Install iMovie on the original iPad without jailbreaking

To get iMovie onto the original iPad you're going to need the iPhone configuration utility, which is available for Mac OS X and Windows. Once that's installed, fire up the program and follow this step-by-step guide
- Click on 'Applications' in the left hand menu under 'LIBRARY'
- Click the 'Add' application button in the top left hand corner
- Find the updated iMovie IPA file (the one downloaded or updated from iTunes), which should be located in your 'Mobile Applications' folder within your 'iTunes' folder (normally located in your 'Home' directory).
- Select your iPad from 'DEVICES'
- Select the 'Applications' tab
- Scroll down to 'iMovie'
- Hit the 'Install' button (as shown in the image above).

I tried this and it worked, but when I sync my iPad in iTunes now it wants to remove iMovie. It says I need to authorize my computer, but when I do the same error just pops up again. It looks like you need to reinstall iMovie using the iPhone Configuration Utility after you sync with iTunes each time.

@Jason Clarke yeah, same here. Seems they really don't want you to run it on an original iPad. Strange then that you can actually install it with the Config tool. If the iPhone 4 can run it fine, then why not the iPad 1? I guess 256 MB RAM might not be enough.

Installed the "iTunes Configuration Utility", clicked on "Applications" and then "Add". Get a "Browse for folder (Select an application to add to the library)" window. Drill down to where the "iMovie120.ipa" file is. click on the "Mobile Applications" folder and OK ... Don't get a list of applications to add. Instead get an error message "The folder ****** is not a valid mobile application".
What am I doing wrong? Help!
TIA

@RonC You've selected and added only iMovie into the Config tool via the file browser, not tried to add the entire 'Mobile Applications' folder correct?

@Samuel Gibbs
trying to send reply again.
Like I said in my original post, when I click on the Add button, I get a "Browse for Folder" window. Not a "Search for Application" folder. So try drilling down to where the iMovie ipa file is. Get to the Mobile Applications folder, select it but do NOT get a list of applications (ipa file) to select.
Do I need to do any configuration steps (iPhone configuration utility) before I do anything?
Samuel GibbsMar 14th 2011 11:40AM
@RonC The add button is context sensitive, which is why you have to click the Applications selection within the side menu under devices before you click add. Perhaps you've had something else selected when you pressed add, other than that I can't explain it. Sorry.

@RonC
Had the same issue. Sort of got around it by:
1) Putting a copy of iMovie on the desktop
2) Clicking add while in the "application" part of Config Utility...got the same browse to folder dialog
3) Drag & Drop the iMovie app onto the "OK" button of the dialog box from Config Utility
4) iMovie now shows up in the application window of the utility.
Here's where I ran into a problem...switching to the iPad section the iMovie install button now shows up...click install...wait a couple of seconds...up comes an error message: KAMD message receive error. Havent' figured out how to fix that yet but at least have iMovie in config utility. Maybe it won't error out on you. :)

Does this instal the iPad version or the iPhone version because I can only get the iPhone version. Then again maybe that's because I'm in the UK and iPad 2 is not yet out?

Having trouble replying to a reply. So let's try as a fresh comment ...
Thanks (Jeff Phillips)
Tried it and got as far as you did. Got iMovie into the application list and tried to install it. Got the same error message. Maybe it was not meant to be. Another person mentioned that even if you can get it installed, get error messages whenever try to sync. It wants to remove iMovie and need to authorize computer, etc.
I'm going to give up. It's only a $4.99 app I have sitting around unused. I'll wait till I get an iPad 2 or iPad 3. I just got my iPad a couple of months ago, so I'll probably wait a couple of years for iPad 3.

Hmm, couldn't work for my iPad :(
Well, to the iPad 2, the iMovie and Garageband are great upgrade, but I don't want to buy the iPad 2 just for iMovie, I think I would like to stick with the 1gen iPad and wait for iPad 3 ;)
Hmm hope someone can fix the bugs...
