Gmail glitch deletes years of email, attachments and chat logs
Over the weekend, a few hundred-thousand Gmail users logged into their email accounts to find that they had been reset, treating them as brand new users and most importantly, missing years worth of email, attachments, and chat logs.Google initially reported that about 0.29% of users were affected, pegging the number accounts around the 500,000 mark. Big G later revised that number to 0.08%, or around 150,000 users, some of which have had their service restored already.
Google expects to have both accounts and emails restored for all users in the near future, but for those unaffected this time perhaps it's time to set about backing up your Gmail account?

I'm definitely interested in backing up now but that gmail backup site is dead. I previously backed up with Thunderbird pulling down the mail. And that would appear to be the best low cost option.

Orgarnizations the use Gmail and Outlook should take a look at EdgeSafe PST2PST Backup (http://www.datamills.com) that is able to backup the PST file automatically onto the organization's network.

Realistically, what are the chances of ever losing your Gmail e-mails?
I mean that Google probably have server farms backing up server farms infinitum and so that actual chance that they wouldn't be able to restore what is lost would be non existent in my opinion.
You've a far greater chance of losing the backup you make locally than losing all through Gmail itself.

@Prozac69 true, but you can never have too many backups :)

@Prozac69 Can you really afford to take that chance though? And doesn't exactly help those who took that approach and then DID lose their gmail data in previous years.
Also while Google are rooting through the data trying to restore your mailbox you don't have access to important information. I'd rather have a local backup to rely on in extremis.
