If you've been keeping up with the
VLC for iOS saga, the cross platform media player saw its brief stint in the App Store come to an end yesterday. While VLC's outspoken frontman Remi Denis-Courmant seemed pretty convinced that this would happen as far back as
October 2010, some on the VLC mailing lists figured that distribution via Cydia
would be an option -- since it would allow for a fully GPL-compliant release.
Developer Ryan Petrich
announced on Twitter that he was doing what he could to help ensure users had access to VLC for iOS -- by making it available via Cydia. If you've got a jailbroken iOS device, you just need to add his beta repository (
) to your sources and you're good to go.

Here's a win for ideology and a loss for users.

I don't get one thing. VLC is a multi-format player, right? But how do you put video files that cannot be played with the built-in player on the device? It doesn't have a public file system that applications can access...
JamesJan 9th 2011 10:46AM
@Iliyan Actually, there are plenty of ways to do it. Dropbox being one.

@Iliyan : Click on your device in iTunes (assuming, if you're on Windows, that said PoS pseudo-virus decides to actually work for a change). Go to the 'Apps' tab. Scroll to the bottom. There you'll see a list of apps that can have files transferred specifically to or from them. Just drag and drop whatever you want VLC to be able to see.
It's an idiotic and thoroughly unintuitive system, but that's life in the walled asylum.
There may be a better way if you're jailbroke, dunno.

Ugh, keep on getting an 500 internal server error. Will keep the App Store version of VLC until his server's recovered from the weight of the massive downloads.
