Google Chrome changes its logo... again! (pictures)

The change occurred yesterday, when the Chrome Dev channel was moved from version 11 to version 12. We're not yet sure whether this is simply a mistake, or an actual reversion to the previous logo. We're seeing the change on both Windows and Mac builds of Chrome, incidentally.
The odd thing is, it was only four days ago that the Google Chrome team published its rationale for the previous logo change. It sounds like they put a lot of effort into the new logo, too! If the logo has actually been reverted, it's possible that the new logo was merely a beta test -- Google may have guaged populist opinion and found that people preferred the orb.
Which logo do you prefer? You can see some before-and-after(-and-before) shots of the Chrome logo after the break.
[thanks to Matthew for the tip!]

The new Chrome logo (before today's reversion)

And now we're back to the orb on the left!

The latest Chromium build still shows the new logo design

And here's the new-old logo on Mac OS X

Maybe it was all just an experimental design.
Hopefully, they realized the only thing that made the original icon make any sense was the chrome in the design. (which the new logo didn't have)

"The odd thing is, Google still hasn't said a thing".
Yep, they did: http://chrome.blogspot.com/2011/03/fresh-take-on-icon.html

@s Oooh. I don't know how we missed that.
Thanks. Will update the post.

I like both and I like the ideas behind each, but If I had to pick one I would pick the new one, just because it's so much simpler and I think that's the best idea to stand behind when you're talking about today's browsers. Not everyone wants simple in a browser, but I do. Of course, the other is shiny and looks like it's made of Chrome so that's pretty cool as well. If they could make a simple icon (vs. 3D looking) with that Chrome, shiny metal looking effect, that would be a perfect meshing of the 2 ideas but I'm no graphics artist so that would probably either be too difficult or just plain ugly.

I like the old new one!

I like the new flat icon. The latest dev build reverts back to the 3D shiny version, but I suspect it's a glitch.

Probably just a bug. I'm still getting the flat logo in my taskbar. I prefer it, so hopefully that's the case.

Didn't Google just copy Chromium's new logo? Who came up w/ it first? Google or Chromium?
benzo3000Mar 26th 2011 11:36AM
@Noah Chromium is the open-source version of chrome. Both are maintained by Google.

The new one is better. The old one looked like the Simon kids game for 3 players instead of 4.

Sill looks like a psychedelic three-legged swastika to me.

Though its most likely a mistake, I much prefer the old metal looking orb. The new one doesnt work well on Windows 7. The white circle around the blue part of the logo looks like an octagon, due to the taskbar icon size. Its like they didn't test it well on Windows or something. Also the 'glow' around the icon on hover is now red instead of the old yellow. It looks really weird.

Love the old, old one ie version 10. Version 11 is so boring.

Definitely prefer the previous logo. It always makes me think of GLaDOS for some reason.

the previous icon has one thing going for it in that the shading on the green side from the 3d button effect does not visually erode into the blue taskbar (blue and green muddle alot) of the antique operating system xp with the royale theme (with any luck i'll get a new box later this year.) in another sense, this is just a vote on the era of the 3d button icons, which i always thought looked plastic and gimmicky even if i've grown accustomed. on any modern operating system i'm sure the new icon looks better. yay for the next icon style trend! sorry...

I use the Chrome stable channel, so the matte icon hasn't trickled down to me yet. The Internet is inherently resistant to change, but at least this time I suppose I can see how people could dislike the redesign. Personally, judging from the full size up there, I like it a lot better, but if they decided to change it back, that's fine too.
Ultimately, I'm going to use or not use a program based on the program, not on how the program represents itself in my taskbar. Chrome is my choice for a "secondary" browser, for when I need to quickly check my other GMail account, or for when I had to watch Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video but didn't want YouTube tracking that in my history and recommending me similar things. I'll enjoy the new icon for the 2 days it takes version 11 to cycle through, then life will go on.

Aren't we jumping the gun just a little bit? This is still in the dev channel. If it stays the same when it hits beta, then I might be a little more interested. In all honesty, I don't think it's that big of a deal. The browser still works fine and that is good enough for me.

they also removed the "drag on the tabs area and search/go" feature, that is wrong with google
