Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.
Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.
Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

Awesome! But "ctrl +alt + delete"? Isn't that a Windows XP thing? I assume it won't be like that in the final version.

@Batman CTRL + ALT + DEL has been a part of the logon screen options for Windows going back years, and continues to be available for Windows Vista and 7. It helps keep your password secure by ensuring that you're only giving your credentials to Windows.

@Batman You can turn on the CTRL + ALT + DEL prompt. It's also a default on any domain-connected Windows machine going back to NT.

@Batman I would think Batman would be more computer savvy :)

@Batman Apparently no one in this comment section has ever been on a domain before.....That's the screen everyone in my facility sees every day... (well the Win7 version of it at least)

@rickhamilton620 I see, I guess it is just not enabled on my Win7 machine. Oh, and I just realized that this might be an April Fools joke article, I hope that that is not the case.

@Batman Definitely not a joke. Rivera and Thurott were very clear about that ;)

@ANGELUS It's just that I am way ahead of the curve, my batcave's Win7 machine has an arm scanner instead of ctr alt delete.

Ugly.

Windows Ate. You heard it here first.

Well done indeed. Windows has developed more GUI tools to run up all your memory.
I guess today's user prefers image over performance.
I though control-alt-delete was a Windows Server 2003-08 security measure?
DeoWulfApr 3rd 2011 12:42AM
@Alicia A. I would hardly think that some text and an image would make any significant performance difference. If anything, the minimalism of the Metro UI design language lends itself more toward efficiency. Metro tends towards text instead of images and opaque, solid color instead of transparency.
Honestly, though, if you've got a modern machine I don't see how any of this is problematic.

@Alicia A. if your computer resources are limited, you should use Linux or lower version of windows. With nowadays computer, you won't run out of memory even if all the programs are running at the same time. Why waste?
ElectriumApr 4th 2011 1:28AM
@Alicia A. If you're starving for memory at the log-in screen you probably shouldn't be running Windows 8 anyway...

Cool, why not do that right.

Metro is the biggest Microsoft fail ever. It doesn't even come close to any real creativity....minimalism doesn't mean "do nothing". WP7 will continue to keep a low marketshare for just this reason.
If Microsoft keeps this garbage up, I'm switching to linux.

@mgitch Are you retarded by any chance?

That is one butt ugly screen. Couldn't pick a better character to put on it? OMG, it makes me want to avoid the product just so I never have to see that gay looking space thing.
