BBC iPlayer app for iPad and Android out this week in the UK
BBC iPlayer applications for the iPad and Android will be out later this week in the UK. On the iOS side, the app will at first be iPad-only, so tough luck for those owning an iPhone or an iPod touch. Also, not all Android devices will be supported -- because of the hardware requirements for Flash-powered video streams (interesting how they have managed to get around that for the iPad). As such, only devices running Android 2.2+ and having Adobe Flash Player 10.1+ installed will be supported.
The apps will be focused on "getting the basics right," according to the BBC Internet Blog. More features will be built in throughout the year. For now, the apps will allow you to watch live TV and listen to radio. You will also be able to access the BBC's entire catalog of catch-up programmes, and you'll be able to stream seven days' TV and radio on demand, as well as take advantage of series stacking, just like in the Web iPlayer. The apps have a simple and intuitive design, high picture quality, and support personalized favorites.
It seems that streaming will only be possible over a Wi-Fi connection, while browsing through the app will also work on 3G. And according to Engadget, the new app will make it to the US in June.

There already is a BBC player for Android. It's called beeb player. It does stream over 3g and does not require android 2.2 or flash and it's free. It ha brought me endless enjoyment - live radio is particularly useful. A better use of the license fee would be for the BBC to buy the app from the budding developer (not connected to me in any way) rather then spending a fortune duplicating something that is already there.
