Nokia gets Windows Phone 7, Bing, Xbox Live and Office in partnership with Microsoft
It's finally happened, Nokia's just announced that it'll be partnering Microsoft in a 'Broad Strategic Partnership' to not only take on Windows Phone 7 for future smartphones, but trade existing software technologies. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, a former Microsoft executive himself, announced that he has managed to push through a union that'll see not only Windows Phone 7 taking primary duty on Nokia's smartphones going forward, but integration of Bing services for search, maps, and ads, plus Xbox Live and Office. Nokia Maps will also be integrated into Microsoft's mapping services, while the Nokia content store will be absorbed into Microsoft Marketplace.
Is this the right move for Nokia? They make decent hardware for the most part, but in recent years their operating system of choice, Symbian, has failed to keep up with the rapid evolution of other modern smartphone platforms. It just goes to show, that more and more, it's the software that can make or break modern gadgets. Whether Windows Phone 7 will make or break Nokia, we'll have to wait to find out.

Is Nokia dead in the water, my view is it missed the lifeboat and is holding on to a lead weight.

@Depicus I really don't know on this one. I'm with you in thinking this might be too little too late, but Nokia has such a giant brand, presence and market-share of non-smartphones, that they might have the legs to catch up to the rest. Maybe.

@Depicus The Nokia product is stuck in the mud, but not dead by any stretch because the front runners in this business have a nasty habit of tripping over their own hype. Microsoft was just what the doctor ordered. The running on the hills of the leaders position will keep those guys honest and that is something we consumers sorely need these days. #INMLHCo12

Heh what a desperate move.
Goodbye Nokia it has been decades since I bought a phone from you so you wont be missed.
I give you 3 years.

@SilverWave I noticed how you seem to post your doom and gloom view of Nokia in every single article about it. Bitter much?

No just surprised that they fell this suicide pack.
They are allowing *MS* to control their destiny.
That never ends well for any MS partner
Nokia were in a bad position but this makes things worse!
What were they thinking giving an ex-ms exec the keys to the kingdom?

They were thinking... If I am going to drown, I could do better to do so out in the mainstream instead of the little puddle called Europe. This is a Microsoft effort to back into Europe from the East. Nokia sells a lot of product there and across Asia Major. Microsoft has been beaten blue by the Opensource monster in those areas from the West of China to the Maginot Line and the Arctic tundras to North Africa. Its a good offensive move by both to pull a off sprint to try to catch up in the middle of the race up hill. It appears that the leaders are on steeper grade so its now or never for the laggards.
