Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer
When someone tells me about a "platformer", my first thought is that it's probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]
Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.
Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you've "specialized" your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you'd like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.
The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there's a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.
The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Yet another puzzle-platformer. Why is it that no one seems to be able to put together a platformer/sidescroller that compares favorably to any game made the earlier than 1995! Seriously, we're talking about one of the oldest genres in video games here.
Why does every new platformer today have to a boring, slow, floaty puzzle-solving game with sparse content (levels, enemies powerups etc.) that maybe took 30min. to create?

@Jeffrey
So you actually played this game and found it boring, slow, and floaty?

@Don Extreme
I played it. It was both slow paced and puzzle oriented and yes boring. Anyway, that's really besides the point. Very few ACTION-platformers are being made by anyone and even then still nothing to the amount of content games like CastleVania, Metroid or Earthworm Jim had.

I played through it last night- not unenjoyable (it's been a while since I've seen a game through from start to finish in all honesty)- but certainly not deep (or complicated). There's almost too many solid Flash and download games out there at the moment for things like this to stand out anymore- if you need evidence of this, have a look at how many titles Kongregate has available!

I actually really enjoyed this game. I don't often see platformers with shooting and RPG elements as well. I couldn't figure out how to save, though. I quit and came back, and lost all my progress...
