Ask DLS: How did your Windows 7 SP1 upgrade go?

It wasn't all unicorns and double rainbows here in the Download Squad bunker. One laptop refused to progress beyond 66% complete, even after several retries and reboots. Another workstation was left running the update all weekend, and just hit 98% when we returned to work on Tuesday -- only to fail at 99% and start rolling back the operation.
So tell us, DS readers, how was your experience installing the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 update? Hit the poll after the break!

No problem at all on Win 7 64-bit Home Premium.
Was only a ~80Mb download since I had all previous patches already but still it took a while to download probably since Microsofts servers were being hammered last night.

Failed 4 times before a restart solved the issue. The error before reboot was 8020053.

Went fine for me. Upgraded my desktop with W7Pro and my netbook with W7Starter. Both took a bit but ran just fine.

Worked great for me, no issues so far. Install was quick and easy and download was only 61 Mb.

On my VirtualBox Windows 7 x64 Ultimate image, the install kept failing after 26%.
I had to download this from MS:
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821)
Installed that, rebooted and then installed SP1 again with no issues.

Smooth, no issues on my notebook, my mom's notebook and my PC.
Was only an ~80MB download apparently, since all the computers are set to update automatically.

It failed twice on my desktop. It downloaded completely, then failed to install. I have not tried it on my laptop yet.

startup became incredibly slow, and my cpu and ram were maxing out. i rebooted several times but the problems persisted. i had to do a system restore.

Easy as pie on Windows Home Premium 32-bit, thou downloading failed like 4 times before reaching the crossline.

Yea I had several updates along with SP1 to install. So i did them first, rebooted and then did SP1 and everything was fine.. This was on two PCs..

I'm trying to free up room so that it might actually download. I had over 10gig free last month, what the hell happened?
richard.gaileyFeb 23rd 2011 4:36PM
Mine seemed to go fine, albeit a little slow to shut down and boot-up due to the updates being applied. About 5mins on start up and 5 on shutdown. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with Intel Core 2 Q6600.
I'd be interested to know why certain people seem OK and some not so well? I take it most of you are running 64bit OS's, but what processors are you using?

Same times approximately. Have a T6670 on my thinkpad.

Because many people refuse to do automatic updates and forget to run a manual Windows Update once a week.
Then SP1 comes and they get all excited and try to run it without doing some of the necessary pre-updates first.
Even though W7 SP1 is a rollup of updates itself, it DOES have a requirement of needed certain important updates before it (which would have been installed automatically otherwise), so to people having issues - they may want to try the Windows 7 SP1 readiness tool.

I can't install. i get error 80073701
I already tried to reset window update...nothing
Byron YuFeb 23rd 2011 11:32PM
@Scott
I also was getting the same error. I ended up doing an in-place upgrade, then SP1 installed fine.

I've only done the update on one computer so far, and it was through Windows Update. Allowed it to run through all the steps and reboots and it went fine, no issues. I want to get the offline version downloaded though, so I'll see how that goes later.

I didn't bother updating to SP1, because I had the feeling that Microsoft would sneak in the anti-piracy update to SP1.
I checked the list for SP1, and surely enough Microsoft did sneak in the anti-piracy update into SP1.
That's why I'm avoiding SP1 at all costs.

@Christian Velasquez
I've pirated Windows 7 and I'm fine, Installed SP1 and nothing got flagged. My copy still runs fine.
