Webmail: older people using it more, teens tossing it aside

Taking a look at comScore's comparison of 2009 vs. 2010 webmail use, a couple things are pretty clear. Older users are finally starting to see how Web-based email is useful and getting into the swing of things. That, in turn, seems to be causing teenagers to turn up their noses and flee services like Gmail and Hotmail in droves.
OK, maybe it's not the increase in older users causing teens to leave -- it's more probable that young users are more likely to use other methods to communicate like Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging.
A while back, Mark Zuckerberg claimed that email was dead, and he certainly seems to be right on the money in terms of people under the age of 18.

That's about right.
On a different train of thought regarding old versus young, last week I asked a group of 20 somethings who John, Paul, George and Ringo were. I got a room full of blank stares.

Kids under the age of 18 hardly ever find themselves in situations where they need to formally communicate, so they don't use email. All they want to do is talk with friends, so of course they are just going to hang out on Facebook or send texts.
So is email "dead?" Or was it never alive to begin with for that demographic?

@Android underling:
You're right. I barely used email through high school (mostly just to email my parents and my grandma who wasn't on facebook). I still mainly use facebook now in college maybe sometimes emailing professors.
But having just gotten a work internship, I'm barely using facebook at work, it's mostly outlook.

Not surprising. These days I pretty much only use my email address to sign up for site accounts and things. As far as not IRL personal communication goes, I stick to Facebook and texting. I'm only 19, so maybe as I grow up I'll begin to find more situations in which email makes sense for personal or professional communication, but right now I can say 99% of the emails I receive are automated, and I only send a few emails a year.

I guess that makes me ancient, since I hate webmail and prefer a real desktop email client like Thunderbird, Zimbra, Mail, or even Outlook.
With MobileMe (with Apple Mail and Outlook) and Hotmail (with Windows Live Mail and Outlook) you don't have to choose, though. You can use a proper desktop client when you can, and webmail when you must.

In an office I work with the employees are so clueless I had to set them up with GAPPS just because they can figure out how to use gmail but thunderbird scares the shit out of them.
