Amazon has announced that it will release a Kindle app for Android and Windows-based tablets later this year. The app would be great on Samsung's Android-powered Galaxy Tab, but it's actually designed to be ready for devices that haven't even been released yet, like the HTC tablet rumored to launch in February
. "We're very excited to support the upcoming Android and Windows LCD tablet computers with free Kindle apps that we'll tailor for the particular devices," said Dorothy Nichols, Amazon's Kindle director, in a press release
Like previous Kindle
apps -- including the existing Android app for phones -- the tablet version will be free. It will also give you access to all your previously purchased books through Amazon's "buy once, read anywhere" Whispernet system.
