Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.
You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.
Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.
How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

It's still buggy. If you remove a completed game and restart the app the delete games will show up as active.

Super buggy still, still no push notifications, notifications still don't show up...

Still incredibly buggy. Force closes all the time.

Still sucks massively.

Words With Friends on Android is baaaaaad. Not only is it slow, buggy, crashes all the time, and has a VERY limited database of words, but the board is ugly too.
Right now I'm stuck to where whenever I launch the app, a full-app ad tries to load. Of course ad-free has prevented that ad from loading, so the ad screen never goes away. I have to quickly launch the app, and start tapping like a mad man on where the current game is that I'm playing in order for it to switch to the game screen.
What a piece of crap!
Go download/buy WordFeud, and uninstall this lousy garbage.

Notifications only come up when I have played my go
however, I have it on my Tab and the new update now allows it to work, you can see the letters now and can select them all, something that couldn't be done before.
Same on the Desire as before the update, plays fine, notifications only come up when you have played your move
I have also installed it on the wifes x10 mini pro (not in the market for that phone) and it works just as well (everything works except for notifications)

Same behaviour for me- glitchy, random notification success rate, laggy interface when placing letters, and intermittent lock ups/failure to load ads. It's a real shame :-(

Absolutely Horrendous! How many points is that?

I have now been running the update for 3 days on my Droid 1. Unfortunately, the experience has only gotten worse...
Prior to the update my problem was:
1. Each time I would reload the game from the background it would immediately Force Close. Opening again would then work until the next time the app was backgrounded (at which time repeat the process). I tried running it off of Internal App Storage as well as SD, but it had no impact.
Since the update, things have only gotten worse:
1. Same as above, still occurs 100% of the time when loading from background.
2. About 25% of the time that I open the App (several times a day) it says it has identified an error, fixed it, and will now close. The next time I open the app I have to re-register (enter my email address) and let it (slowly) log back in.
3. Sometimes the app randomly closes with no message...just gone.
Amazing, I have not had any games lost, ever (even before the update). It is simply that I can't ever open the application on my first try!

Crashes epic 4g frequently, requiring reboot.

Since the update, I have had no crashes, but the button to submit is COMPLETELY gone. I can't play a game anymore. I even un-installed, and re-installed (I'm on a droid 2) and I its still not there.
