Firefox 4 gets Windows 7 taskbar auto-pinning

Strong finds it odd that Windows 7 doesn't do this automatically. After all, Microsoft does pin Internet Explorer to the taskbar -- except, of course, on Windows 7 N builds where IE isn't included. He's not happy about having to implement the change in Firefox, either. He posts, "It kind of pisses me off that it was considered important enough to have a browser front and center pinned to the task bar on Win7 but it wasn't considered important enough to do this for the browser that the users of Win7 have explicitly chosen to use."

Very easy to explain that one, it's like the crap companies install on their "clean" installs. It's just there when you start it up.
If this guy would take a minute to think about it, IE doesn't magically bind to the task bar if you re-enable all the defaults. Nor does Win7 have default programs, simply default file handling. Considering i have a dozen programs (or more) handling several hundred file types, I would like to chose which programs I pin to the menu, thank you very much.

I believe the developer was referring to the fact in xp, the pinned browser in the start menu changes depending on the default browser. In Windows 7 it doesn’t. Its kind of sneaky cos' you just know Microsoft had a meeting at some point and decided to change the behaviour so it should just be a normal pinned IE shortcut that way if the user switches browsers it'll always be there a mis-click away. This is especially useful when you’re trying to keep the average layman from switching to that new browser their tech savvy nephew installed. You know the type of people who call Firefox google because its the default home page.

I agree, it seems since the court ruled against internet explorer, all companies use it to whine. I mean seriously you couldn't pick a more random thing to whine about?

@dmitr77 I agree! Why can't they whine about people whining about THEIR whining about the IE thing?
:)

@Lee Mathews I had a bad feeling this might happen :(

Er, Windows 7 doesn't pin *any* software upon installation by default in the first place. When you do a fresh installation there's a few icons there, including IE, but as a fresh installation on all versions of Windows 7 save the EU one don't include other browsers, how is anyone supposed to download Firefox (or anything else) to start out?
I would frankly be annoyed to find a developer choosing to pin icons to my taskbar under any circumstances -- it's irritating enough when they create desktop icons on their own or icons in the Quick Launch bar -- and I hope this new addition is a checkbox left to the end user instead of some "assumed" benefit because he has a bone to pick with Microsoft.

@Harsh Thats not true. I have Firefox 3.6 as my default browser and it shows up at the top of my start menu. Right where IE used to be. It doesn't automatically pin itself to the task bar however. I don't really mind that though. The last thing I want is stuff automatically taking up room down there without my approval. Pinning a program to the taskbar is so incredible quick and easy I'm not really entirely sure what he his complaining about. I'm thinking he is complaining just for the sake of complaining...
