Google made a minor tweak to the Gmail navigation links recently -- moving Photos into a more prominent spot and Reader into the More drop-down. While I wasn't particularly concerned (I've got Firefox hotkeys wired to most of my bookmarks for fast mouse-free access), the change created quite a stir on Twitter.
But as is usually the case, enthusiasts who don't want to accept changes on their favorite Web sites have already responded. If you want your Reader link back and you're using Google Chrome, grab the
Put Reader Back extension. Once installed, just reload your Gmail tab to see the change.

You are my hero for providing this.

A little shameless self promotion--I wrote an extension as well in my frustration yesterday. Does the same thing, and adds it to all services (Maps, Docs, etc.), just a nice quick and dirty fix. So as an alternate, here's the "Back to the Reader!" extension:

Damn. I read this DLS post, switched back to my Gmail tab and refreshed, and-- poof!-- my Reader link vanished.
I'm more concerned about what this says about the state of Reader. It's been a long time since it has seen any changes or improvements. Removing its link from the main set comes across like a demotion of sorts. I was hoping with the influx of Bloglines users (I know it was eventually rescued) Google would divert more attention to Reader.

I love my Reader and when it disappeared from that first line I thought, like Matt, that 'they' are probably getting ready to scrap it (like the late notebook, which I also used a lot). All I can say is I HOPE not. Thanks for the fix.

Reader is back in the main bar! How 'bout that. :-)
