New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).
In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

These icons are such a cool play on words, and they look good too.

@Generic Yeah, Aurora's a great name :) Marketing heaven, I guess.

Those About screens make me drool.

@Josh They look way too cool for professional software, eh? :)

I'm really digging the logo idea - you have the dark globe for Nightly, what looks like the rising sun for Aurora, and the full-blown rise of our overlord sun-god, the Firefox after that.

looking forward to new Firefox testing soon ...always fun to see the new features pop up in nightly builds.

Minefield, looks like rather bland compared to the new icons. Hopefully, they'd improve it.
I have to admit those icons almost makes me want to switch back to using Firefox as primary browser. Before I do that I'd still want them to implement their multiprocess architecture and also make a free OS centered around it.

@Jeffrey Step 1: Install Ubuntu Step 2: Update Firefox Step 3: ??? Step 4: Profit!
ChrisSskApr 11th 2011 1:07PM
@Jeffrey Minefield is no more, it becomes Nightly, a new aurora build is added and Beta and stable remain as they are
JeffreyApr 11th 2011 5:18PM
@Garbled Zombie
Ubuntu is not centered around Firefox and also it's made by Canonical.
@ChrisSsk
Oh my bad, I though they were keeping Minefield. I knew there were four channels but since the Beta channel was missing I though it was Minefield.

In the string
app.update.desiredChannel
Do you mean literally "desiredChannel", or are we to replace that with the word "Aurora" or "Nightly"?
Oskar (:icecold)Apr 11th 2011 12:09PM
@Ryzvonusef
Right-click the parameter listing and select New > String from the options. Enter app.update.desiredChannel and give the new parameter the value release, beta or aurora.
Restart your browser and open the Help > About Firefox menu. You will now see the option to update the channel.
Sebastian AnthonyApr 11th 2011 12:11PM
@Ryzvonusef Yep, as Oskar says, literally 'desiredChannel'
But you don't even have to restart the browser...!

Gorgeous icons! I've never been a fan of the Firefox logo, but the Nightly and Aurora icons are yummy. Even the dialogs are nice, too. The About dialog reminds me of Chrome's but only because of the way the browser icon is cut off, but aside from that, Nightly's and Aurora's About dialogs are better looking than Chrome's.

The Aurora logo looks cool, too bad that's the default FF logo. ;)
