you, see you all soon?!

Kinda crap, but whatever. There's no alternative that is download squad. You will be missed! I really loved this blog. Guess I gotta find a new home.

@Drakkenfyre I agree with what you said but calling Paul and Josh Apple-biased is kinda funny. I never saw them this way myself.
TheoApr 12th 2011 12:38PM
What a sad thing. You have been one of my favorite sites. I've looked at you or a daily basis for months.
I guess I did not click on enough ads.
I better start doing some random clicks on sites I like...
HHUKApr 12th 2011 12:38PM
Awful news. :( This is one of my daily visits for interesting things.
purplerApr 12th 2011 12:41PM
In case whole this thing is serious, i wish you guys good luck and thanks for all effort. I read your stuff every single day in the last few years. Hope you'll come up with something else, Kudos!
joeApr 12th 2011 12:42PM
what a shame :( i didn't know this site was related to AOL at all. you're on my short-list of must-read blogs. all the other tech sites are 90% smartphone coverage. it's so hard to find a good tech blog these days :(
good luck, i hope you all have new positions or jobs available!
HTBApr 12th 2011 12:42PM
Well, this just ruined my day. DLS was my morning coffee web site. I hope you guys all land jobs with Lifehacker/Gizmodo.
mvpApr 12th 2011 12:45PM
WTF?!?!?!?!! Download squad is my favorite blog, seeing as engadget is sleeping with apple...You guys can't do this to me....you can't!!
CartApr 12th 2011 12:46PM
Seconding all these comments. Download Squad is one of the best blogs on the internet and certainly occupies a niche that no other tech blog even comes close to. A large majority of your posts were unique, informative, and featured software and websites that no other blog did. You will be sorely missed. If the writers start a new download squad, please spread the word as I will be a loyal fan.
silversunApr 12th 2011 12:45PM
I hate to see y'all go, no single site can replace the exact material you guys covered. Any thoughts on where I can go for this stuff now?
anujkamraApr 12th 2011 12:48PM
Will miss you DownloadSquad... Not a day goes past when I do not open DS... Sad sad day... :(
richard.gaileyApr 12th 2011 12:50PM
That's really shitty news. I have been following Download squad for a long time and have always liked and enjoyed the articles.
Are any of you thinking of getting together to start your own site for tech news? You have some great writers and it would be a shame to split everyone up.
Thanks for all the articles though in the past and for all your efforts, it's a real shame to see a decent place like this close.
May the interwebs be with you young padawans'.
