From Windows 1 to Windows 7, and everything in between, in just 10 minutes (video)
If you've ever wanted to see, in 10 short minutes, the evolution of simple, glorious MS-DOS Shell and Windows 1, to the lofty, shiny, 3D peaks of Windows 7, with every version (except Windows Me) in between, now's your chance.
With the title 'Chain of Fools,' the video (embedded after the break) chronicles one man's attempt to upgrade Windows from one version to the next, from Windows 1 to Windows 7. The idea is to see how well Windows deals with the upgrade process -- whether settings and UI preferences are preserved -- and to see how well later versions of Windows deal with very old games (Doom 2 and The Secret of Monkey Island).
The complete upgrade process, if you're interested, is as follows:
MS-DOS 5 > Windows 1 > Windows 2 > Windows 3 > Windows 3.1 > Windows 95 > Windows 98 > Windows 98 SE > Windows 2000 (NT!!) > Windows XP SP2 > Windows Vista > Windows 7. Windows Me, may it forever burn in hell, isn't included as its upgrade is mutually exclusive with Windows 2000.
Even if you're not a fan of Windows, it's worth watching just to see footage of Windows 1 and 2, which are both quite rare. The results of the upgrade processes surprised us, too -- it's fantastic to see how many legacy applications from Windows 3 survived to Windows 7, and remained operational!

Nice find. Very interesting to watch.
Ah the good old dos days. He had better luck running dos games in XP than I had. Thank goodness there's dosbox.

The lack of Mistake Edition (ME) is disappointing, but chances are he would've broken the entire setup in the process
mkoMar 10th 2011 3:37PM
@sherl0k once you chose nt path by upgrading 98 to 2000 you can't go back dos-based Me
DavidMar 3rd 2011 8:42AM
Forgot Windows ME..... how could anyone forgot that horrible upgrade

It's a typical Microsoft-like marketing artificial animation stating something that is real only by 50%. The other 50% are mixed facts and artificial animation. I'm with Windows since early 90s and I know what the hell is it to upgrade it. Especially installing numerous service packs - why didn't author mentioned the hell of Microsoft service pack?
It's ridiculous how Microsoft can create this Chain of fools (the video's name is perfect!) since 1985.

I'm still trying to force myself into believing that XP, Vista, and 7 didn't come out. I have an 2010 computer with Windows 2000 installed.
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2011 8:05AM
@Mpmcfarlane I admit, Windows 2000 is exceptionally good -- but Windows 7 is as good, or better. You can even make it look like Windows 2000 if you're THAT fond of it :P
(I still run Windows 2000 on an old computer -- a K6-2 500 that's overclocked to 550MHz!)

Where's Bob?

@mlittle Burning in hell, with Me.

heh I have actually installed Windows 1 on to a live machine :-D
The rationale at the time was that it didn't have enough memory to run Win3.11...
...pause for thought
...so we went back through time looking for one that would load :D
It was a shock that we managed to get it to run tbh.
Oh a bigger shock was that it was usable LOL

JC just watched the video - that takes you back :-)
Started with a second hand 286 and DOS 4?
Happy days heh.
Oh and I never upgraded, if at all possible, clean installs was the rule :-)
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2011 8:01AM
@SilverWave I've done a couple of upgrades over the years and regretted every one of them :)
I always end up doing a clean install a few months later, once the system becomes almost unusable.
